Clock-Making Teen’s Rights Violated During Arrest

Posted by | September 18, 2015 19:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly

Ahmed Mohamed was repeatedly denied the right to call his parents during his arrest.

The law is clear: Juveniles in Texas may have a parent, guardian, or attorney present during interrogation. Mohamed was repeatedly denied this request…

“A child may not be left unattended in a juvenile processing office and is entitled to be accompanied by the child’s parent, guardian, or other custodian or by the child’s attorney,” Section 52.025 (PDF) states.

Mohamed did not see his parents until he was released from a juvenile detention center, according to police and his family.

Furthermore, a “person taking a child into custody shall promptly give notice of the person’s action and a statement of the reason for taking the child into custody, to the child’s parent, guardian, or custodian.”

A person of color has no rights in Texas

    • Larry Schmitt September 18th, 2015 at 19:42

Is it possible to have less than no rights? After all, he’s a Muslim.

  4. Larry Schmitt September 18th, 2015 at 19:41

Aside from the fact that he didn’t commit a crime.

Any ambulance lawyer would love to take this one on.

nope, the taxpayers of Irving will take it in the shorts on this one. but it won’t deter anyone from doing it again as it isn’t their money.

I agree wholeheartedly yet every time I suggest it should be coming from their pension fund I catch flack about punishing the good ones. I’m pretty sure it would provide sufficient motivation for the good ones to actually speak up and do good.

I am with you 100% Carla. In school, when someone on the team I was on screwed up, we all took responsibility for the screw-up and we all suffered the consequences. The resulting peer pressure not to do it again was more intense than any threat of incarceration, IMO.

Don’t expect any heartfelt apology to be forthcoming.

We’re dealing with yet another police department which believes that the police motto should be:
“To serve and to protect … our own self-interests.”

Texas again? I feel like we were talking about this place like a few days ago or a week ago? Oh right Trump was down there rallying the rightwing Klan party.

There are no rights for minorities in this country because they make sure they do not know their rights , so we get f*cked over every time!

I’m surprised no enhanced techniques weren’t employed. They’d have gotten their “broader context” out of him sooner or later.
