WASHINGTON — America’s love affair with savory, cured meats hit a rough patch Monday when a World Health Organization panel declared that processed meats — like ham, hot dogs, bacon and corned beef — cause cancer in humans. The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer also determined that red meat, like beef, pork and lamb,…

Processed vegetarian food has it’s own risk… human DNA in vegetarian hot dogs.
I’ve been a vegetarian for decades and do not eat any of the processed crap put out by the food industry.

For those who don’t know, it doesn’t so much say that red meat and bacon cause cancer in great rates. Rather, it says that there is very strong evidence that there is a net increase in cancer due to red meat and bacon. The categories are about the amount of evidence, not the amount of effect.

Think of it this way – bowel cancer has a very low incidence rate. Evidence indicates that these things increase the rates of bowel cancer significantly. But a significant increase, even 500%, still leaves you with a very low incidence rate. It’s not that these things will give you cancer. It’s that they’ll increase, marginally, your risk of getting cancer.

They overstate their case by comparing red meat to smoking. As one doctor put it yesterday, the normal risk of colon cancer is about 5%, and eating one hot dog a day raises the risk to 6%. The risk of a non-smoker getting lung cancer is about 1.3%. Smoking raises the risk to about 16%.

Moderation in everything. Perhaps its what the meat industry is injecting or feeding the animals with or what they are adding to the processed meat that is causing the cancer ?…Hands off my chicken wings !

I’ll fight anyone who tries to take my bacon away. The occasional hamburger or steak is not likely to kill anyone. However the poor are often relegated to cheap, over processed meats that are high in fat, salt and who knows what else.

We go through a lot of Turkey Bacon- the brand we use says it has no nitrates, also we cook it in a microwave. I assume this is not quite the same as the real stuff fried at high heat in a skillet? Anyone out there who knows?

i’ve heard that Turkey Bacon is even more unhealthy than regular bacon.

Admittedly, I’m not a nutritionist, nor do I play one on TV…

Makes sense to me- it’s probably more processed than real bacon to make it seem more like the real thing.
