Iran Hearings Show Republicans Not Fit to Lead

Taegan Goddard links to at William Saletan at Slate:

If Republicans win the White House next year, they’ll almost certainly control the entire federal government. Many of them, running for president or aspiring to leadership roles in Congress, are trying to block the nuclear deal with Iran. This would be a good time for these leaders to show that they’re ready for the responsibilities of national security and foreign policy. Instead, they’re showing the opposite. Over the past several days, congressional hearings on the deal have become a spectacle of dishonesty, incomprehension, and inability to cope with the challenges of a multilateral world.

When the hearings began more than a week ago, I was planning to write about the testimony of Secretary of State John Kerry and Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. But the more I watched, the more I saw that the danger in the room wasn’t coming from the deal or its administration proponents. It was coming from the interrogators. In challenging Kerry and Moniz, Republican senators and representatives offered no serious alternative. They misrepresented testimony, dismissed contrary evidence, and substituted vitriol for analysis. They seemed baffled by the idea of having to work and negotiate with other countries. I came away from the hearings dismayed by what the GOP has become in the Obama era. It seems utterly unprepared to govern.

War, it is what the gop wants, the teabaggers want to destroy Iran then N.Korea and institute xtian style sharia law in our country. GLBT and women will be regulated on how, who what they love, the poor will be killed by taking away all help ie food assistance, scholarships, work training and education.

    • whatthe46 August 1st, 2015 at 20:27

“the poor will be killed by taking away all help ie food assistance,…”

and then there’s Kansas: “The war on poverty is in full swing in Kansas. The state is pushing forward with a plan to limit ATM withdrawals to $25 and charging $1 for regular transactions to all welfare recipients.”

      • tracey marie August 1st, 2015 at 20:33

It is done, and it is more then $1. that is what the admistration charges for getting money plus all ATM fees come out of that $25. To make it worse they charge an extra .50 if they pull out cash. How are they supposed to grocery shop with maybe $21.?

          So where’s the ACLU?

          • tracey marie August 1st, 2015 at 20:57

            Fighting this, many people are.

            • allison1050 August 2nd, 2015 at 05:43

              So glad to hear that.

“Kansas currently received around $102 million per year from the federal government to distribute to needy families. The new law may put that funding at risk if the federal government determines that they are violating federal laws.”

        • whatthe46 August 1st, 2015 at 20:42

“A loophole was quickly discovered in the bill. Welfare recipients are eligible to withdraw their money through two cashback transactions per month. If they go over that limit, they will be charged $0.40 per additional transaction.”
how are they suppose to do anything with 21 bucks? these assholes are just so disgusting.

        • whatthe46 August 1st, 2015 at 21:10

what’s even worse when you think about it tracey, is that, the ATM machines won’t let you withdraw $25. which means, they withdraw 20 and are left with about $16.00 after all is said and done.

In addition, KS just raised their sales tax to cover Brownbackward’s budget and they tax food – depending on the on the municipality it’s somewhere between 7%-9%. Across the state line in MO, there is no sales tax on food but the card can’t be used out of state. Granted, this is TANF money, not SNAP but still a completely a douche move.

            • whatthe46 August 2nd, 2015 at 11:56

crazy. in texas there is no tax on food. at least they got something right.

And while they are bombing the Middle East, who is going to be blowing a hole in our back door ?

  3. allison1050 August 1st, 2015 at 20:16

Now ask me if I’m surprised. When you have a Senator, Harvard Law graduate that really believes that SCOTUS can be dismissed well…need I say more? Another that can’t figure out how he and his family should live within their means (without using other peoples money) and if it means that the little Mrs. needs to stop pretending that she has access to more money than there actually is then the cow needs to get up off her ass and get a j-o-b. Okay that’s enough for now. :o)

I knew Republicans were unfit to govern way before all of this.

The GOP is about one thing and one thing only when dealing with the populace and politics, it is maintaining power through control. Thin the ranks of the poor and unfortunate through neglect, exploit immigrants, demonize minorities, reduce the importance of women through regulation etc. And appeal to everyone else with lies, misinformation and religion, While catering to the wealthy and corporations to fuel the machine. It’s no wonder that they appear incompetent and reluctant to debate or compromise. It’s not in their interests after all, it’s the best job they’ll ever have. And they’re not about to endanger that with ideals or morals or doing the right thing.

Wow, I just read the entire article over at Slate.
    If you haven’t, PLEASE do!
It’s long, but it’s worth it.
(Warning: The idiocy will hurt your brain. A lot.)

I’m really glad I saw this article and clicked through to the full version.
That did a great job of explaining what this whole thing has been like and what kind of a farce the entire thing was!

    RCC—– Republican Comedy Channel.

  9. fahvel August 2nd, 2015 at 03:19

from an alien point of view, it seems the repug party has been rather incompetent on a regular basis going back many many many decades. Why the surprise today?

  10. fahvel August 2nd, 2015 at 03:29

after a full reading I was surprised. I learned way way back in university that the emp’s could screw things up and that was one reason why the soviet union maintained a communications system using weird things like “tubes” for their radios etc.

A more interesting response to Senator Cruz
Secretary Kerry to Senator Cruz: I apologize to the families of the 241 American service members who were killed due to President Reagan’s incompetence and broken promise to stay after the “despicable act” in 1983 Beirut, President Reagan ran away.
