Report: Fiorina Violated Iran Sanctions At HP

Posted by | September 20, 2015 19:37 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Carly Fiorina’s Hewlett Packard made millions of dollars selling products to Iran through a foreign subsidiary, violating a U.S. ban on such sales.

Fiorina, who served as chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005, often criticizes President Obama’s deal with Iran on the basis that he is agreeing to sanctions relief for Iran too quickly and in exchange for paltry concessions on the part of Tehran. In April, she said Iran sanctions were “unraveling fast,” something she called a “dangerous development.”

Fiorina often cites her time as a corporate executive as a credential for running for president and said in July she would back away from the Iran deal if elected and renegotiate. She has also warned that European countries, as well as Russia and China, are rushing “to open the Iranian economy.” She has also accused Iran of cheating on sanctions.

What Fiorina never mentions on the stump is that while she was in charge, Hewlett-Packard used a European subsidiary and a Middle East distributor to sell hundreds of millions of dollars of printers and other computer equipment to Iran.

HP’s unusual omnipresence inside Iran was first reported in 2008 by the Boston Globe, which discovered that in 1997 the company struck up a partnership with a new Indian company in Dubai called Redington Gulf. The partnership was so successful distributing in Iran that HP printers were No. 1 there, with 41 percent of the market share by 2007.

All U.S. companies were banned from exporting to Iran in 1995, when President Bill Clinton issued two executive orders tightening sanctions on Iran in response to Iran’s support for international terrorism and pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. If HP executives knew about what the Dubai-based distributor was doing, they would have been breaking U.S. law.

Fiorina denied any knowledge of this during her failed California Senate run, and her presidential campaign has not yet responded to Bloomberg’s Josh Rogan who wrote the story.

  3. amersham46 September 20th, 2015 at 20:21

And what is the issue , Halliburton et al have been doing it for years

  4. Roctuna September 20th, 2015 at 21:15

If HP execs knew? Believe me, they knew everything there was to know about a distributor that was moving hundreds of millions of dollars of product. I guess HP stood for hyper patriotic eh?

    • DogsRgoodpeople September 21st, 2015 at 01:02

41% of market of the entire country of Iran ? Oh yeah, everybody that was anybody inside HP surely got wind of that.

      • whatthe46 September 21st, 2015 at 01:25

that’s absolutely true. but hey, emails.

And I heard that when she found out about what happened she ended it quickly. I would rather see her as the President than another politician whose only job has been working for the government. Working for the government is sort of like working in academia – you end up in ether place when you can’t make it in the world of private business.

    • whatthe46 September 20th, 2015 at 22:13

      you poor sheep.

    • Kick Frenzy September 20th, 2015 at 23:58

The only track record she has is failing at both HP and Lucent.
Unless you count the possibility that she knew about illegally selling products to Iran.

While many career politicians may have become numb to the world outside of their offices and official meeting places, there is some worth in having experience at a job that you’re applying for.

      Have you considered Bernie Sanders?
Sure, he’s been a politician for decades, but he’s held to the same principles for half a century.
At no time during any of his elected positions did he change course or succumb to corporate/lobbyist interests and he won’t start now.
In many ways, he is one of the people… even though he’s been in office for so long.

Plus, Bernie has THE BEST hair. :)

If it was the case that “when she found about about what happened, she ended it quickly,” I’d like to know two things. One, why did she deny having knowledge about the HP sales to Iran when she ran for the Senate in CA and was asked about it, and two, why hasn’t someone from her campaign come forward and issued a statement to Bloomberg about the matter ? If she has nothing to hide and “responded quickly,” as you claim, why is she remaining silent?

    • Gindy51 September 21st, 2015 at 06:43

Then why hasn’t she been shouting this from the roof tops as a big achievement during her tenure as CEO? Why? Because she DID NOT stop it.

  6. Warman1138 September 20th, 2015 at 23:21

I wonder how much HP equipment ended up in their nuclear program? Just saying…..

  7. majii September 21st, 2015 at 01:55

She won’t respond, and none of her supporters will give a d*mn since they’re experts at ignoring facts and reality. H*ll, they know history shows that presidents who came from the business community have made lousy presidents, but they don’t care. They like what they like, and that’s enough for them. Shallow b*st*rds.

Cheneys Haliburton sells them the nuke hardware tech, and Scary Poppins and her company sells them the computer stuff.
    Sweet.

Why would anyone expect a corporate executive and a republican to obey the law? Are you out of your mind? Everybody knows that republicans are above the law. Give them two minutes and they’ll tell you that the only “law” that matters is their own perverted version of “christian” law.
