“If you change the definition of marriage for one group, what defense do you have for the next group that comes along and wants it changed?” the Republican presidential candidate asked radio host Eric Metaxas on Thursday. “Can you say, ‘oh no we’re just changing it for one group and it’ll be this way forever’ – how is that fair? It just doesn’t make sense.”

Polygamy is “the natural next question,” Carson said. “And on it goes from there.”

Didn’t you hear? Reporting Ben Carson’s words in context is taking him out of context!

    • Larry Schmitt October 13th, 2015 at 15:41

Reporting his words in any way is a crime against nature.

    • Chris October 13th, 2015 at 19:06

It always kills me when Republicans gripe about Media Matters (especially nut cakes like O’Reilly), when the bulk of what they do is simply quote the perp.

  2. tracey marie October 13th, 2015 at 14:58

Polygamy is practiced and allowed in texas and Utah, they have large encamptments, they wear magical underwear, dress like little house on the Prairie, receive tons of welfare and the men marry prepubescent girls, some even related to them.

    • Pat Padrnos October 13th, 2015 at 15:40

Thank you – exactly where I was planning to go with this.
Polygamy has been practiced in the US for quite awhile. If there are any out there who doubt this – you are not paying attention to the news or you are in denial – like the Mormon Church. After the MC was forbidden to practice polygamy many offshoots of their “church” went their own way. They (the MC) choose to ignore the situation and pretend it is not happening and they have no part in it.
In the Southwest it is active and is covered up – even by people in authority – either because they are involved or do not want to deal with it.
And – yes – your comment about these people receiving welfare benefits is true. The tax payers are actually helping fund their lifestyle. “Lifestyle” – not sure if that is the right word word for forcing young girls to marry men who are chosen for them. Another part of this is the “lost boys” who are booted out of various compounds to try to survive on their own. Of course, they cannot stay as the young girls have already been married off. How do they survive out in the world where they are not educated or trained in any skills? Sad situation.
OK – now what was Carson saying about polygamy???

      • tracey marie October 13th, 2015 at 15:47

During the floods a polygamist compound was devestated, showed the women and children out trying to stop the water…no men were visible.

        • Pat Padrnos October 13th, 2015 at 17:36

I recall that. They showed up at the funeral services.

        • The Original Just Me October 13th, 2015 at 19:46

They were at a meeting, couldn’t be disturbed.

      • The Original Just Me October 13th, 2015 at 19:49

Actually, Bigamy and Polygamy is practiced through out the Western U.S. and in Canada.

    • The Original Just Me October 13th, 2015 at 19:45

      Tolerated but not technically legal.

    • Lyndia October 14th, 2015 at 01:36

They are in a religion that allows for such. I think it is a place for pedophiles.

  3. Jimmy Fleck October 13th, 2015 at 15:17

Why shouldn’t we allow multiple adults to get married to each other? Seems like this would just be another form of a corporation.

    • Chris October 13th, 2015 at 19:04

      Mitt, is that you? :)

    • The Original Just Me October 13th, 2015 at 19:44

      Co-operation

  4. Laissez Faire! October 13th, 2015 at 15:33

Why should the State insert themselves into anyone’s marriage? Marriage should phased out from government.

  5. Suzanne McFly October 13th, 2015 at 15:45

I thought he doesn’t say offensive things?

    • Red Mann October 13th, 2015 at 22:00

The biggest offense is the rampant stupidity.

      • Suzanne McFly October 14th, 2015 at 14:02

And that stupidity is one of choice and is not due to his lack of education.

  6. Mike October 13th, 2015 at 15:45

Ben has it backwards…historically marriage was polygamous…then became monogamous…and now homosexual…we’ll be OK

    • whatthe46 October 13th, 2015 at 19:48

wasn’t all that around before gay marriage? at least, i think.

  7. Hirightnow October 13th, 2015 at 16:36

I have no problem with polygamy; hell, with all the shootings going on, it just makes sense to lay in a spare or two…

    • The Original Just Me October 13th, 2015 at 19:42

Just how many mother-in-laws can you put up with ?

      • Hirightnow October 13th, 2015 at 23:46

It is said that one wife is not enough for a man; two will be constantly fighting each other; with three wives, two will inevitably ally with each other against the third, so there is no peace to be had but with four wives.

Me? I’m no fool; I’m single.

        • Dwendt44 October 14th, 2015 at 00:01

In some cases, one wife is one to many.

          • Hirightnow October 14th, 2015 at 00:05

is that “too many”, or “to many”?
            Because the meaning kinda changes……,

        • The Original Just Me October 14th, 2015 at 00:02

In my MUCH younger years, I said I was like the Good Lord, I loved them all.

  8. William October 13th, 2015 at 17:02

Whoever is in charge of keeping Ben from saying stupid sh*t should be fired.

    • whatthe46 October 13th, 2015 at 19:46

no no no no. let him stay on, this is funny.

  9. Dwendt44 October 13th, 2015 at 17:09

But Bennie, that bible you keep touting says polygamy is okie dokie. Along with a few other things we no longer allow. Things like child abuse, rape marriage, incest, slavery and killing those that disagree with you.

    • The Original Just Me October 13th, 2015 at 19:41

      Wonderful Book.

  10. Foundryman October 13th, 2015 at 17:40

Moses may have never parted the Red Sea without polygamy, or lived 400 years or wandered the desert for 40 years searching for the promised land. He would have never had enough sons to get all that done without the 40-50 wives.

  11. DropItLikeItsHot October 13th, 2015 at 18:33

    This may explain it all.

  12. Chris October 13th, 2015 at 19:02

Memo to Dr Carson: Running to the extreme right and then the center like Romney did really doesn’t work well. Remember the “Etch-a-Sketch” comment by the Romney staffer?

First of all, you really don’t stand a chance of being the nominee. If one of your colleagues picks you for his running mate, your record for saying outstandingly stupid things like this will follow you.

Ain’t gonna happen. But thanks for all of the entertainment you provide, shocking as it is.

    • fahvel October 14th, 2015 at 03:52

do you find people like carson who are publicly representing what the usa looks like to the world entertaining?

      • Chris October 14th, 2015 at 07:16

Carson is like the rest of the GOP field: entertaining and also horrifying.

I wonder if he knows the difference between Monogamy, Bigamy, and Polygamy ?

      uh, nope.

              Nope…never saw it

Oh Good God, you have got to watch this movie. It is an Epic, Musical, Comedy, with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. Buy it, Rent it, Beg it, Barrow it, or Steal it from your neighbor, but watch that movie ” Paint Your Wagon “. You will love it. it has some off color comedy in it but it is fantastic. I cannot believe somebody in the U.S. has not seen it. It is three hours long but WATCH IT ! It is the only movie that you will see and hear Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood sing in and they do a very good job of singing. It is my all time favorite movie.

Your man wants to take a second wife?
    He does,
    That’s big o’ him?
Big of him. It’s big o’ me.
    (1930’s movie I think)

  16. The Jomsviking October 13th, 2015 at 20:51

Has anyone been able to make a decent refutation of his logic? It actually seems perfectly reasonable to me.

    • Red Mann October 13th, 2015 at 21:58

Since it involves the concept of consenting adults, the right finds it hard to understand. If one or more consenting adults want to form a relationship, then it’s nobody’s business. Polygamy was okeydokey with Jehovah in the OT as was adultery – concubines, captive women, slaves and so forth.
The legal problems of children, property etc, would be difficult, but not insurmountable.
So the bottom line is – who cares? Only those who wish to control other peoples lives.

    • bpollen October 14th, 2015 at 03:42

And you admit it in public?

Marriage has been changing throughout history. Wasn’t that frickin’ long ago, even in this country, when women married who their fathers told them to marry. Before that, as glorified in the bible, multiple wives and mistresses and forcing yourself on slaves was perfectly acceptable. Ben Carson takes ONE point in that continuum of change and says: Beyond here there be monsters! Every single change in the definition of marriage was innocuous, but this one is where it all becomes meaningless?

I fail to see the logic in the position. It’s a house of cards built on totally unproven assumptions.

      • fahvel October 14th, 2015 at 03:50

hey B, explaining something to a viking like jom is like talking to your plymouth rock about democracy.

      • The Jomsviking October 14th, 2015 at 11:39

I always find it instructive to make small forays into left wing sites like this one. I asked a simple question, without rancor or hyperbole, in the hopes of engaging people who hold a different philosophy than I do. What I got in response was sadly typical. No one can even explain to me why the guy is wrong. Whatever the different standards of marriage have been throughout history – and there have been many, though you have to go back a long way to find anything significantly different from one man + one woman = marriage – it has always held true that it was the union I men and women, for the purposes of starting a family. Arranged marriages were not uncommon for the upper class but for most of western and northern Europe, for the last thousand years (at least) the vast majority of commoners could marry whom they wished, within reason. Of course mother and father had their say but for the most part people had more freedom than modern people seem to realize. Also polygamy was certainly practiced in the desert tribes of the Levant but that in no way impacted how people viewed marriage in the rest of the world. It was never common in Europe.

All that aside, its interesting that on this very site, people commenting on this article have stated that they don’t care if polygamy is legalized. Often while simultaneously criticizing Carson for his statement! It makes no sense to me.

Personally, I’m not a Christian and don’t hold any moral compunctions with polygamy. I do think that it will lead to a bit of chaos and that is always a good thing. In my opinion as long as someone’s not hurting anyone else, they should be free to live as they choose.

        • Dwendt44 October 14th, 2015 at 11:55

Polygamy has been practiced in much of Europe for millennia, long before the ancient Hebrews started copying and plagiarizing the beliefs of other, older religions. The Pagans and even the Vikings had their periods of polygamy.
Most of Africa and parts of southern Asia still allow and practice it.

        • bpollen October 14th, 2015 at 16:01

          “…forays into left wing sites…”

You give yourself too much credit.

You admit that marriage has changed. But you agree that THIS change is the watershed. That’s not logic. You are making assumptions and predictions based on unfounded or at least unproven assertions. Logic requires facts, not supposition built on rumor and innuendo and opinion.

You claim that women who weren’t rich got their own say? Simply not true. Women were chattel, not individuals in their own right. Could there have been women who got to make their own choice? Sure. But that in no way means it was common or prevalent. So the “women got to choose” supposition is not factual. There goes one underpinning of the “sky is falling” view of marriage.

See, you also claim that somehow his anti-gay bigotry and rhetoric disappear because some people don’t have a problem with polygamy. Gee, couldn’t they think that, even though they don’t have a problem with polygamy, they find his proclamation of “gay marriage” being the watershed that leads to polygamy despicable because that assumes that somehow “teh gayz” are a bad thing? And that somehow going back to biblically approved marriages is horrible because “teh gayz.” Again, requires the belief in assumptions that have no proven factual basis.

There is no logic to refute.

I find it instructive that you side with Carson. The least competent of ALL the R candidates for Prez. And that is saying something.

        • Kick Frenzy October 15th, 2015 at 01:24

Hello there, I’m late to the party.

I think you’re right in saying that there is a point here, in that polygamists may see an opportunity to pursue their definition of marriage because the acceptance of marriage that isn’t just between a man and a woman is now legal and popular.
However, I don’t think that it’s an equivalent or that the chaos of it would be a good thing.

I’m fine with polygamy, marry as many people as you want.
BUT, the legal benefits of marriage should remain between two people, otherwise we start getting into legal ramifications that don’t really square with how the country runs.
If a person can marry 3 other people and the related tax credits get multiplied for them all, then we’re entering an area where they are receiving an unfair advantage over married couples.
That’s just one example, but there are a good amount of other issues where allowing for more than two people to be married in the view of the State would upend the way our country works.
Not to mention… can you imagine how crazy checks would get for joint accounts?!?
(Ok, that last point is just for giggles.)

I don’t find fault with Carson suggesting polygamists may want to try to ride the coat-tails of LGBTQ marriage rights.
I do find fault with him trying to force his religious view of marriage on the rest of the country and the assertion that gay marriage is bad and will lead to other bad things.

In short, out of context there is some sense to it… in context, it’s bigoted drivel.

          • bpollen October 15th, 2015 at 03:58

I can back polygamy if we also allow polyandry. Let’s spread the suffering equally!

    • fahvel October 14th, 2015 at 03:48

when logic becomes a part of your thought process, maybe you’d like to come back and offer the folks here another peek into the depths of your emptiness.

Ben Carson like 80%+ of all homophobes are the most aroused by samesex porn. “A shocking, double-blind study released by Harvard, in collaboration with MIT, has revealed that all people who are homophobic are actually homosexuals themselves. The study, which was carried out over the course of 5 years and involved nearly 5,000 male subjects, is being accepted by the American Psychological Association as being “scientifically irrefutable.”https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-big-questions/201206/homophobia-associated-homosexual-arousal-part-ii
