Mayor Uses Government Resources To Promote Christianity

The mayor of Orange, California has come under fire for repeatedly using government resources to promote Christian events.

[She Has] has come under fire from the national nonprofit organization Freedom From Religion Foundation for using government resources for Christian prayer breakfasts, reports Patheos.

These breakfasts were originally described as open to all faiths, but after FFRF further investigated them, the organization discovered evidence that suggests these events were biased towards a specific religion and that public officials were very involved in organizing the religious aspects.

In a letter to Mayor Teresa Smith’s office, FFRF wrote, “[T]hese prayer breakfasts were undoubtedly Christian affairs. In an October 8, 2013 email between a city staffer, Deputy City Manager Irma Hernandez, when asked about the content of the keynote speaker’s address, Hernandez stated ‘[h]e will be talking about how Christ and following Christ has impacted his life — duh it’s a prayer breakfast and their goal is to share the Gospel and bring people to Christ and strengthen their beliefs,’” reports Patheos.

While Smith’s office has yet to respond to FFRF’s claim, these events do pose “constitutional concerns,” as the group explains, violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Nothing like a bit of explicit display pushing a religion illegally.

  2. Larry Schmitt July 3rd, 2015 at 13:15

How loud would the outcry be if a Muslim mayor wanted to have a prayer breakfast using public funds? Even if he paid for it himself, they would try to run him out of town.

So which attorney is stepping up to the plate?

  4. labman57 July 3rd, 2015 at 14:44

Another right wing theocrat strives to promote the religious freedom of all Americans … just so long as you believe in Jesus Christ.

    • Larry Schmitt July 3rd, 2015 at 14:55

Once again, your intolerance of their religious intolerance is persecution of Christians. And if this mayor lost her job, she would have no idea why, because she sees nothing wrong with what she did.

Yeah, but I’m trying to limit the pillaging…

        • The Original Just Me July 4th, 2015 at 00:59

Funny thing, all of the raids and pillaging were all about revenge for the Christians raiding and pillaging the Norsemen and then trying to shove Christianity down their throats.

And if the Christians jumped off a bridge, would the Vikings have to do that too? ☺

I take it that you are not much into early European history. That’s okay, it is a bunch of old stuff and is totally different than today.

              • bpollen July 4th, 2015 at 14:30

I actually find ancient history quite interesting, even in Europe. But I bet the Vikings had a sense of humor… Look at how they named Greenland and Iceland.

I am of direct Danish decent. Therefore I got interested in Norsemen history and beliefs. It is absolutely fascinating how much influence they have had on today’s Christianity and the entire world. Many, many things we use in everyday life came from these peoples.

I was surprised by how much influence they had in bringing commerce to Russia.

                    • The Original Just Me July 5th, 2015 at 01:49

that was the group of Norsemen that went East and South from todays Sweden and Finland. They were called Russi’s. The people in present day Russia and Eastern Europe even hired these folks to govern them. No real wars there. These dudes went as far South as the middle east. I am trying to think of the name of the Middle east city the Russi tried to conquer but it isn’t coming just yet. Anyway, the people of the walled city held off the Ruussi several times but were so impressed by them , that they hired the Russi as guards for the city after things settled down.

                    • bpollen July 5th, 2015 at 03:42

I’d heard they were called the Rus… but otherwise it’s pretty much what i was talking about. Supposedly “Rus” means “boatman.” I can’t vouch for that because I barely speak English, let alone Swedish. But there are two theories about how they came to rule – by request or at the point of the sword. Again, I can’t say which is true (or true-er…)

As far as which city, I would guess Constantinople. They ended up hiring a buncha Swedish mercenaries.

                    • The Original Just Me July 5th, 2015 at 05:04

Yes that was the city. Well, it has been a thousand years ago. Accurate history is a little hard to come by. Still the whole history of the Norsemen is fascinating.

I’m a devout Christian and a strong believer in a very high wall between church and state.

For me, it’s a win-win. Good for America. Good for the church.

    • Dr. H. E. Sawyer, Jr. July 4th, 2015 at 22:06

The Church has no place in Government. How about you read the Constitution ? Or, is that not convenient for you ?

      • The Original Just Me July 5th, 2015 at 01:39

Did you miss read his post ? A very high wall, usually means a strong separation.

    • The Original Just Me July 5th, 2015 at 01:42

The problem seems to lie in the fact that It’s Good for the Church but the folks who run the Church don’t seem to be satisfied with all the power they already have. They want to run other peoples lives as well as the lives of their Sheepeople.

  11. crc3 July 4th, 2015 at 01:46

What ever happened to that “separation of church and state” thingy?

    • The Original Just Me July 5th, 2015 at 01:37

      Ask a Christian.

  12. Jeffrey Samuels July 4th, 2015 at 15:30

The problem with these folks is that they are so convinced that their religion is the only one that they just really can’t understand that promoting Christianity in various denominations is still just promoting Christianity.
