Study: Texas Restrictions Led Up To 240,000 Women To Self-Induce Abortions

Posted by | November 17, 2015 18:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Restrictive measures by Texas Republicans have led hundreds of thousands of women to self-abort according to the Texas Policy Evaluation Project.

The study, which was based at the University of Texas at Austin, found that between 100,000 and 240,000 women had performed self-induced abortions in Texas over the past five years, the Austin Chronicle reported.

According to the study, the “advent of onerous legislation imposing restrictions on legal abortion access” and the availability of abortion drugs — largely from Mexico — have combined to make self-induced abortions in Texas less rare than most U.S. states.

“Other methods reported by those who knew someone who had attempted self-induction included herbs or homeopathic remedies, getting hit or punched in the abdomen, using alcohol or illicit drugs, or taking hormonal pills,” the study said.

“Several restrictive abortion laws have been imposed in Texas in the past decade, and three provisions of HB2, one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, went into effect in 2013,” researchers noted.

Between 100,000 and 240,000? Sounds like solid scientific research going on there.

I can’t link to the actual study but they’re summarizing the statistical range around a mean. I can reasonably assume they have established a statistical potential population of abortion recipients and based on the number of responses they got to their questions they’re projecting that result and reporting the possible range of outcomes. To simplify it for you, AT LEAST 100,000 women have self-induced and possibly as many as 240,000. The mean is probably around 170,000. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t make it invalid.

Thanks. I made my reply to RER before I looked at your post. My closing comment to RER still applies however.

And if that fails, the citizens of Texas are left with the medical bills and the possibility of a family without a mother.

Please don’t comment on scientific research if you have zero understanding of science, and of statistics.

Conservatives won’t be happy until women and girls are dying horrible deaths in the back alleys of our cities.

nothing like 12th century laws in a 21st century governance.

helps the mind to conceive many new and unexpected way of dealing with health issues of an individual that some arrogant piss ass church whores deem the right to force them to live their life the way THEY want them to live it!

  6. mistlesuede November 17th, 2015 at 22:43

Wait until the SCOTUS gets done with the latest case heading there. It was taken up specifically because the states are putting an undue burden on women looking for health care services.

    • rg9rts November 18th, 2015 at 12:04

Wanna bet how Scalia votes ??

      • mistlesuede November 18th, 2015 at 12:21

Nah. I think we both know. He, Thomas and Alito are arrogant SOB’s and are definitely not on the side of women’s rights. I don’t know what to expect from Roberts. And then there is the Catholic factor with Sotomayor along with the other five who are Catholic. Will they follow the law, or the laws of their religion? I just don’t have much confidence.

        • rg9rts November 18th, 2015 at 12:23

          Remember JFK

          • mistlesuede November 18th, 2015 at 14:49

            I don’t understand your point.

            • rg9rts November 18th, 2015 at 16:12

he was catholic and the BIG question was would he follow what the vatican told him to do. Very real issue in 1960

              • mistlesuede November 18th, 2015 at 21:18

Yes, of course. I remember reading about that. All the more reason to think that I should not need to be concerned about the SCOTUS all these decades later, but I am.

They need to bring back the ‘Do it Yourself” kit that was available some years back (80’s?).

  8. Warman1138 November 18th, 2015 at 01:43

Congratulations to the time warp idiots in the Texas legislature, you have succeeded in driving women’s health care back to the stone age. Are you happy now or is there something else you’d like to screw up next.

This is like saying prohibitions on hiring hit men lead to more people committing murder themselves.
