White House Considering Executive Action On Guns

Posted by | October 5, 2015 15:38 | Filed under: Politics

President Obama wants to do something about guns and the White House is considering executive action.

“It’s a high priority and will continue to be until we start to see more progress on this issue in this town,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters today at the press briefing.

Earnest said he would “quibble” with anyone who criticized the president for not voicing any specific gun control proposals during his press conference, asserting that the White House was working behind the scenes for more executive actions on guns.

“I can tell you that they’re not stumped, they’re continuing to review the law that’s on the books and continuing to consult with legal authorities but also others who may have ideas about what steps that can be taken to keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” Earnest said.

Here’s something more to think about.

When our PM at the time, the right-wing John Howard, organised the change to gun laws, he couldn’t do it as the PM, because our constitution doesn’t give the federal government

jurisdiction on gun laws – those lie with the states. So he formed an agreement with all of the states to have laws passed. That’s right, it wasn’t one Australian government that did it, it was nine of them (federal, plus six states and two territories). This included right-wing governments in Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory, and Western Australia as well as the federal government.

And what’s more, when John Howard announced it, a heap of gun fanatics tried to join his party in the hopes of getting enough power to stop it from happening. You know what would happen in this situation in America, of course, but can you guess what happened here in Australia? The party refused them membership! That’s right – the right wing party refused to allow nutjobs into the party. I may not have liked John Howard’s policies on most issues, but on this, most Australians stand in solidarity with him, no matter their politics.

    • halfwayin October 6th, 2015 at 12:21

That is incredible. Thanks for sharing that Glen.

    • Diana October 6th, 2015 at 17:54

So in YOUR political system, the nut-jobs weren’t ALREADY in the right-wing party? Because they ARE here.

      • Glen October 7th, 2015 at 04:37

Well, there are some nutjobs in the party. But that’s true of all parties on both sides. They’re certainly not the dominant part of the party, though.

It has been a little worse in the last six years or so, but sanity has started to return – if you haven’t heard, the (somewhat nutjobbish) PM we had for the last couple of years, Tony Abbott, was deposed by another member of his party, Malcolm Turnbull, who is far more sane, and capable of actually speaking with some aplomb.

  2. halfwayin October 6th, 2015 at 12:26

At this very moment, every community in the US has a contingency of these gun nuts.

They are all over this country and this gun nut disease seems to run in the family.

The fact is none of are safe, and you can thank the NRA lobbyists for that fact.

    Guys that look like this.

    • halfwayin October 6th, 2015 at 12:30

And end up doing things like this.

    What about phasers?

  4. Jerry October 6th, 2015 at 14:21

Center for Disease Control (CDC) Gun Assault Data from (2001-2013):

Firearm assaults resulting in someone being wounded (647,878 between 2001-2013) in America: http://webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/nfirates2001.html

Firearm homicides resulting in someone being killed (153,144 between 2001-2013) in America: http://webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate10_us.html

The Founding Fathers would be appalled with the above gun violence data because Americans gunning down other Americans was NEVER their intent when they wrote the 2nd Amendment.

So just because you may be extremely pro-gun doesn’t mean that you can just pretend that gun violence is not a huge problem in the United States of America, because it is whether you want to admit it or not.

    • anothertoothpick October 6th, 2015 at 14:26

      Agreed. See this.

      • Diana October 6th, 2015 at 17:57

PLUS, this is not the 1780’s. If the government wants to come get you, you’re toast. Your little arsenal will be melted down in the missile strike, if they want you gone. Stop being delusional.

  5. Diana October 6th, 2015 at 18:11

Let me preface the statements below by stating the DIFFERENCE in the US is these people have easy access to guns, not that they are a problem in the US only. They EXIST everywhere….

“The list of recent mass shooters with a history of mental health services and psychiatric drug “treatment” include John Russell Houser who, in July of this year, opened fire in a Lafayette, LA, movie theater, Aurora, Co., shooter,James Holmes, Fort Hood shooter, Ivan Lopez and Washington Navy Yard shooter, Aaron Alexis.

There are 4 million teens and young adults in the U.S. taking antidepressants, which have been documented to cause hostility, abnormal behavior, mania, violence, and suicidal and homicidal ideation and carry serious drug warnings.

All the above had been prescribed psychiatric drugs known to cause hostility, abnormal behavior, mania, violence, and suicidal and homicidal ideation and carry serious drug warnings both in the U.S. and internationally. Despite 22 international drug regulatory warnings citing violence, psychosis, mania and even homicidal ideation as side effects of these drugs, there has yet to be a federal investigation to determine the extent of mass induced acts of violence that could be caused by psychiatric drug use.

Given the obvious adverse events associated with psychiatric drug “treatment,” whether Mercer has a psychiatric drug history may be key to understanding the violent behavior.”

    • Diana October 6th, 2015 at 18:12

So, considering this…now you have not only the NRA, but big PHARMA that doesn’t want anything to change.

    • kat karsecs October 6th, 2015 at 20:29

What about the millions of people with mental illnesses who actually benefit from their meds, or are actually too chronically depressed or frightened to leave the house, or who can’t even get meds and live on the streets cuz the programs to help them have been destroyed (by Republicans, I might add), and/or are simply too poor to ever afford the arsenals these shooters amass, and are not even inclined to violence to begin with? I agree that psych meds are over-prescribed, though I’m not sure that’s what you’re saying here, but I wonder if you’re proposing that the ONLY cause of mass shootings is supposed “mental illness”, or that the mentally ill should thus be treated like criminals? Can you be a little more specific about your point?

  6. mcalleyboy October 6th, 2015 at 21:43

Nut in the White House is ready to destroy and erode your right with red tape and tougher gun laws, this also affects minorities who carry concealed, fight back because we don’t want to end up like Australia.

    • whatthe46 October 6th, 2015 at 21:56

you are exactly the reason why we need gun control. and that’s what you’re afraid of. ’cause your ass doesn’t need one.

      • mcalleyboy October 6th, 2015 at 22:36

Famous last words as a guy opens up on you at your favorite foodie spot and then what? I know you either live in a hoodlum neighborhood are a very nice spot so gun violence doesn’t affect you in any way…typical Progressive thoughts.

        • whatthe46 October 6th, 2015 at 23:03

um, what are the famous last words?

          • mcalleyboy October 7th, 2015 at 02:38

OMG…Oh…MYYYY…GOD, praying to the God you forgot about decades ago or Stop it!…..Lol and I have kids….lol, what are famous last words come out, well ask the reporter that went to a movie theater in Canada and it got shot up by a mad man and then she went to the theater in Colorado and of course they got her, I think she mentioned boy I’m a dummy for not getting that gun, boy I’m totally confused how could this happen in a gun free zone, twice in two different countries.

            • Tracy Lund October 7th, 2015 at 06:18

good lord, you are really and truly mentally unstable. bud, you need help, you are exactly the kind of person who should never, ever be allowed near a gun.

              • mcalleyboy October 7th, 2015 at 06:29

Not only do I have a carry concealed license but I can carry in nearly all states, I’ve never shot anyone. I now live abroad though and immigrants aren’t allowed guns.

        • DamionThorn October 7th, 2015 at 02:13

Gun violence affects every single person, and thus, the #1 goal should be about eliminating it.

          • mcalleyboy October 7th, 2015 at 02:20

I want to wish you luck on riding the planet of evil people, it’s not the gun, what about ax, hatchet and knife murders aren’t those numbers larger than gun stats?

    • arc99 October 6th, 2015 at 22:04

you don’t give a shit when thousands of minorities are disenfranchised by voter id and closed dmv offices, so please stop pretending the rights of minorities matter to you.

I am sick to death of bullsh*t right wing hypocrisy…

and what is wrong with Australia? they have universal health care and do not spend trillions of dollars trying to be the world’s policeman. we could learn a few things from our friends down under.

      • mcalleyboy October 6th, 2015 at 22:34

Have you been to Australia? It’s very expensive especially electronic items and they don’t deal with borders, so you can’t compare Australia with the US. No right wing conspiracy, just leave our guns alone, we don’t mess with your gay marriage and alternative lifestyles.

        • tracey marie October 6th, 2015 at 22:46

you don’t even live in the states

          • whatthe46 October 6th, 2015 at 23:52

so he says. but, he also says that his son goes to a school in his community, in the country where he lives, where they abduct little kids and chop their body parts up and throw the discarded little ones on the road for everyone to see. so he says.

          • DamionThorn October 7th, 2015 at 02:12

Guess what…there is a world beyond your borders…and intelligent people care about what happens in countries other than the one they live in.

Seeing as the entire free world thinks the US is insane for being the ONLY country with no gun control and the ONLY country with mass shootings….it’s about time the US listens to, um, the rest of the free world and does something to try to eliminate gun violence within their borders.

Until terrorists kill more Americans than Americans with guns kill Americans, it’s about time the US stop focusing on other people with guns in other countries and start putting attention on the idiotic lack of laws within their own borders.

The biggest threat to the United States is…themselves.
It’s time to eliminate the NRA and make purchasing a gun mean mandatory back ground checks, psych tests and a six-month waiting period minimum before ANY lethal firearm can be purchased. And all firearms should be registered and laws passed that all firearms must be kept under lock and key at all times with ammunition locked up separately.

            • tracey marie October 7th, 2015 at 15:47

focus, we are talking about the stes we live in.

You should see the guns here and murder rates, abductions, human trafficking and corruption it would make you think just how lucky you have it stateside….oh and the stats don’t match with reality.

i know you can find a pic for me, i’ve seen it. America, where we strive to regulate a womans choice, where it’s law to enforce a 48 hr waiting period to decide to abort, there’s no law in place for waiting periods to own a gun that kills the living. it went something like that.

NUCLEAR ARMS have not killed one single person in the US or Australia yet many of the konservative republikon krowd seem to be twiddling their thumbs on upholding the basic 2nd amendment right to keep and bear them.

    • DamionThorn October 7th, 2015 at 02:04

….says only gun-loving psychopaths who think kids being shot is ok.
Smart people think what Australia did was monumentally incredible as it all but eradicated shootings and suicide….permanently. Only an imbecile argues against that.

Truly…you have to be a whole special level of stupid to think the right to have guns is more important than the right for humans to, you know, LIVE.

I wasn’t worried one iota. I was on top of a grassy knoll at an outdoor light rail train stop with plenty of cover had I needed any. The girlfriend-beater was downrange 150 yards away. I had the advantage of the sun in his eyes had I needed it. PD responded.

Lol… hey a little off topic but the whole grassy knoll theory was just that, the shots did come from the school book depository and when one of Kennedy’s security detail stood up with his M-16 or similar the car speed up and he slipped and triggered the shots, vehicles behind the security detail smelled gun powder.

            • fredoandme October 8th, 2015 at 08:00

she shot the gunman, he then killed himself. no shooting was prevented, total dead 4, 5 wounded, in two locations. lady with a gun (one of approximately 15 armed persons on site) later said the ungrateful church kicked her out when they found out she is a lesbian. church said she’s lying. she had been fired as a police officer for lying.
up to 15 guns in the church prevented nothing.

Sorry to hear about your friends…so …. if your friends were killed why don’t you feel the need to protect yourself, I’ll bet your vehicle is kept in tip top shape with the best insurance you can afford, you have the latest cell phone or tablet and you don’t feel that your life is worth much? don’t you feel that life is more important then material things? Or your not able to take action with a weapon, just curious.

i think of my car as a purse on wheels and i couldn’t tell you what maintenance he performs, has performed, pays others to perform, or what he allows to go unchecked on the damned thing. frankly, i detest owning a car. always have. my cell phone only makes calls. we paid $9.95 for it about four years ago. my minutes are pre-paid and have accumulated well over 3,000 minutes. goin’ for the record in unused minutes. no camera, no texting. meh. it’s a phone. only 3 or 4 people even know the number. have no use for a tablet. don’t do facebook.
none of which has anything to do with owning a gun. no gun prevented my friends’ deaths. in fact, without the guns the killers used, we wouldn’t be having this conversation and i’d have more friends. don’t waste your time on the subject. owning a gun is not logical.

                    • mcalleyboy October 8th, 2015 at 19:12

Sounds like your trying to deny American’s the right to defend themselves because that’s your plan. I don’t agree with a gay union but I don’t deny them their marriage, so shouldn’t we all make our own decisions and stop with regulation’s, knives are very dangerous and kill also but we need them for cutting meats, vegetables, if we take away guns (330 million plus) Law enforcement won’t have any and it will leave our nation vulnerable, we need suppliers to make guns or these guys move somewhere else, there’s no stopping guns and that’s a fact.

you’re on to the plan, huh? gay unions don’t leave dead people in their wake like gun unions do. knives? no new analogies to make; just relying on the old tried and trite? typical.
nothing you can or will ever say will change me into a second amendment supporter.

1.2 Million people are living with AID’s in the US and how may people are they infecting? I’m not an NRA member but they are the only pro-gun voice. hey if you don’t want to protect yourself that’s your decision and some people shouldn’t carry guns because they won’t use them, it’s not for everyone. I was Navy Rescue Swimmer and what I learned in training was that many people panic in a serious happening or situation unlike me I feel nothing I’m ready to go, I’m focused and ready to act.

rescue. after the fact. like all good guys with guns. you’ll never, ever prevent a shooting.
                      you think it’s all glory.
                      end of discussion.

Nut on the internet wets ’em over the big scary black guy elected twice!

      • mcalleyboy October 7th, 2015 at 05:55

He’s not supported by his own party, what planet you living on?

        • bpollen October 7th, 2015 at 06:01

Earth. And he was the chosen candidate of his party, twice, so I still say Nut on the internet wets ’em over a big scary black guy. Is this a consistent response to males of other ethnicities? Just those with better educations? More accomplished? You need to talk about your phobias to get a grip on them.

He isn’t a big and scary black guy. He’s a little half-white sissy.

Solve the fatherlessness problem, and you will eliminate most of the gun crime.

if we could just solve ignorance and stupidity, we’d be rid of your ilk.

    • DamionThorn October 7th, 2015 at 02:03

      What…a stupid post.
You know how you solve gun crime? Remove all guns.

    • bpollen October 7th, 2015 at 04:32

Empirical data to back up your assertion? I bet you almost every single criminal who uses a gun to commit a crime drank milk! If you only outlawed milk, we’d solve the problem!

< After quitting my office job one year ago, I was blessed to get familiar with this amazing freelance job opportunity on internet that was a life-saver… They hire people to work from home. Last check after being on this job for them for four months was 10000 dollars… Cool thing about it was that the only requirement for the job is simple typing skills and connection to the internet… >

If Michael Brown had a gun when that evil cop Darren Wilson was shooting at him he might be alive today….

    Right?

Disarm the citizens and only the cops will have guns….

Only one quarter of Americans are crazy enough to own a gun: one third of households have someone who owns gun. In the late seventies and early eighties, half of households had a gun owner. So Americans may be slow to learn, but they are teachable. Just like with cigarettes, sodas and unsafe-at-any-speed cars, Americans become more educated and make better decisions. They know that a home with a gun is 12 times more certain of a gun death than a home without a gun. Owning a gun is the most selfish thing any person can ever do.

Gun addiction is obvious: for those who own a gun, they average seven guns! With addicts, one is too many and a thousand aren’t enough.

Seven guns! These are people who cannot feed their kids decent food, paint their skanky houses or pay for health insurance, but they own guns….lots of guns. It is disgusting. WhiteTrashAmerica.

The least educated own the most guns and the most educated rarely own guns.

Conservatives own guns more than twice as often as liberals. You hear gunshots: they are coming from the gun of a right-winger.

So, the $229 Billion cost of gun violence is owed by the right-wing: they are the gunsterbators, the gun addicts, the gunvangelicals of our great nation. Those cowardly babies insist on having guns infest our nation just to satisfy their chronic fear of adulthood: they need to pay the bill for their irresponsibility.

You need to pay the costs, you gun addicts. I’m sick of paying your bills, you freeloaders.

Grow up, man up, put your guns away, cowards. (Few women own guns, so it is a male insecurity thing…..you know the reason. We ALL know the real reasons that men insist on having guns.)

    Grow up

    Man up

    Put your guns away.
