Man Shoots Himself In The Head While Bragging About Gun Safety

Posted by | September 7, 2015 10:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly

The Phoenix man pointed the gun at his head to show how effective the double safety feature was, then pulled the trigger.

23-year-old Christen Reece was out drinking and after he bars closed at around 3 or 3:00 in the morning, he had a bright idea which he presented to his six friends: “Let’s go to the high country and shoot guns,” he said.

“You know, there’s not really a lot to the story other than don’t drink and shoot guns,” explains Jim Molesa, chief deputy of the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, which is conducting the official investigation, according to the Phoenix New Times.

The friends ended up on the side of the road near a wooded area to do a little target shooting.

Reece told his friends of the feature on his gun which had a double-safety making it impossible to ever go off unexpectedly, so he decided to demonstrate this for his buddies.

“He held the gun up to head, a little behind the temple area, and fired,” Molesa said of the Sept 2nd incident. “He immediately dropped to the ground, and his acquaintances started freaking out, not sure what to do.”

Reece’s friends panicked. There was no hospital nearby, so they took his unconscious and bloody body to the fire station, where paramedics were on duty.

Reece’s friends took off. Police have identified two of them but are hoping to find the others to interview them, the Phoenix New Times reports.

NRA marksman of the month…hands down

  2. Larry Schmitt September 7th, 2015 at 10:39

He was 100% correct. The precious gun was not harmed.

  3. Mike September 7th, 2015 at 10:40

And he was a Christen too…:)
The good news of course is that the gun is safe and unharmed…

  4. Larry Schmitt September 7th, 2015 at 10:43

From the original news story: “Molesa said, “The main thing any teacher of a gun-safety class wants students to walk away is that you should treat every gun as if it’s loaded and never point it at yourself or anyone else.”
Then where’s the fun of owning a gun in the first place if you can’t point it at someone? What a spoil sport.

Guns are designed for killing people. Even with the two safeties. And this poor guy just proved it.

Is it to late to enter this for the Darwin Awards? Here is a tragic story locally from last year.

The guy or the girl…??? or both…???
      Tragic, yes
We treat guns with such indifference in this country, stories like this happen twice a day. Last year 728 people killed themselves by accident.

      • wpadon September 7th, 2015 at 13:16

In the local story I posted, I was referring to the dead gun owner, although I do feel sorry for the woman who pulled the trigger. She trusted her cousin’s judgement to pull the trigger. She never had the benefit of a gun safety class to tell her to treat all guns as if they were loaded. Now they call her killer.

        • Mike September 7th, 2015 at 13:27

I certainly feel for the girl…but…
Have you ever held sodium cyanide in your hand…?? probably not (you’d remember, trust me) but you know it will kill you dead in a matter of seconds. So fooling around with it and putting a little in your friends beer might be a bit reckless, maybe even criminal since you know we used to stuff in gas chambers…a gun is not a toy, and anyone who points one at another human being knows that death is possible…with or without safety training…she pulled the trigger…why…???

Really? In today’s age , with all the new stories available, you have to be told in a gun safety course to not point a gun at someone and pull the trigger? No you don’t. There are things that an adult should know not to do.

There is no such thing as “accidental shootings “

        • Par4thecourse September 8th, 2015 at 11:58

The end finding to lessen the seriousness might be accident.. however , it is always Serious when a gun is fired… it should be Negligence.. Someone had to be negligent or deliberate for a weapon to fire. I agree with you…

      Greetings fellow Yinzer!

I cannot figure out that story — so many people, all drunk, passing around a gun — stupid on so many levels!

” Hey, watch me take a selfie with my gun. ” BANG! THUMP! ” Don’t worry, it’s got a safety switch. ” BANG! THUMP! ” No problem, I was trained. ” BANG! THUMP! ” Hey, I saw this in the movies. ” BANG! THUMP! ” It’s allright if the kid plays with it. I’m sure it’s unloaded. ” BANG! THUMP! The last sounds morons with more guns than brains ever hear. BANG! and THUMP!

Seems to be the third incident of this kind that I have heard this week. Evolution is hard at work.

What’s the most common epitaph used on American cemetery headstones?

“Hey, hold my beer. Now watch this….”

      Bubba’s famous last words

I’m guessing that the last words on most flight recorders recovered from plane crashes is “Oh, shit!”

  17. Sy Colepath September 7th, 2015 at 19:41

Hope he gets a chance to never do that again.

I love Ammosexual stories that start with “Now watch this! “

Respect the gun, and when you’re drunk ,respect it more.

Culling the herd one idiot at a time. It’s slow but still entertaining.
