Bernie: Take Marijuana Off Dangerous Drug List

Posted by | October 28, 2015 22:00 | Filed under: Good News Politics

Bernie Sanders wants marijuana to no longer be classified as a dangerous drug.

Doing so would be a big deal for marijuana policy in this country. While it wouldn’t legalize marijuana at the federal level per se, it would allow states to pursue their own marijuana policies free of most federal interference. The DEA classifies marijuana as a schedule 1 drug because it says that the drug has no medically accepted use and high a potential for abuse. It’s regulated more tightly than other drugs that are far more deadly and less medically useful, like cocaine, opium and methamphetamines.

“The time is long overdue for us to take marijuana off the federal government’s list of outlawed drugs,” he said in prepared remarks given to the Post by his campaign. “In my view, states should have the right to regulate marijuana the same way that state and local laws now govern sales of alcohol and tobacco.”

For sure. Cannabis has been investigated since 1894 (no typo) and has yet to be found anywhere near as dangerous as alcohol,. and less habit forming as tobacco. It was made illegal, at least in part, to give ATF agents something to do when prohibition was repealed.

Well, really, it was made illegal so Hearst and DuPont could make profits without hemp destroying their logging and petrochemical businesses.

It is also of note that the cannabis plant was a strategic commodity during WWII. It was used for rope. Not sure how that worked out for law enforcement, though during that period of history law enforcement was hit and miss and highly political.

Hell, hemp was a major part of our country up until the female plant got demonized!

    Long passed due.
It’s nice to see a candidate who isn’t afraid to speak the truth.

There is absolutely proven medical benefits… even if it’s just for treating nausea, encouraging an appetite, and pain management.
And there is almost no high potential for abuse, as can be seen in thousands of personal use cases.

At the very least, it needs to be removed from Schedule 1… and never should have been there to begin with.
