So when will he be found in contempt, and tossed in a cell? He won’t be, because he’s a judge, and if he were found in contempt, he would cave, because he wouldn’t want to lose his cushy lifestyle. The law is not applied equally. If it were, some circuit judge would charge him with something.

Eugene Volokh (the “Volokh Conspiracy” blog at WaPo) had a very good discussion of this issue. And while I generally disagree with Volokh’s Upper Middle-Class White-Privileged Libertarianism, as a non-lawyer I can’t imagine anyone better clarifying at the nuances of Constitutional Law. He points out that under the federal RFRA and the religious accommodations portion of Title VII, employees can be exempted from performing duties that offend their religious beliefs PROVIDED the exemption doesn’t create an undue hardship for the government or private employer AND for the customers.
So Muslim truckers who don’t want to haul alcohol can get an exemption, provided the boss has another trucker available for that route; observant Jews who don’t want to work Shomer Shabbos! can be excused provided another employee can cover their shift without undue burden. So while I think this judge is a jerk, I don’t think he’s in the same league as Kim Davis, since there are obviously other judges available who can perform the ceremonies without undue hardship to the couples, assuming the case-loads of the other judges can be shifted to this knucklehead accordingly.

My advice to public sector Christian conservatives who deem that their warped interpretation of Biblical law trumps Constitutional law and therefore cannot stomach the recent decisions of the SCOTUS — quit your taxpayer-funded jobs, scurry on home, lock the doors, pull the blinds, and never come out again.

In his case I would prefer to see fining him until he complies with the law.
1st day could equal $100. Second day could equal $200. Third day $300.
I like this over jail because it could add up to some serious money and I will bet he has used this law against some evil doer himself. If you jail him you just make a martyr of him.

But for someone in his position, jail is a lot more painful. He could always find some sympathetic headline-hungry noisemaker who would be willing to pay him for any fines. But actually going to jail would seriously hurt his dignity.

The burning bush was Old Testament. It was how god appeared to Moses since he was too awesome for Moses to look at directly. As for relics, if all the pieces of the “True Cross” and vials of “the blood of Christ” were real, the cross would be as big as the Empire State Building, and Jesus would be ten times the size of Goliath. But throughout the Middle Ages, priests and bishops and other hucksters sold these relics to gullible knights to convince them to go on crusades.

When I read her Google entry, it said “she ran as a Democrat” in the general election last year when the county clerk retired. That doesn’t sound like she’s a Democrat philosophically or any other way. And her actions don’t indicate that either. Very few members of the Apostolic Church are Democrats.
