Republican Congressman Wastes Time With Bill Reaffirming Traditional Marriage

Posted by | July 10, 2015 18:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Iowa Congressman Steve King is fighting what he calls “judicial activism” by introducing a bill that affirms marriage between a man and a woman.

Whereas the opinion of the majority in Obergefell is a clear
case of judicial activism; and
Whereas the majority of the Supreme Court in Obergefell
acted legislatively, which is an unconstitutional violation
of the principle of separation of powers: Now, therefore,
be it
1 Resolved, That—
2 (1) the House of Representatives—
3 (A) disagrees with the majority opinion in
4 Obergefell and its holdings that the 14th
5 amendment to the Constitution requires States
6 to license marriages between same-sex couples
7 and requires States to recognize same-sex mar-
8 riages performed out-of-State; and
9 (B) agrees with the four dissenting opin-
10 ions in Obergefell, which uphold the traditional
11 definition of marriage as a union between one
12 man and one woman and the original meaning
13 of the 14th amendment; and
1 (2) it is the sense of the House of Representa-
2 tives that—
3 (A) the traditional definition of marriage is
4 a union between one man and one woman;
5 (B) the majority opinion in Obergefell un-
6 constitutionally and indefensibly perverts the
7 definition of marriage;
8 (C) the States may refuse to be bound by
9 the holding in Obergefell;
10 (D) the States are not required to license
11 same-sex marriage or recognize same-sex mar-
12 riages performed in other States; and
13 (E) individuals, businesses, churches, reli-
14 gious groups, and other faith-based organiza-
15 tions are encouraged, empowered, and protected
16 to exercise their faith without fear of legal or
17 government interference.

    I believe there are more pressing issues than this. What a waste of energy.

      As productive as the umpteen attempts to repeal the ACA.

  3. Larry Schmitt July 10th, 2015 at 18:36

    If there were any sense left in any of his colleagues, he would be laughed off the floor.

    I’ll bet he is one of the Loud Mouthed Conservatives that keeps hollering about reducing the debt by cutting government waste. How much of the tax payer’s dollars are being totally wasted on the piece of crap bill ?

    ‘Repeal the 10th and 14th equal marriage Amendments’-Klansman Steve King is constitutionally illiterate.

      How does he think he’s gonna change the Full Faith and Credit Clause…???

      • Obewon July 10th, 2015 at 20:38

        The only clause GOP think is valid is Santa Claus. And there ain’t no Federal Supremacy Clause in Article Six, Clause 2, neither!

      Remember that 20th century time when the GOP accepted 1973 Roe V Wade? In the year 2525, Anti-Privacy Repubs may finally accept Equal marriage SCOTUS reality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQB2-Kmiic

        It’ll be just like Roe v Wade…get ready for all kinds of nutty challenges (and I mean nutty) They’ll try to force counseling or waiting periods, force gays to get licenses in only one place in the sate and only on a certain day (both will have to show up in person) The writing is all over the wall on this one.
        It’s all they have left, they know they’re a dying breed. Sure there are lots of racists and xenophobes out there to support them…but not enough to ever take the WH again. Without gerrymandering and voter repression laws, these guys couldn’t get elected dog catcher

          IA-King’s unconstitutional delusions are the only cash-cows GOP have remaining to grift on, from their non-billionaire constituents.

    Throughout most of history, traditional marriage was usually a business transaction between father and prospective groom. The female was chatel. Be sure to play that up to your female audience… we support women being property cuz we’s good Christian ‘Publicans.

    Those of us who are familiar with Steve King are not surprised about his latest inanity. He’s lined up with the silly “Family Leader” Bob Vander Plaats in his holy war against gay marriage.

    Lost causes are the current stock in trade for the Republican Party. How else do you explain the interminable votes against Obamacare? They’d rather “send a message”, giving the semblance of work, than do anything constructive to help America.
