Why Obama Is Right About America’s Serious Gun Problem

Posted by | July 25, 2015 17:00 | Filed under: Opinion Politics

James Rothwell points out that statistics back up President Obama’s claim that America has a serious gun problem.

“If you look at the number of Americans killed since 9/11 by terrorism, it’s less than 100. If you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence, it’s in the tens of thousands,” he told the BBC. “For us not to be able to resolve that issue has been something that is distressing.”
But how does the rate of firearm murders in the United States stack up against the rest of the world? The results are somewhat surprising.

The rate of gun murders per 100,000 people in the United States 3.55, a figure dwarved by the rate per capita of Columbia (27.1) and South Africa (17) to name just two.

But compared to first world countries such as France, Canda and Spain, 3.55 deaths per capita is a staggeringly high figure.

France’s gun murder rate per 100,000 people is only 0.22, whereas in Spain it is 0.15.

Canada’ slightly higher rate of 0.51 is still a far cry from the sheer scale of murders involving guns in the United States.

This is all according to data collected by the University of Syndey’s School of Public Health and annual surveys by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

But, according to gun loons, it’s still TOO SOON to be talking gun control. We’re going to have to wait until the next mass shooting.

    • Larry Schmitt July 25th, 2015 at 17:22

A cynic would almost think that the shootings are planned by the NRA and the gun manufacturers, since sales shoot up after every occurrence. They’re always afraid of the non-existent confiscation of guns.

      • dewired4u July 25th, 2015 at 18:20

after every mass shooting we rush out and buy guns to feel safe but what that does is puts more guns in the hands of people who really don’t need a gun and don’t have the training or mental capacity to own one. It’s simple math more guns equals more gun violence equals more dead kids and innocent people.

        • BigDumbWhiteGuy July 25th, 2015 at 18:30

Simple math to me and you, point set topology to gunhumpers.

        • Dwendt44 July 25th, 2015 at 18:59

Yet studies show that a lower percentage of Americans have guns in their homes despite the huge increase in gun sales.
That means that those that do have guns have more guns.
It’s not unusual to find ammosexuals with 40 or 50 guns.
          Still only two hands though.

One can imagine these gun nuts crouched over the latest gun mag… double page glossy full color spread.. oiled butt… internal shots… everything revealed…delayed blowback…double action….. lots of adverts for confidential videos…. share your gun fantasy with like minded morons. Sad b*stards!

          • dewired4u July 26th, 2015 at 02:21

what those studies don’t show is how many guns are stolen and end up on the streets.here in ca they found some guy dead in his car and when they looked in his house they found 1200 guns 2 tons of ammo.

          • Garry Gale July 29th, 2015 at 11:04

            two hands..sadly no brain!

      • Tommie July 25th, 2015 at 20:01

I was thinking the same thing. I would ask myself, would the NRA and others sacrifice the American people just for profit! I do not think you are far off in your assessment, which i think is truly, truly sad! I know we have wars for profit but this is an American company and it’s citizens!

      • StoneyCurtisll July 25th, 2015 at 20:17

As the lunatic alex jones says…”follow the money”…
Unless of course it leads to the NRA…:)

        “Put down the gun, Rocky!”

“C’mon, moose, say “Nothin’ up my sleeve” one more time…”

  3. katkelly57 July 25th, 2015 at 18:48

Everything will remain the same until some GOPEE’er/NRA big shot’s family member(s) is involved in a shooting, either as victim or perpetrator…..but then again…..

  4. Obewon July 25th, 2015 at 19:14

U.S. gun deaths average 12 per 100,000 nationally and peak at 20 gun deaths per 100,000 in states with the most guns per capita.
More guns per person deliver up to +500% more gun deaths per person.

  5. Tommie July 25th, 2015 at 19:56

Of course he is right but when it cuts into the profits of the NRA, speaking on this issue is just plain wrong!

  6. greenfloyd July 25th, 2015 at 20:25

The worst country by far in terms of firerarm murders is Honduras, with a
rate of 64 deaths per 100,000 people. El Salvador, Venezuela and
Jamaica also saw gun murder rates substantially higher than that of the
    United States.

What makes America stand-out in its exceptional level of violence in general and with guns in particular is the same thing that makes Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico stand-out… Gangsta-culture!

Gc is the deformed offspring of social and economic ills compounded by govts that refuse or are unable to control popular, albeit illegal, drug markets.

    • Garry Gale July 29th, 2015 at 03:44

Most people do not equate America with 3rd world countries like you seem to want to do? And other ‘civilized advanced’ countries like Australia, Canada and most of Europe also have drugs, gangs, immigration problems, criminals and mentally unstable people… but they do not share America’s industrial gun homicide and injury rates…..Is it just coincidence(?) that they do not share America’s infantile obsessions with guns?

This Australian comedians really exposes all those moronic ammosexuals and the facile views of the NRA.

Pretty funny, although too vulgar for my taste.

Jefferies’ shtick to justify the Australian 1996 gun buy-back and how great it supposedly is, remains a subject of debate there. Some claim it’s what has caused a dramatic increase in illegal firearms and “accidents?” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_Australia

Australia and Canada have much smaller populations that are more rural and I suspect have more equitable distribution of wealth than the U.S. I don’t know enough about Europe to have an informed opinion. Although some of the most peaceful, i.e. Switzerland and Norway, have a very high concentration of guns and most of their citizens are required to have military training.

America is becoming a 3rd world country with all the violence, crime and corruption slowly eating away civil society.

Obama really can’t do anything about this because it would play right into the republican meme of ‘Obama is coming for our guns!’ that has gone on nonstop for the past 7 years.

I visited a couple of right winger sites long ago and just like dishonest right-wingers, they must have sold my e-mail address to every fundie freak show on the planet.

The day Obama was elected the ‘newsletters’ started rolling in with the subject “Obama is coming for your guns!” 15-20 of them a day and they have not stopped since.

They use the fact that Obama is black to make the nutjobs even more afraid and they even stopped being subtle about it.

They have had 7 years to build up a head of steam, to build their bunkers and stock up on ammo and freeze dried bacon, so they are just waiting for an excuse to start shooting.

Obama can’t give them a reason or the bloodshed will be massive, no one will be safe.

    • dewired4u July 26th, 2015 at 02:26

they did almost the same thing with Clinton not as bad but they learned how to sell guns and they went ballistic on Obama.

As long as there are people willing to kill people, people will need the right to be armed.

We have the 2nd Amendment not to protect against the fools we have voted for now, but in case we vote for Mussolini or Hitler like fools in the future.

    Most gun deaths are from:
    2006 Total (30896)
    55% Suicides (16992)
    41% Homicides (12667)
    2% Unintentional (accidents) (618)
    1% Legal Intervention (309)
    1% Other (309)

    2010 Total (31,076)
    62% Suicides (19392)
    35 % Homicides (11,078)
    2% Unintentional (accidents) (606)

You will not stop suicides with gun control, you will just change the the method used. Better mental health is the best way to decrease suicides.

    Solutions to gun violence:

    1. Remove public gun free zones.
    2. Enact better mental health laws and treatment.
    3. End the drug war and decriminalize drugs.

Allow teachers to be armed if they wish. Require they are trained.

As long as the government controlling NRA is around there will be lax gun laws which allows almost anyone to obtain a gun. Gun show and illegal street purchases will continue unabated. There are so many guns in America just about every citizen could have one with many more over in surplus. If I had one wish I wish all guns would disappear from the face of the earth forever but of course we all know that’s just a pipe dream. In the meantime there will be endless and horrific mass killings and suicides. Wash…rinse…repeat…..
