NRA Pushing Bill To Legalize Silencers

They want to protect the ears of hunters.

Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) introduced the benign-sounding “Hearing Protection Act” last week that would legalize silencers in states where they are currently banned.

“Suppressors significantly reduce the chance of hearing loss for anyone who enjoys the shooting sports,” Chris Cox, executive director of National Rifle Association’s lobbying arm, said in a statement.

The NRA is joined in supporting the bill by National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the American Suppressor Association whose members would profit from the bill’s passage.

According to GOA executive director Larry Pratt, “Silencers are not used in crime, nor would they be if more widely available,” adding that it is “not only unconstitutional, but embarrassing” that there are restrictions on silencers.

Gun silencers are prohibited in a handful of states under current law, with 37 states allowing them for gun owners who have gone through a more rigorous background check.

The gun silencer bill would speed up the process by permitting anyone who passes a basic firearms background check to purchase a suppressor and would waive the $200 application fee that is paid to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

So I’m going to go and buy a silencer for a few hundred dollars because buying 500 pairs of earplugs for $35 just doesn’t make sense.

    • whatthe46 October 26th, 2015 at 15:34

well, the silencers are not for target shooting that’s for sure.

      • Red Eye Robot October 26th, 2015 at 16:41

Really? Because that’s where nearly all of them are used.

        • tracey marie October 26th, 2015 at 17:02

hahahahaha, they are used for hunting.

        • whatthe46 October 26th, 2015 at 17:39

“nearly” the rest of the times they are used because a certain someone doesn’t want others to know they are being fired upon.

          • Red Eye Robot October 26th, 2015 at 22:06

They are used in hunting. They are popular for hunting feral hogs down south because the muzzle report doesn’t scare off the whole pack allowing multiple kills.

    Bloody death merchants.
There will be thousands, if not millions, James Bond in the country that would be like being licensed to kill… because it would make it a lot easier to shoot anyone quietly.
The average yearly gun-deaths would sky rocket from 30,000 to what… 100,000 maybe?

    • Red Eye Robot October 26th, 2015 at 16:40

According to the ATF there are already 800,000 legally owned silencers in America right now. Why aren’t those being used to kill? Furthermore making a silencer can be accomplished with $20 and a few simple tools. The info is available on the internet and Youtube.

      • tracey marie October 26th, 2015 at 17:01

ther are less then 500,000 according to the ATF and 1/3 are homemade.

How do you know they’re not? You don’t. You’re just blowing it out your ass as usual.

        • Red Eye Robot October 26th, 2015 at 22:07

          Prove they are

          • Roctuna October 27th, 2015 at 07:46

You made the original contention so that’s your job, not mine. I’m quite comfortable with my opinion based on the history of the item. It’s a history of use dominated by criminals and poachers that led to tight regulation in nearly all countries. Only in the USA, where gun fetishists need yet another piece of gun technology to satisfy their fantasies, are people subjected to yet another looming threat. If hearing protection was the real goal there are many cheaper and more effective methods.

i can’t believe people are that damn stupid.

      • jybarz October 26th, 2015 at 19:12

There are more civilian guns than the entire population of the USA of about 313,000,000.
        http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-states
If your 800,000 is correct, that’s less than 0.3% of the population.
Do you really know if silencers have not been used to kill people?
Can you really not imagine how much easier to use it than without it to shoot anyone?

        • Red Eye Robot October 26th, 2015 at 22:22

Please, from your personal experience, tell me how easy it was to kill another person with a silenced weapon. And since you’re surely correct, why aren’t police recovering home made silencers from criminals and at crime scenes?

          • jybarz October 26th, 2015 at 22:40

Personal experience? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that a silenced gunshot doesn’t attract attention as the one without. How do you know the police haven’t recovered any?

            • Red Eye Robot October 26th, 2015 at 22:49

Please show me all the news stories. I can find a few stories of illegally made silencers being used, but not even many of those. Are you privy to special secret news the rest of us can’t access?

              • jybarz October 26th, 2015 at 23:25

I’m not your researcher and I won’t satisfy your ignorance and twisted brain.
Making silencers legal would make things worse, won’t it?

                • Red Eye Robot October 27th, 2015 at 02:34

Your knee is jerking, I’d see a doctor about that if I were you.

                  • Obewon October 27th, 2015 at 07:45

Buying a silencer requires the applicant to mail or Fax a photo and fingerprints to the ATF and to pay a $200 tax. The approval process for most guns takes about 20 minutes, but for a silencer it can take nine or 10 months. Good! Keep it that way to give PD the capability to automatically triangulate a shot fired for arrest. Crimefighting is good! -Unless you’re one of Pratt’s Gun Humpers of America.

                  • jybarz October 27th, 2015 at 11:32

Wrong, Jerk. It’s your brainless head that’s jerking.

why aren’t police recovering home made silencers from criminals and at crime scenes?

Since they ARE recovering home made silencers, so your rebuttal was heavy on the butt, but pretty lame on the efficacy front.

      • whatthe46 October 26th, 2015 at 22:16

how do you know they aren’t being used? that’s so stupid to say that they aren’t with certainty. it’s absolutely assinine.

WSJ>The number of such trusts jumped from 840 in 2000 to 40,700 in 2012, according to the ATF, as the trust loophole became more widely known and promoted. As of April 2013, there were 494,452 silencers in American homes, according to the ATF, a figure that is up 73% since 2011. http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702303492504579111243276511128

You know Police triangulate a shot fired pinpointing the shooter for arrest? No? Redeye’s not very bright when it comes to any automated crime fighting technology.

You will not disturb anyone at the movies while you are on a shooting spree. Could do more damage that way.

Banning silencers is unconstitutional? Please point out to me which article and/or amendment mentions silencers.

  5. labman57 October 26th, 2015 at 20:38

Silencers should be standard issue with all handguns so that patriotic American family members can shoot each other without disturbing the neighbors.

  6. illinoisboy1977 October 27th, 2015 at 14:24

Since it can be argued that silencers don’t ensure functionality, the 2nd Amendment doesn’t extend to them. You can use your firearm without a silencer, with no detriment to functionality. In fact, unless a silencer is precision machined to your specific firearm, it will almost certainly throw off the trajectory of your shot. There are minuscule imperfections and surface changes, between the end of your barrel and the barrel of the suppressor. Those imperfections will change the exit velocity of your round, which will likely reduce accuracy.
