Budget Deal Cuts Social Security Disability, Medicare

Posted by | October 27, 2015 11:30 | Filed under: Politics

The greatly-heralded tentative budget deal reached Monday decreases spending on Social Security and Medicare.

The agreement would raise spending by $80 billion over two years, not including a $32 billion increase included in an emergency war fund. Those increases would be offset by cuts in spending on Medicare and Social Security disability benefits, as well as savings or revenue from an array of other programs, including selling oil from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserves. The Medicare savings would come from cuts in payments to doctors and other health care providers.

…the Social Security Disability Insurance program would be amended, in part to tighten and standardize eligibility requirements that now vary by state. That change was projected to save the government $5 billion.

In addition, the accord calls for eliminating a provision of the Affordable Care Act, not yet in force, that would require businesses with more than 200 employees to automatically enroll their workers for health insurance.

War rages on and expands while the poor and disabled are hurt by cuts. Shame on our government, raise taxes on corporations and the wealthy and close loopholes, stop hurting those who need help the most.

Give the Dems a big majority (not just a few votes) and we will see a lot of changes for the good. FDR was able to get things done in his early years because of the huge majority of Dems in the House and Senate.

any member of your congress that supported this should be tarred and feathered and them be sterilized in a very unsanitary way – what the hell is wrong with you people?

Did it ever occur to you that it’s you and not us people? This way the RWNJs can’t hold us hostage and hurt our country. This deal will take us through the election campaign. President Obama got almost everything he wanted. That’s a win win if you ask me. Maybe fahvel doesn’t realize he’s on the wrong side.

doctors and healthcare providers won’t be happy with this. many of them are no longer accepting medicare/medicaid patients because it’s not worth it. if you owe your physician, say, $5,000 and Medicare pays 80%, who pays the other 20%?. Not everybody qualifies for Medicaid or the ACA.

    • tracey marie October 27th, 2015 at 15:42

everyone can get ACA, not all qualify for subsidies.

The American people have once again been beaten and raped and robbed. On a lighter note, segments of the stock market are doing well, the industrial military/complex continues to dominate and it’s even better than before to be the one percent.

instead of hurting suffering US CITIZENS more, why not increase their benefits by the 32 billion (emergency war spending) deposits into RepubliKON offshore bank accounts.
Freeze all RepubliKON offshore bank accounts thereby cutting off monies to ISIS, eliminating the need to send US TROOPS back into Iraq or Syria.
32 million investment buys a lot of war machine for ISIS – but well worth it if you’re looking at an initial 32 billion return.

While I’m sure there are a few, very few, on SSDI that shouldn’t be, I doubt that the number is anywhere near what these right wing nutjobs think.

So, wait… saving 5 billion by hitting Social Security, but spending 32 billion on an emergency war fund, is a good plan?
Nobody thought… “Hey, maybe we should set aside 27 billion for the emergency fund and use the 5 billion to leave SS alone”?

Just another reason to vote for Bernie!
(He said he’d vote against it.)
