Pentagon: U.S. To Begin ‘Direct Action On The Ground’ In Syria And Iraq

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter says the U.S. will take “direct action on the ground” in Iraq and Syria.

“We won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL, or conducting such missions directly whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground,” Carter said in testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee, using an alternative name for the militant group.

Carter pointed to last week’s rescue operation with Kurdish forces in northern Iraq to free hostages held by ISIS.

Carter and Pentagon officials initially refused to characterize the rescue operation as U.S. boots on the ground. However, Carter said last week that the military expects “more raids of this kind” and that the rescue mission “represents a continuation of our advise and assist mission.”

This may mean some American soldiers “will be in harm’s way, no question about it,” Carter said last week.

Sorry for the accidental down-vote. Sloppy mousemanship. I wanted to say, yes, repeat your comment ten times over, in caps. This really sucks. There’s never a good answer to the most basic question. Why? Terrorism will continue whether American solders are getting killed over there or not.

      • tracey marie October 27th, 2015 at 18:05

        No problems.

      • granpa.usthai October 28th, 2015 at 01:20

        BUTT! –
republiKONs won’t get near the return for their offshore bank investments from foreign war profiteers as they do from themselves when they hold the US Treasury purse strings.

Oh Joy…just what we need …and the baggers are dancing in the streets

“This may mean some American soldiers “will be in harm’s way, no question about it,” …….well we know the Lilly republicans support this then.

    • Roctuna October 27th, 2015 at 17:58

You think so? They’ll find ways to increase the risk to our solders. After all, if Obama proposes it, they work to disrupt it. Sacrificing American lives is not a concern for the right.

    • StoneyCurtisll October 27th, 2015 at 21:22

      apparently not…

    • granpa.usthai October 28th, 2015 at 01:17

one very important thing Americans learned in Vietnam is that GREEDY politicians in this government can and will lie to the people for $$$!

    • fahvel October 28th, 2015 at 05:05

sure did!! don’t worry about the lives of less than white americans – take what you can and leave.

Let us all thank George and Dick and all their buddies great and small for starting this perpetual motion machine of military madness in the Middle East that will never end. Republicans, the military/industrial complex gift that keeps on giving. Hell, even the Russians are back into it again.

    This is not good….

    • granpa.usthai October 28th, 2015 at 01:14

if you’re a RepubliKON with an offshore bank account with entities that invest in war profits, it’s ANOTHER 1,000%+ windfall return!

  9. robert October 27th, 2015 at 23:10

i have to ask the burning question, Whats the objective ? so we send in more troops and the rest of the world sends in more jihadists / terrorists.

cant we make an old news reel and loop it over and over until the questions stop

    • granpa.usthai October 28th, 2015 at 01:12

the objective is to drive the USA deeper into debt (owing _____________?) whilst depositing the war profiteering returns into RepubliKON offshore bank accounts.
FREEZE all RepubliKON offshore bank accounts (like we do foreign nationals/nations) and see how long it takes ISIS to go out of business.

      • robert October 28th, 2015 at 13:56

ahhhh a new military global socialist program / USSA

the hammer and cycle is already taken Start sending in your new flag ideas

    • fahvel October 28th, 2015 at 05:04

the objective is to not allow Russia to actually accomplish something without a permission note from the usa. Fkn childish shit that is gonna cost lives for no reason.

  10. granpa.usthai October 28th, 2015 at 01:07

    DAMN!

didn’t take long to deposit the newly added 32 billion ($32,000,000,000.00) into RepubliKON offshore bank accounts. Hell, they can now afford to spot ISIS 3 billion for another 3 trillion ($3,000,000,000,000.00) war profiteering return!

  11. Frank Foster October 28th, 2015 at 01:36

Wait…uh…could you tell me why we are fighting someone else’s war? I missed that part.

  12. fahvel October 28th, 2015 at 05:03

sounds a lot like “read my lips” or whatever the l’il one said with his codpiece on a battleship. You may be satisfied with obama on the domestic front but on the international field he hasn’t a clue.

  13. fahvel October 28th, 2015 at 05:05

This is not news. It is un-news. This country uses military force, “in combat,” somewhere on this planet basically 7 days a week. If anyone thinks ANY president — left, center, right, or indifferent — would stop that practice, then there’s a lovely bridge for sale in Brooklyn you might be interested in. We do war. We do it all the time. We have never NOT done war, especially not since 9/11, as this book makes painfully clear in painful detail. http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/09/30/naylors-relentless-strike-the-real-thing/

” This country uses military force, “in combat,” somewhere on this planet basically 7 days a week.”

Your immune system is dealing with threats 7 days a week. Your state police force is dealing with threats 7 days a week. Russia, China, and other powers are dealing with threats 7 days a week. ISIS is busy 7 days a week. I have come to accept the fact that this is just how the world works. Disengaging from the world is like shutting down your immune system or disbanding your state police force.

Of course it is also true that your immune system can work against your best interests. Rheumatoid arthritis is a case of the immune system attacking your own body. I am not suggesting that every military action is well-advised. But I cannot imagine a world in which we can afford to stop dealing with emerging threats.

very confusing since russia hasn’t sent enough ground troops to finish the job and if i remember right russia failed in Afghanistan years ago.

last but not least i don’t recall the usa having military rights in this part of the world Im sure congress will back me up on that
