Missouri County To Lower Flag To Below Half-Staff To ‘Mourn’ Gay Marriage Decision

Dent County, Missouri, will lower its flag to “mourn” the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage.

[They will be] lowering the flags at the Dent County Courthouse and the Judicial Building to below half-staff on the 26th of each month for a year, running from July to June. The Supreme Court voted on June 26 to strike down constitutional bans on same-sex marriage throughout the country, including one that had been in place in Missouri since 2004.

“It ain’t what our Bible tells us. It’s against God’s plan,” County Commissioner Gary Larson said. The Supreme Court decision is “just one step backward,” he said.

Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles brought the matter forward on Monday; Larson and Commissioner Dennis Purcell both agreed to the year of mourning. Skiles, in an unusual action, filed a letter into the public record officially protesting “the U.S. high court’s stamp of approval of what God speaks of as an abomination.”

So, if a county employee whose regular duties include handling of official flags, refuses to lower the flag to half-staff because such an act would violate their deeply held religious beliefs that equality for all people is the only true path to god, will the county support their decision?

They would probably hoist him up on the flagpole. I’m sure they could find some biblical justification.

As long as they realize their way of thinking is dead, I’m fine with it.

  3. Budda July 14th, 2015 at 12:17

    Idiots.

    I salute them.

      Of course you do.
      Proud to be a bigot?
      Of course you are.

Of course you do. Because you’re a dead-ender, Maurice.

Years from now, your grandchildren will ask you where you stood on this totally human rights issue. And you will look as dumb to them as the dead-ender proponents of apartheid in South Africa.

And as dumb as the Jim Crow southern whites blocking blacks from using their water fountains and schools.

And as dumb as the men who complained about women voting being crammed down your throat.

        He’s lucky stupid isn’t painful.

It’s their flag. They have that right. I, personally, think it’s childish and overly demonstrative behavior, but that’s their prerogative, too.

    • Larry Schmitt July 14th, 2015 at 15:56

It’s not their flag, it’s the county’s flag. He shouldn’t be imposing his beliefs on the entire county.

As the elected official in charge of such decisions, he gets to decide what to do with the flag. If the people disagree with his decision, they can call his office. If he refuses to go along with the will of the people, they can remove him from his position, in the next election.

        • Dwendt44 July 15th, 2015 at 00:08

No he doesn’t. A government official has to obey the laws and the proper procedures. Government property isn’t there for personal use or to express a personal opinion.
Do cops get to put GOP bumper stickers on squad cars?

          • illinoisboy1977 July 15th, 2015 at 09:48

If he’s not representing the will of the people, they’ll let him know. If he’s in violation of the law, it will be up to the Attorney General to notify him and ask him to correct his behavior. If no one contacts him and no one publicly disapproves, he’s free to keep doing it. You’re only required to stop breaking the law, if you’re prosecuted or corrected for it. Otherwise, you’ve gotten away with it. No different from speeding, really. You’re okay to keep going fast, until you see the red and blue lights in your rearview. If you don’t get stopped, you’ve gotten away with it.
Being a government official, I’m sure he’s used to violating a dozen laws, every day before breakfast.

Perhaps if you are irresponsible and self centered official. Arrogance helps too. Trouble is, all to many intrenched officials think the office is theirs and theirs along to do with what they please, and that’s not the case.

    • tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 17:43

Not really, their belief is based on theocratic babble which is unconstitutional

      • illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 18:54

Then, if their constituents have a problem with it, they can challenge their stance and ask them to desist.

        • BigDumbWhiteGuy July 14th, 2015 at 18:58

Actually, they did. Some veterans reminded the officials that lowering the flag as an expression of their butthurt kind of cheapens the actual occasions for which it should be lowered.

          • illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 19:09

I hope they take it to heart. If not, there are further avenues of persuasion the good citizens can take.

        • tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 19:05

basically you are saying breaking the law and the constitution for discrimination and hate is good as long as the people agree with you…blather and phobia.

          • illinoisboy1977 July 14th, 2015 at 19:08

No, what I’m saying is that it can’t be corrected, unless people challenge it through accepted legal processes.

            • tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 19:14

Nope, that is not what you said.

  6. Chris July 14th, 2015 at 18:47

    Whiners.

Here’s an idea for LGBT activists: picket this place every 26th of the month with everyone waving American flags, along with signs that say, “I’m proud of my country!”

    • tracey marie July 14th, 2015 at 18:55

      That is an excellent idea.

  7. Warman1138 July 14th, 2015 at 18:49

Maybe someday a flag will be flown at half mast signaling the end of archaic beliefs.

  8. Elliot J. Stamler July 16th, 2015 at 16:37

Betcha if I wanted to marry my sister AND my mother both at the same time, it would be just fine in Dent County, Missouri.
