Because “they don’t want to”

Republican economics has been stated a thousand ways by a thousand (always paid) voices. But the basic idea behind all the schemes has been hard to pin down. Finally Republican front-runner Donald Trump has spelled it out in a way anyone can understand. Thursday’s Progressive Breakfast (you should subscribe, it’s free, it’s really good) contains a…

Sounds like what we really need is a world taxing authority for multinational corporations. Get them to pay taxes wherever they are and use the money to clean up the environment that everybody in the world benefits from.

    • Mike August 21st, 2015 at 15:27

Or we could just ban them from selling in the US…like we did to Cadbury.
We force many car and truck companies to manufacture here by limiting the number of imports, why not do the same to Big Pharma or companies who want to relocate for a better tax deal.???

      • mea_mark August 21st, 2015 at 15:35

We could. I think a balance between the two would probably work the best and help us fix the environment,

      • rg9rts August 22nd, 2015 at 08:09

Like GM?? You heard that they want to build Buicks in China for US export?

        • Mike August 22nd, 2015 at 11:22

Exactly…we allow these companies to circumvent our tax system by moving production to exploit some cheap labor market then ship the product here to be sold…the fix is really a no brainer

          • rg9rts August 22nd, 2015 at 11:31

Wasn’t that Mittwitts contribution to the American economy???? Outsourcing??? Bains mainstay?

    • fahvel August 22nd, 2015 at 03:25

sophisticate that idea and you may resolve all the problems in the world created by the once selfish mofo corps and sarls.

How about we stop allowing Pfizer from selling their product in the US…???

If we can stop Cadbury from selling it’s chocolate because it’s made in the UK, the same should apply to Pfizer…

Go for it but they can’t use our air space, roads, internet, phones, banks, hospitals, police, fire dept, etc and they can’t hire anyone who was educated in a state education system.

The real moochers are people like Trump and the multinationals…want all the benefits that government gives them, ie: keeping shipping lanes free from pirates (for the most part), but don’t want to ante up.

  5. azeyote August 21st, 2015 at 17:22

Dave Johnson – “They have $2.5 trillion sitting out of the country that they can’t get back because they don’t want to pay the tax. Nor would I ” – really you wouldn’t help out your country out by doing the right thing? – even after you became stinkin fu#kin rich along the way – probably hate the minimum wage too…..

    • Mike August 21st, 2015 at 20:50

Newsflash: You don’t become a billionaire by doing the right thing…that’s why you and I are in a chatroom and not sunning on the French Riviera…

      • fahvel August 22nd, 2015 at 03:23

I know a small lovely strip of beach on the Riviera where you would be welcome and it’s only 24 euros per day. C’mon over

        • bpollen August 22nd, 2015 at 04:10

The closest I have come to visiting the Riviera is riding in a Buick Riviera.

Watch out I just might take you up on that…I spend about 2 months a year in Germany. I love France…the food, people, scenery, and ease of travel (you never need a car) My German is pretty good but my French is weak, otherwise I’d probably spend more time there also.

corporations don’t vote….I think we should all honor the 50th anniversary of the voter rights act by registering people to vote and taking people to the polls if they need a ride ;)

  9. Tommie August 22nd, 2015 at 00:22

I think all that money they make they should but those that keep jobs in America and hire Americans should get a tax break! IMO!

    • rg9rts August 22nd, 2015 at 08:04

How about GM building Buicks in China for export to the US

      • amongoose August 24th, 2015 at 11:10

I’ll never buy one, will you?
Rather pay a bit more and have my neighbor with a good job that can afford to buy what they make.

        • rg9rts August 24th, 2015 at 11:20

How about a Mercedes from Alabama ???

          • amongoose August 24th, 2015 at 11:39

If I could afford one – Oh Hell Yeah.

            • rg9rts August 24th, 2015 at 12:05

Alabama police arrested the director of the plant for being a suspected illegal

              • amongoose August 24th, 2015 at 12:51

Good, replace him with an American.

                • rg9rts August 24th, 2015 at 13:19

He might take the plant with him so much for the Alabama alien crackdown….almost an international incident

                  • amongoose August 24th, 2015 at 13:30

Been four years since he was arrested, and the plant is still there.
                    Unless there is another one.
This is all google could find.

                    http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2011/11/21/373334/german-mercedes-benz-executive-arrested-under-alabamas-immigration-law/

If this is it he failed to convert a travel (on business) to a work visa after being assigned there.
A little different than illegally crossing the border.

                    • rg9rts August 24th, 2015 at 13:49

I think Alabama got out of the alien business….something about the feds putting their foot down..

                    • amongoose August 24th, 2015 at 14:53

They we were sued for “enforcing federal immigration law” in July of 2011, and forced to stop arresting illegals.
So why is it not good for them to enforce federal law, but sanctuary cities are not allowed for openly defy immigration law?
Seems that if they are so protective of their “exclusive right” to enforce that they would make sure everyone obeyed their law.

    • amongoose August 23rd, 2015 at 14:22

Or maybe an import fee equal to the cost of manufacturing difference in worker pay, safety costs, environmental and other govt. regulations.
Make them come up to our standards.
These companies go over there because it costs less and fewer costly regulations.
If the playing field were fair instead of open those CEO’s would have incentive to keep jobs here. And bring back the profits they are hiding overseas.

      • Tommie August 23rd, 2015 at 15:09

I think because of greed even if what you said would happened they would continue to do the same thing!

        • amongoose August 24th, 2015 at 11:09

Actually greed is a factor to help it, stockholder, investor, and corporate.
Stockholders are a powerful force, a quarter of lower returns due to “manufacturing equalization fees”, which are allowed by WTO rules, would make those dividend checks go down a lot.
And that would start a revolt.
          .
If the only way to avoid a chunk of those taxes would be to manufacture here they would.
It would also give American startups the chance to start up on a level playing field, and pay Americans American level wages.
The tax code isn’t about revenue, it is about “prodding” people to do what you want.

  10. rg9rts August 22nd, 2015 at 08:04

    Now THAT is gopee thinking

  11. Budda August 22nd, 2015 at 08:57

What load of BS. Corps. don’t pay taxes now for crying out loud!

    • amongoose August 23rd, 2015 at 14:22

And the taxes they do pay are passed on to the consumer as a cost of doing business.

  12. William August 23rd, 2015 at 14:55

Gosh, I’m really impressed by Trumps vision of this Utopia he has planned for us.
