Vet Denied Pain Pills After Testing Positive For Pot

The disabled Vietnam veteran is suffering from stage four lung cancer, but he’s being refused pain management because he tested positive for marijuana.

“I went in to get a refill on my pain medication and they refused to let me have it, because I have marijuana in my blood,” Gary Dixon, Vietnam veteran.

Gary Dixon is a 65-year-old disabled Vietnam veteran. While in Vietnam he was exposed to Agent Orange.

“I hurt, and I hurt from something I got fighting for my country,” says Dixon.

Now he’s got stage four lung cancer, doesn’t have much time left to live and readily admits to smoking marijuana.

Tuesday morning Dixon and his wife Debbie drove up to Topeka from Fort Scott like they always do for Dixon’s stroke group therapy and to pick up his pain medicine. But this time his visit went different. He had to take a urine test and sign an opiate consent form.

“I said, ‘if she was wanting to see if I still smoke marijuana, I said I do’,” Dixon says.

That doesn’t even begin to make sense. Stage 4 and in pain…give him what ever he wants.

It all started with his giving consent…
I caution everyone to get a lawyers opinion before ever signing any consent forms and to always film your interactions with police or government officials.
The SCOTUS has ruled that police are not there to protect you but rather to enforce the law. When you’re stopped, it is because the police think you have broken the law. The same is true with consent forms…it’s not for your protection (they wouldn’t need consent for that) it’s for their protection so when they deny you care or medication they have a reason.

If they were allowed to take a random urine sample they would not have needed his consent…never consent to anything you don’t absolutely have to…

At age 63, I find it is less and less frequent that I come across advice that I had not already heard before, and will find particularly useful. Your advice fits the bill.

I will definitely keep in mind your caveats about consent forms. Thanks for the tip.

LOL like marriage.. you learned the law well LOL

      • Mike September 13th, 2015 at 16:30

Marriage is a contract…I was stupid on a whole different level…I entered into a contract with a lawyer, it’s like making a deal with the devil

        • rg9rts September 13th, 2015 at 16:39

LOL I was that stupid too…twice…

If you don’t sign the consent form, you will not be given pain meds.

      • Mike September 13th, 2015 at 16:45

Not true…by his own testimony he was receiving meds for years until he was “requested” to supply a sample. If the sample were mandatory there would be no need to sign a consent form.

This is not a privilege like driving, where if you refuse it is considered an admission of guilt. A veteran has a right to proper medical care which are clearly stated on the Dept of VA Homepage.

“You will be treated..consistent with Federal law…”

Federal law allows for the dispensing of pain meds without a prior drug screen…or we would be getting a sample from everyone who hit the pharmacy at Walgreen’s

I am in this same pain management program at the VA and am quite aware of the restrictions. It doesn’t speak of “prior” drug screens. If you don’t sign the consent form, agreeing to random drug screens…you will not be prescribed the pain meds…period. Do you have a different personal experience?

          • Mike September 13th, 2015 at 19:47

Yes, maybe because I’m not on a pain meds program and only need them occasionally. No one has ever asked me to submit to a urinalysis.
I was wounded in 68 and have been going to the Palm Beach County facility for 15 years…before that Anchorage Alaska for 17 years.

In the last 9 months I have had to take 5 surprise drug tests with a 24 hours notice. Last one was yesterday. Medical marijuana is also legal here in Arizona. If it shows up on the test, I am denied pain meds. I also have to miss work to make the tests.

The way they treat our Veterans in this country is appalling, how are you going to treat people willing to give their LIVES for our freedom and deny someone with a horrible sickness medication? Unbelievable!!

    • rg9rts September 13th, 2015 at 16:24

We are used to it …after 40 years

      • Tommie September 13th, 2015 at 18:45

Well, it should not be that way, my father was in the military and i have always respected the Veterans, THANKS FOR SERVICE!!

Health care practicioners, insurance companies, DEA, have abandoned patients with chronic illness….that is people who have chronic illnesses and get some return of being able to function in life with appropriate medication prescribed or not…..the health care industry is giving the moral high ground to the those who provide medication outside the law….even when doctors prescribe….patients can’t get medications due to harassment of Pharmacies (by putting caps on amounts) by the DEA about how much medication they can deliver …so seniors, disabled people, people with chronic illnesses can’t get their medications to stay functional….or just to have relief….on top of that you have the massive push by gov to say that the minority of people addicted are the equivalent to people who are not addicted….people who just need medication for the rest of their lives…also those that do have addiction problems would not be addicted if they had access to quality medical care…medical care that seeks to restore health rather than do nothing….then those small amount that are addicted are sent to contractors that are raking it in hand over fist from the gov…but doing little to nothing to help patients….sending them back into the cycle….the answer clearly is to give people rational health care…stop blaming patients for illnesses..if religion cured illness no one would be sick…..but it’s really about money…the MIPR is a domestic terrorist organization…..and the DEA has never been to medical school….boycott the doctors..they just perpetuate the dysfunction and do nothing to heal or help patients.

    • rg9rts September 13th, 2015 at 16:23

Maggie …they don’t care,,,never have…the gov and Monsanto had to be shamed into even admitting that agent orange was toxic and then foot dragging became the norm in the hopes we would die off. Pain relief for stage 4 government sponsored cancer NEVER

  6. rg9rts September 13th, 2015 at 16:20

Kansas …Brownback should suffer it too Karma

  7. Tommie September 13th, 2015 at 18:43

Isn’t that a shame? Yet they are the first ones to say that the left hates the military!

There are billboards in my community near the local VA hospital that read “The VA is lying, vets are dying.” While the statement is true, the reason why the VA is failing vets is because REPUBLICANS don’t want to pay their bills! Create a million new injured vets, and cut funding for the organization responsible for caring for those vets. But THAT hypocrisy isn’t quite reprehensible enough… they then use the failings that they create to push to “privatize” (commercialize is more like it) vet care.
