Boehner To Quit Congress At End Of October

Posted by | September 25, 2015 09:40 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

UPDATE, 11:00amEDT – “Screw you! I QUIT!!!”

Speaker John A. Boehner, under intense pressure from conservatives in his party, will resign one of the most powerful positions in government and give up his House seat at the end of October, throwing Congress into chaos as it tries to avert a government shutdown.

Mr. Boehner, who was first elected to Congress in 1990, made the announcement in an emotional meeting with his fellow Republicans on Friday morning.

The Ohio representative struggled from almost the moment he took the speaker’s gavel in 2011 to manage the challenges of divided government and to hold together his fractious and increasingly conservative Republican members.

Most recently, Mr. Boehner, 65, was trying to craft a solution to keep the government open through the rest of the year, but was under pressure from a growing base of conservatives who told him that they would not vote for a bill that did not defund Planned Parenthood. Several of those members were on a path to remove Mr. Boehner as speaker, though their ability to do so was far from certain.

It will be up to the majority of the members of the House now to choose a new leader, and the leading candidate is Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the majority leader, who is widely viewed more favorably by the more conservative members. The preferred candidate among many Republicans, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, has said he does not want the job.

“John Boehner has been a great leader of the Republican Party and the House of Representatives,” Mr. Ryan said Friday in a prepared statement. “This was an act of pure selflessness. John’s decades of service have helped move our country forward, and I deeply value his friendship. We will miss John, and I am confident our conference will elect leaders who are capable of meeting the challenges our nation faces. I wish John and his family well as he begins the next phase of his life.”

Anyone want to bet he’s beating a hasty exit because Shadow Speaker and Peter Venkman lookalike Ted Cruz is going to shut down the government?

The original story, which went live just before 10amEST, only mentioned his pending resignation as Speaker of the House. The Grey Lady reports:

Speaker John A. Boehner will resign from Congress and give up his House seat at the end of October, according to aides in his office.

Mr. Boehner was under extreme pressure from the right wing of his conference over whether or not to defund Planned Parenthood in a bill to keep the government open.

He is proud of what the majority has accomplished? What have they accomplished?

      • allison1050 September 25th, 2015 at 10:01

Fabulous retirement and medical but I don’t remember if they can still take whatever remains is their “war chests”.

        • Suzanne McFly September 25th, 2015 at 11:31

Okay, I will agree they did accomplish that.

        • LoisB September 25th, 2015 at 18:26

          I believe they can.

          • allison1050 September 25th, 2015 at 18:42

Thanks for letting me know I just can’t imagine them taking a vote to do away with their war chests but I never read anything about it.

      • allison1050 September 25th, 2015 at 10:18

They did accomplish 50+ votes on ACA and he got their real work hours down to approximately 1/3 of the year versus working more than half. They spend the 3 days they’re in DC usually on the phone and doing lunch working on raising campaign funds for their next elections.

        • Suzanne McFly September 25th, 2015 at 11:35

I guess I should of said accomplishments that the citizens have benefitted from, not just him and his cohorts.

      • mea_mark September 25th, 2015 at 10:19

Divisiveness, that they blamed on Obama.

        • Suzanne McFly September 25th, 2015 at 11:35

They were able to shut down the U.S. Government.

        • Suzanne McFly September 25th, 2015 at 15:19

About to do it again I believe. They said there is a 75% chance of it happening, I don’t this will change anything.

          • The Original Just Me September 26th, 2015 at 00:06

One more time. I just wish they would do it closer to next years election.

            • Suzanne McFly September 26th, 2015 at 17:21

I wish people would just remember and realize their voting in support of this type of government.

  2. allison1050 September 25th, 2015 at 09:49

Then he’ll be able to work on a real tan and give up the spray stuff.

  4. Stan Ubeki September 25th, 2015 at 09:56

Seriously, who will fill that position? It’s frightening to think about. McConnell?

    • disqus_Va4LwroE3I September 25th, 2015 at 10:01

      McConnell? McConnell who?

    • allison1050 September 25th, 2015 at 10:02

        • allison1050 September 25th, 2015 at 10:05

I just got back from The Gray Lady and they wrote that he had a private audience with the Pope…I bet he did a confession.

          • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 12:09

OR got a warning. Don’t Piss off The Pope.

        • mea_mark September 25th, 2015 at 10:22

More than likely. They have been grooming him for the position since Cantor got the boot in the primaries.

  5. Obewon September 25th, 2015 at 09:58

Either Boehner has been granted a divorce to marry his lobbyist girlfriend, or he’s been implicated in another (R) Denny ‘call me coach’ Hastert Duggaring scandal.
    Boehner / Hastert’16~

  6. allison1050 September 25th, 2015 at 10:07

I love that he’s sticking to the House repuks by resigning at the end of October! Talk about a hot mess! The baggers wanted him gone so what a heck of a time for him to leave.

    • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 12:07

His bar Tab is being cut off at the end of the month.

  7. arc99 September 25th, 2015 at 10:24

When the going gets tough, tough Republicans pull a Sarah Palin.

Who is even going to want the job of Speaker? As I read the Constitution, nothing in it says that the Speaker of the House must be a sitting member. I say they should bring back Newt Gingrich. Can’t stand his politics. But like Pelosi, Tip O Neill and the legendary Sam Rayburn, Gingrich at least knew how to do the job of Speaker.

    • mea_mark September 25th, 2015 at 10:27

I wonder how long before tRump says he wants the job?

      • whatthe46 September 25th, 2015 at 10:40

        jinx! don’t do that again.

    • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 12:06

Only if the Pages were young and cute.

  8. William September 25th, 2015 at 10:24

    Let’s review kids.
The right wing zealots and baggers are upset because Boehner wouldn’t withhold funds for an agency that cannot and does not use public money for abortions…… because they don’t like abortions.
This just in. Mitch McConnell forced to step down because he won’t defund acorn.
*sigh* cleaning out all those Boehner memes.
    Hey Republicans. You built this.

    • Dwendt44 September 25th, 2015 at 11:46

Adios mofo (thanks again Ricky for the phrase). Gotta wonder though, why resign both the Speaker’s post AND his congressional seat? Seems odd, no? His replacement is likely to be worse. I’ll miss the tears streaming down his orange cheeks.

    • maggie September 25th, 2015 at 12:44

it’s rumored that McCarthy is the “heir apparent”

  12. rg9rts September 25th, 2015 at 10:56

    • dave-dr-gonzo September 25th, 2015 at 11:15

He should team up with Jackson Galaxy for a new reality series: “Herding Teacats.” Sponsored by Orange-Glo, natch.

    • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 12:00

Gave up herding Laughed at Hyenas and went to herding cats. Yup, he took the easy out.

  13. MBJR September 25th, 2015 at 11:38

  14. alpacadaddy September 25th, 2015 at 11:55

Speaker “Cryin’ SlimJim” Boehner is just getting of the tracks before the GOP-Tealinquent train wreck occurs at Obstruction-Dysfunction Junction! (with Gohmert as Conductor, and Ernst as Engineer!!!)

  15. maggie September 25th, 2015 at 12:08

omg Boehner realizes life long dream of having pope address congress….cries like a baby and then resigns and speaker and resigns the house, that’s the catholic news…meanwhile muslims stampede each other to death in mecca pilgrimage in the ME on the same day…life is certainly stranger than fiction….;O

    • rg9rts September 25th, 2015 at 12:33

The stampedes happen every year…only the number changes… poor crowd control and they never seem to learn how….It will be interesting to see who wants to take the speakers position …The conservatives may just have committed suicide .

      • maggie September 25th, 2015 at 12:38

I know…what is it about religious people that they must kill each other to prove that they are more pious than their “brother”….does that make sense…? Maybe God has a plan after all ;O mystifying isn’t it?

        • rg9rts September 25th, 2015 at 14:20

My god is better than your god…at least She has a sense of humor

How can I be Soooo Happy and Soooo Sacred at the same time. At least he will be missed in Washington. His bar tender will be so unhappy and lonely.

    • mea_mark September 25th, 2015 at 12:30

The Gop is dying (happy), problem is sometimes dyeing things thrash about a lot and hurt everything around them (scary).

      • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 12:40

I will give Boehner credit for one thing. He might not have accomplished any significant things as Speaker but he was able to maintain some control and at least keep the NAZI Party at bay, and to prevent them from taking total control of OUR Congress. I am really scared of what will happen next in OUR House of Representatives. The House is supposed to represent the peoples of the United States. Now, instead, it’s leadership will Represent our Worst Enemy.

        • maggie September 25th, 2015 at 12:43

McCarthy is suppose to be the “heir apparent” rumor has it….

          • The Original Just Me September 25th, 2015 at 13:18

Hum, McCarthy, McCarthy. I’ve heard that name before. Oh Yea, That was that name of the Sen. that held the McCarthy Hearings in the early fifties. His NAZI Witch Hunt against the Communists. Remember, Communist Russia was a member of the Allies in WW II and was our strongest ally in defeating Germany. I wonder if there is any relation or connection there between these two McCarthy’s ?

            • maggie September 25th, 2015 at 13:21

yeah only this guy is from california, hates the environment and raised a ton of money to help get republicans in congress…BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE.!…embezzlement and prison followed for their treasurer…..;)

              • The Original Just Me September 26th, 2015 at 00:02

Sounds like there might be a family link.

    • Roctuna September 25th, 2015 at 12:47

As a lobbyist ol’ boner will be buying more drinks than ever.

      • The Original Just Me September 26th, 2015 at 01:33

I kind of think he is going to go home and stay there for awhile. His yellowish skin and heavy drinking lead me to think maybe he has liver problems but who am I to know these things.

  17. maggie September 25th, 2015 at 12:41

ITS OK PEOPLE GOD HAS A PLAN AFTER ALL….;O

  18. Willys41 September 26th, 2015 at 00:49

November 2016 just got a whole lot brighter.

  19. bpollen September 26th, 2015 at 04:35

    All Boners go down eventually.

  20. liberalMD September 26th, 2015 at 08:19

Well it looks like the House is going to make a sharp right turn, as that is what the Republican Party is here in California. The Republicans can’t get anyone elected to a statewide office and the only reason that there are Republican members in the House from California is because the district lines are incredibly gerrymandered.
