Pope Francis and the Vatican have to rely on local authorities of the church when there is a visit to foreign countries, and if there is a sense that the Pope has been misled, there is hell to pay. Visits with the Pope in D.C. were arranged through the office of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the papal nuncio, or envoy, in Washington.

The Rev. James Martin, editor at large of the Jesuit magazine America, had cautioned in an article this week that the pope meets many well-wishers on his trips, and that news of the meeting with Ms. Davis had been manipulated.

“I was very disappointed to see the pope having been used that way, and that his willingness to be friendly to someone was turned against him,” Father Martin said in an interview on Friday…

Archbishop Viganò is turning 75 in January, the age at which bishops must submit a formal request to the Vatican asking for permission to resign. These requests are not automatically accepted, and bishops often stay in their appointments well past age 75. But if Archbishop Viganò is held responsible for what is seen as a grave misstep on an important papal trip, he is likely to be removed at the first respectable opportunity, according to several church analysts.

    Kim Davis had her name removed from these marriage certificates so what…seems…to…be… the… problem? Such an attack on a very religious and devout Christian, the Pope is known world-wide as a very nice man, now you see why the rest of the work can’t stand us, it’s the gay issue and abortions.

      According to law, she can’t alter documents, and those documents have to be uniform throughout the state, as in all have the name of clerks except for hers. So the problem is that she is saying that federal law doesn’t apply to her, that she can refuse to follow the laws of her state that govern her office, and that she has the right to deny legal rights to ALL people because of “teh GAYZ!”

      And I read foreign press. They think America is a bunch of warmongering gun fetishists and bigots. They think America is crazy. They think that America doesn’t have any qualms about directly involving themselves in other countries political process. They think Americans are rude and pretentious and self-involved. But what I DO NOT read is that ” it’s the gay issue and abortions.”

        Laws need to change… if someone feels that they’ll got to hades if they have their name printed on a marital license then why is it needed? They got their cake and license what else do they want.

                I had it wrong, I meant the Catholic Church. Gay lifestyle and unions are very open and for the most part supported but the Catholic leadership made it clear (SE Asia) there won’t be any gay marriages.

              That is precisely the point. Individual catholics are free to approve or disapprove of gay anything they want. Governments, which are secular, even in Brazil, Ireland and Spain, let alone here, approve of gay rights because that just means equal rights for all citizens.

              The majority of Catholic men and women support same-gender civil marriage equality. Unlike other Christian denominations, Catholics are, as a whole, able to separate the sacrament of marriage as a religious rite to civil marriage as a legal right. Same-gender couples are not and have never been asking for unfettered access to the sacrament of marriage in the Roman Catholic Church.

              Compared to other sects of Christianity, Catholicism is more likely to uphold the “give unto Caesar” mentality and able to draw the line between where their own religious faith ends and the religious beliefs of others begin. While that wasn’t the case throughout history, it is more the case today. Roman Catholics have proven, at least in the United States, that they understand what religious freedom means (both freedom of and freedom from religion) with the occasional exception like this archbishop above.

              In my own experience, I rest assured knowing that Roman Catholics would not try to force their religious beliefs on me through the rule of law – or at least not to the same degree as your more modern, evangelical Christian denominations in the US *cough* Southern Baptist *cough*.

                Agree that Catholic worshipers do accept the gay lifestyle, not so much the church though, they remain steady but it’s either support the teachings or don’t, the bible makes it clear not to worship idols but the Catholic Church is very large on Idol worshipping (they don’t seem to think so though) and for the most part, they don’t follow the Old Testament very well or try to re-interpret the words, they 10 Commandments seem to be clear though.

              Show me your personally conducted polling amongst Brazilians that shows their opinion of gay marriage. Because without that, all available evidence shows that they DO support gay marriage. You claimed that I couldn’t find a Catholic nation supporting it. You were wrong there (easily proven wrong to boot) so there is more than adequate reason to disbelieve your claims without supporting evidence.

              I’ll assume that is a question, though you write it as a statement. You are right, I don’t know “Chatholisim” and neither does anyone else in the world. But if you are so ignorant of the religion that you are clueless how they spell it, I’ll take my six-days-a-week Catholic brainwashing mass at St. Mary’s, along with the nuns and priests in my family, as sufficient familiarity with the religion to equal any expertise a Chatholic claims.

              We’ll just wait for the documentation to support the polling of Brazilian “Chatholics” you must have done to know that the Brazilan government is forcing gay marriage on them.

        I have had friends from all over the globe from being a military spouse,since 1980. We email and talk on the phone regularly. I have a relative from Saudi and from New Zealand.

      The Pope likes us just fine, he even said so. Abortion is legal in this nation as well as in several others.We have a separation of church and state. Davis is very welcome to her own beliefs, however she took an oath to uphold the Constitution. The Supreme Court ruled and gay marriage is legal. She does not have to like it. She doesn’t even have to do her job. But if she chooses not to, she needs to quit and let someone else who will do the job have it.

      The rest of the world doesn’t like us because they see us as reckless and war hungry. Note how England (about our closet ally in the past) has opened an embassy in Iran with other allies working on that. About 6-7 other countries have said that they are going to ignore the GOP and cut the deal with Iran, they are fed up with republicans. They are tired of us wasting our time on social issues. They want us to lead or get out of the way.

      At the same time, we have a separation of church and state and the Pope has every legal right to believe how he chooses and to meet with anybody he wants to. I didn’t support Davis being released but once released there was no reason she shouldn’t have been able to meet with the Pope. It isn’t our business.

      His views on the dangers of climate change is based on his science background and facts plus his belief in the Bible. His views on gay marriage are based on his religious beliefs and he is entitled to both.

        War is a reality and way for man to evolve, it becomes slaughter when you take away a citizens right to own a weapon. In the beginning I felt Obama was right in taking out world leaders, draw-down of our military but it turns out both were a huge blunder, assassination of world leaders is actually a no-no and now we know why, so Russia has a better heads up than the community leader in the WH and Chicago is thug central full of violence and has the toughest gun laws, so another blunder by Obeersummit.

He also doesn’t like people being on death row and asked that one state spare a woman on death row, which they declined to do. And he doesn’t have to like gay marriage. It is his right to decide how he feels on these issues. Just as it is our own right to decide for ourselves.

          I don’t think he would agree with you at all on your theory about war. And he seems to like President Obama just fine…..

          1) What the pope thinks of a woman’s right to choose is irrelevant. When he starts giving birth (let alone having sex), then we might take his opinion into consideration.

          2) a fetus is a potential baby. If it is not viable outside the woman’s body, it is not a baby and therefore cannot be murdered.

          3) War is a choice. Killing people in war, although it is murder, it’s usually considered by people like you to be considered “collateral damage”.

          4) If you take away somebody’s killing device, it cuts down on his chances of murdering someone.

          5) President Obama doesn’t have a hard on for wars, which is why he takes a more peaceful approach to negotiations, regardless of what you warmongering, armchair generals may think.

          6) It’s true that Chicago has one of the toughest gun laws in the country. Unfortunately, it only takes 20 minutes to drive into Indiana, a red state who has no gun control laws and practically sells guns and ammo out of vending machines, and purchase a killing device for a song.

      I am a liberal, not a conservative, and this type of thinking is what I would expect of conservative.Not only would I not sign such a petition but I am going to post against such a measure and ask that you please reconsider..

      I am an atheist, I think religion is hooey, and I support gay marriage and same and equal rights under the law. I supported Davis being arrested and do not feel she should have been released. But the Pope is a world leader and he has the right to meet with anybody he wants to, and Davis has the right to meet with the Pope too.

      The Pope is not an American, has no obligation to see a separation of church and state, and his meeting with someone opposed to gay marriage is in keeping with his church. It is one of the reasons why I reject religion. We do have a separation of church and state and IF that petition is trying to get someone fired because of the meeting than whoever crafted the petition is no better than Davis. The separation between church and state goes both ways. The church is protected and has the right to believe anything they want…….legally.

      If you don’t like that the Pope opposes gay marriage, then address that issue with the church. Get them to change their thinking on gay marriage. But don’t blame the Pope for living up to his beliefs and the church teaching. He might meet with killers, rapists, drunks, prostitutes, all manor of socially unacceptable people but he has that right to do so.

          I am female, married for over 30 yrs, and have several children.

          I support same and equal protections under the law in honor of my family members who have served honorably in the military…..spouse nearly 25 yrs his dad 28, and 2 grandsons in for up to 10 yrs, and a sone and 2 daughter-in-laws serving……so 5 family members now serving.

          They took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and the United States for ALL Americans, not just conservatives or liberals, not for Christians or non-Christians, and not for gay or straight.

          All of my kids are straight, all but one has children and the last one has only been married a couple of years….think they are talking about kids now.

              I am white, living in what was a white dominant nation, upper class, and sexually the side most acceptable in the nation. It will be impossible for me to tell you that I know what it feels like to have gone through what you have gone through. I can never feel that. I am glad I didn’t and sorry that you or anybody has had to. That is as good as I can get from a place of privilege that I didn’t earn.

              But that doesn’t change the facts I gave for asking for you to reconsider the petition. Wrong being done to you does not justify you doing wrong to someone else. You are justified to FEEL anyway you do and do not have to answer for your feelings.

              I used to dream that my husband’s ex-wife would fall into an open manhole and swirl around in the sewer system…..and take my husband with her, but I wouldn’t actually remove the manhole cover. It is wrong to try to tell the Pope who to meet with. We don’t even have a clue to what he said to her. That just doesn’t even matter. If you don’t like it, don’t be Catholic or write a letter to the church and tell them it is about time they came up to modern times. It won’t happen yet but the push has to come and be consistent.

              Good luck….maybe read the Constitution and remember the oath…..that might help. I don’t see you need to forgive Kim for anything……I am not going to.

          the Constitution is important. It defines who we are as a nation. It tells the world what our values are, what we are willing to fight and die for if needed. If we don’t live up to the promises in that document, then what difference would it be if we surrendered our rights to the terrorists or too the communists in times past. We need to protect what we have, honor it, and live it.

          The separation of church and state protects religion from people like me that would like to see it eliminated and it protects me from people like Davis who would force her religious views onto the rest of the nation.

          It is like saying we have free speech as long as you say what I want to hear, then you can’t have free speech. Having it is no good if it isn’t used and it comes with NO guarantees that we will only hear what we want to hear. We ahve to be adults and go back to the document that defines us.

          I should have said that my sexuality may be of interest to you for some reason, but I don’t need to be gay to support gay rights. I don’t need to be Catholic to support the ope, I just need to do the right thing based on the Constitution and the laws of this land.

          Same and equal comes from I believe the 14th Amendment at any rate, it is the law and we are a nation of laws. And we also have that separation of church and state…….I fiercely argued for Davis to be thrown in jail because it was the right thing to do. Freedom is complicated, but we either support it or we don’t. We don’t get to pick and choose and expect that everyone else has to follow. The laws are there for all of us.

      Where have you been when the WBC repeatedly capered about flinging feces? Do you have a petition you’ve sent to any president to issue a Letter of Protest on the WBC? Because I find them astronomically more reprehensible than one act of one archbishop. Or have you created a petition for a Letter of Protest for Huckabee meeting with Kim Davis? Or anybody else meeting with Kim Davis (Ted Cruz, maybe?)

      I’m not a defender or apologist for Catholicism, but in the language of religion, you are showing outrage over venal sin when there are so many mortal sins you are ignoring.

      You guys are the proof I need that this country continues to deny an honest truth. That hatred is a big part of the national psyche. A Letter of Protest is a legitimate tool our government can use as a tool. Not everyone will agree, as obviously opined in here.

      However, I still have to right to create a petition just like each of you have to right to provide your opinions. And no, I’m not surprised the hatred exhibited by some of you. I hope you all went to Sunday church as expected of such perfect people as yourselves.

      Oh yes, one other thing. Words like flinging feces, crap, and the exhibited overall hate just goes to show that we still have a long way to go. As long as ignorant people exist, we must continue to fight and not relent for one moment. Anyone who believes that the separation of church and state is alive and well are only turning a blind eye. The mingling of Church and State has been around for thousands of years and it ain’t going anywhere.
