Obama Labor Day: Obama Signs Paid Sick Leave Law

Posted by | September 7, 2015 22:00 | Filed under: Good News Politics

Firms doing business with the federal government must now offer employees paid sick leave.

The new rule will go into effect in 2017 and is limited to seven days of paid sick leave, reports The Washington Post.

President Obama’s Labor Day announcement will likely benefit about American 300,000 workers, according to the White House.

The new sick paid rule will probably have the greatest effect on low-wage workers, who normally do not get that type of benefit, reports CNN.

However, the executive order will not affect workers in private employment; that would take an act of Congress, and Republicans have historically opposed paid sick leave.

Probably make for a more harmonious workplace, though.

What have the republicans done lately?

After Lincoln, they’ve been in a looooooong death spiral…

Eisenhower leveled out and Nixon was actually a good President . He was just a lousy person.

        • bpollen September 8th, 2015 at 00:56

I lived through that time period. Sure didn’t seem like a good president to ME. Vietnam, Kent State, Watergate, Spiro Agnew, first Vice-President to resign in disgrace (tax evasion he pled guilty to in exchange for the political corruption charge being dismissed,) crappy economy, the extra-legal invasion of Cambodia, Bebe Rebozo (remember him?), the 1973 oil crisis, the DEA (can you say failed war on drugs?). the bombing of Laos, help in the overthrow that put Allende into power and supported him after, his feuding with Jack Anderson and siccing the CIA on him (against the CIA charter,) illegal wiretapping…

But, he did do some GOOD things… EPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, OSHA, Endangered Species act, SALT Treaty, 26th Amendment… Strangely enough, almost ALL of them are things current R(acists) are very much against.

True many bad things happened while he was in office. Most of them were tied to Watergate which was his personality caused problem, hence, Lousy person. All Republican presidents have put us into recessions, except Depression Hover. That goes with having a Republican in the Oval office. But adding to your list of favorable items, he got us out of Vietnam, and opened the door to China, Now, some folks might argue if opening China was a good thing or not, but we haven’t gone to war with them. I see the executive side of him as some what good. but the personal side of him as, Well, Nixon. Nixon was the last Republican that was his own man, The Republican Presidents we have had since are only front men for the committee. I give Nixon a C Grade. Not good but better than what we have had as Republicans since.

There HAVE been worse Bushes in the White House… and John Adams (criminalized his opponent’s political campaign) and James Buchanan (pro-slavery a central tenet of his administration – also Dred Scot is from his presidency) and Millard Fillmore (Fugitive Slave Act) and Andrew Jackson (Manifest Destiny and Trail of Tears.)

I have shaken the hand of one, count’em, one president and he is one of the worst – thank you Tricky Dick.

I admired John Adams because, even thou he was a political foe of Thomas Jefferson, they were very close friends. I generally only go back a hundred years on Presidents because things change greatly after the Civil War and with the Industrial Revolution. I really love reading about one Republican President, Teddy Roosevelt. Now he as a Real American. I guess that is why he got drummed out of his own Party. I saw Nixon one time in a Parade in Salt lake City. I had a chance to see Reagan and Bush Sr. but I passed on both. I was raised in a Republican home but went Democrat under Kennedy. LBJ sent me out into the Independent Wilderness. I did try the Democrats again in the 80’s when I ran for a state office. Do to my differences with how he party was being run, I left and became a Independent again. So, I just wonder around looking at weird things.

Mixed feelings here. Most of the fast food joints will have to close on Saturday because the burger flippers will be hung over.

    • BigDumbWhiteGuy September 8th, 2015 at 04:42

This only effects employees that have jobs as a result of a contract with the federal government. Though there are plenty of choke ‘n puke establishments on military bases, I’m not sure if this covers them.

      • rg9rts September 8th, 2015 at 05:07

        They are contract operations

      • The Original Just Me September 8th, 2015 at 10:44

As I said, I have mixed feelings about this. Sick pay is a generous offer by the employer but it is miss used way too much. I just wish the employers would treat the workers like human beings the way they used to. The world has changed.

    • rg9rts September 8th, 2015 at 05:07

      They are hungover already.

  5. rg9rts September 8th, 2015 at 05:06

OMG!!!!!! What next????? Paid vacation???? The world will end and capitalism will fail …

  6. Suzanne McFly September 8th, 2015 at 07:00

“Republicans have historically opposed paid sick leave”….And that is why rumpster is kicking your asses.

  7. David B Teague September 8th, 2015 at 18:14

While this action has the force of law, this is an EXECUTIVE ORDER. it is *NOT* a “congress passed bill that he signed”. The wording of the headline should be changed.

    • whatthe46 September 8th, 2015 at 18:35

is thats what’s bothering you? semantics?

  8. maggie September 10th, 2015 at 00:24

GO OBAMA…eating out when the food prep people are sick is a recipe for disaster…..and republicans take paid sick leave and holidays…why shouldn’t american workers get the same?
