Pastor Says He Won’t Set Himself On Fire After All Because Of Gay Marriage

Posted by | June 27, 2015 19:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Religion

Rick Scarborough says he was just quoting a song when he said he’d “burn” if the Supreme Court approved gay marriage.

In — literally — a ‘fire and brimstone‘ proclamation, Pastor Rick Scarborough said he and his fellow pastors should band together to halt the growing threat of same sex marriage, saying, “We are not going to bow, we are not going to bend, and if necessary, we will burn.”

Twenty-four hours after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage, Scarborough explained that he wasn’t really going to set himself on fire — he was just using the words of a Christian spiritual to rally the troops.

“I made that comment to paraphrase a spiritual song, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in which the three were given a choice—to bow to the image of Nebucahdnezzar or burn in a furnace,” Scarborough explained .” ‘We will burn’ means that we will accept any sanction from the government for resisting [Friday’s] Supreme Court decision. We do not support any violence or physical harm.”

  15. jybarz June 27th, 2015 at 21:41

Now I know what ‘talk is cheap’ means.

  16. Bunya June 27th, 2015 at 22:35

Did anybody actually believe he would actually follow through with it? Like Ted Nugent, they’re all talk, no action.

Revelations says something about the “mark of the beast” and anybody who receives it will be doomed. I would bet any money that these preachers who advise their parishioners to beware of the mark, would be the first in line to receive it if it meant more money in their pockets.

  17. granpa.usthai June 28th, 2015 at 01:21

    ye of such little faith.

  18. Chris June 28th, 2015 at 08:34

“And when I said they’d get my gun only by prying it from my cold, dead fingers, I made that comment to paraphrase a spiritual song from our dear sainted Charlton Heston. We do not support any violence or physical harm.”

  19. rg9rts June 28th, 2015 at 13:57

    Typical christian BS

    • Talkin_Truth June 29th, 2015 at 01:52

      Not all Christians, BTW.

I’m a Christians and I’m good with the gays.

We liberal Christians led society on this issue. My church was doing gay weddings long before it was legal in any state.

      • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 02:25

You are not a Christian. You are a Christian in name only. A cino.
Christians know God and His Holy Truth and therefore know that God said homosexuality is a sin.
You are a liar and you are calling God a liar.

        • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 06:40

You’re the only liar I see.

        • tracey marie June 29th, 2015 at 07:16

That was judgy and non christian, so is hate and phobias

        • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 08:02

God also said eating shellfish and wearing mixed fibers are sins. And BTW, how many prostitutes have you stoned today? If you’re going to follow the bible, you have to follow all of it. You can’t be a cafeteria Christian.

          • Talkin_Truth June 29th, 2015 at 10:35

Doug doesn’t do so well with discussion. He mostly just takes pot shots and moves on.

            • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 11:17

Not much interested in listening, except when it comes to his own voice, right? Not a lot of fun talking to people like that.

            • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 14:52

I will thoroughly discuss God’s Holy Word with you right here on this thread anytime you want.

              • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 14:56

That’s a very limited choice of topics. You’d be a pretty boring date.

              • Bunya June 29th, 2015 at 14:58

I would think you’d have to read God’s Holy Word, first. Let me know which of over the 100,000 revisions/interpretations of the bible you’ll be using.

                • Still Seeking June 30th, 2015 at 19:05

All of them might be a good start

                  • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 00:31

It’ll take him 15 lifetimes to read all the personal interpretations of God’s word. i simply can’t wait that long for Doug to figure out which one of the 100,000+ copies isn’t corrupt.

              • tracey marie June 29th, 2015 at 19:03

You will recite babble and rules for obedience, easier then thinking for yourself

          • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 14:04

Please cite book chapter and verse for all of that.

            • whatthe46 June 29th, 2015 at 14:18

              you should know!

            • whatthe46 June 29th, 2015 at 14:19

where in the bible does it say that gays and lesbians can’t marry?

              • Bunya June 29th, 2015 at 14:48

To be fair, they don’t actually READ the bible. They depend on their preachers to tell the who to hate, and why.

              • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 14:48

God said that same sex sex aka homosexuality is a sin.

                • fredoandme June 29th, 2015 at 15:04

god has never, ever really said anything. people read from a book. that’s not god, not even admissible evidence for any god’s existence.

                  • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 18:03

If God is not real, where did the universe and mankind come from?

                    • fredoandme June 29th, 2015 at 18:11

                      who cares? doesn’t matter.

                    • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 19:01

There’s that deep thinking that made this a once great country.

                    • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 19:02

She can reserve her deep thoughts for more important matters.

                    • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 21:14

                      So I’ve heard.

Science, actual thinking….believing a centuries old many times revised book of fables is a lack of thinking skills. You obey or else types crack me up.

                    • OldLefty June 29th, 2015 at 19:09

Then the next question is, who created God?

                    • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 21:11

                      No one.

He was, He is and He always will be.

                      He is eternal.

                    • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 21:47

Man created god, in his own image.

                    • fredoandme June 29th, 2015 at 21:53

                      sure, sure.

                    • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 21:54

Was god bored sitting there all by himself for the eternity that he existed before he started creating stuff?

                    • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 21:57

I don’t know but if He allows you to speak when you stand before Him you can ask Him.

                    • OldLefty June 30th, 2015 at 06:10

That is no different than the belief that the elements that make up the universe were always there.
A being could always be there but not hydrogen?

                    • Doug Bristow June 30th, 2015 at 11:15

                      God created hydrogen.

                    • OldLefty June 30th, 2015 at 12:23

                      Maybe… maybe not.

                      Thing is, we don’t know.

                    • Doug Bristow June 30th, 2015 at 13:16

                      Thing is we do know.

                    • OldLefty June 30th, 2015 at 13:32

                      No, WE don’t.
Some people think they do, just as some Hindus, some Muslims and some Shintos and some atheists think THEY know.

                    • Doug Bristow June 30th, 2015 at 13:43

We do know because we know the Creator of the universe. His name is Jehovah. He is the one and only true living God.

                    • OldLefty June 30th, 2015 at 14:05

                      Many people don’t believe that.

Hindus believe that MahaVishnu is the creator of the universe.

Basically it gets down to what you believe.

It is the certitude that causes death and destruction in the world.

                    • Doug Bristow June 30th, 2015 at 14:15

Jehovah God is Creator, Lord and Savior.

                    • OldLefty June 30th, 2015 at 14:27

                      According to you.
And that is very nice for you.

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 00:24

But he just can’t seem to figure out how to forgive sins. He had to create this elaborate drama whereby he sends his son to go thru hell on earth so he can finally possess the power to forgive. Makes sense.

                    • fredoandme June 29th, 2015 at 20:58

i have other, much more important things to think about and so should you.

                    • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 21:05

Nothing or no one is more important than God.

                    • fredoandme June 29th, 2015 at 21:37

i disagree. god is the least important thing in the world. among all things intangible, the unimportance of god is staggering. pixies, poltergeists and compassionate conservatives included.

                • whatthe46 June 29th, 2015 at 16:13

you didn’t tell me anything. i said where in the bible does it say “gays and lesbians” cannot marry? don’t play stupid.

Leviticus 18:22New King James Version (NKJV)

22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.

                    ———————-

Romans 1:24-27New King James Version (NKJV)

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who
exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the
creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise
also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their
lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and
receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

                    • whatthe46 June 29th, 2015 at 18:15

if you know the bible so well, why did it take you 2 hrs to respond for one? two, who did GOD tell that to and when? 3, where is it (man written) in the bible that says Gays and Lesbians can’t get married? i’m not going to ask you again. so, if your response is going to be wash, rinse, repeat, then keep it to yourself.

For this reason God gave them up

                      yeah. god is clearly insane.

As far as I know, God never gives up on His children, but does give them up to their ways.

                    • fredoandme June 30th, 2015 at 19:05

and that doesn’t sound ridiculous to you?

                    • whatthe46 June 30th, 2015 at 19:07

                      so you heard from him?

                    • Still Seeking June 30th, 2015 at 19:55

When I wanted to more than anything else — just enough to know He was there and He wanted me and He was real. Funny, how nobody believed me though. That was a long time ago…not that I didn’t believe in Him before that, but I thought He was just there to clobber me when I did something wrong. There have been dark periods, though, when I couldn’t seem to find Him — think it is kind of like a child learning to walk, but the father or mother’s arms are there to catch them. I don’t hear an audible voice, but believe me, I do “hear” from Him. He is closer to us than you can ever imagine. I can still feel all the pain in the world everyone else feels that doesn’t know Him and He gives me eyes to see the sufferings of this world more clearly and more deeply, but the fact that I know He loves all His creation makes all hardships worth it.

                    • whatthe46 June 30th, 2015 at 20:12

here’s the problem with people like you. you pick and choose what you like or dislike about the “word” and what you’re comfortable with. i believe in GOD but i don’t need to subscribe to the b.s. people like you preach. my GOD is a loving GOD. i don’t know who in the hell you pray to.

What part of “I know He loves all His creation” means that you think that I think God is not a loving God? I can only guess. Maybe you think that God would not let us suffer? I don’t know. We live in a fallen world. Although we are “in” it does not mean we are “of” it if we believe we have an eternal destiny in a world that is not fallen. Because your God is a loving God, I believe we pray to the same God.

It’s not in the Constitution, ergo you don’t get to inject your religious beliefs into our laws.

Hi, Doug. The field certainly isn’t ripe for harvest, nor the seeds ready to plant, but we can till the ground?

but he loves him some incest and rape…

            • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 14:45

Leviticus chapters 19 and 20 are full of all kinds of laws. Did you know adulterers are to be put to death? Anyone who curses his mother or father? Death. Deuteronomy says parents can take a rebellious son out and have him stoned. It’s your bible, I’m surprised you don’t know this.

              • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 18:17

The difference is that which is sin to God is still punishable by death but now instead of immediate punishment we are now in the New Covenant of His Grace through and because of the Blood Atonement for sin by Christ Jesus as opposed to the Old Covenant of Judaical Law. We ALL have sinned and deserve the wrath of God but because of Christ, those sins can now be forgiven if only we ask. To avoid His wrath we must be born again as Jesus said in John 3….link below.

                • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 18:34

But you can’t cite the part of the OT that makes homosexuality a sin and disregard the part about mixed fibers and adulterers and rebellious children being stoned to death. You either follow the whole thing or throw the whole thing out. And you’re wasting your time trying to convince me of the idea of a savior. I decided as soon as I could think for myself that that concept didn’t make sense. And it still doesn’t.

                  • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 18:57

                  • Still Seeking June 30th, 2015 at 18:51

Somes laws were written to set the Jewish people apart from the rest of the world, but Jesus came to do away with laws that had nothing to do with our relationship to God. Our bodies are sacred as we are made in His image and the marriage bed is sacred as it reflects our relationship with Him and the “otherness”. We are not God, but we are to become like Him and to seek after Him, not ourselves. We will only find our true selves in Him. Jesus also said that he who is without sin cast the first stone.

                • tracey marie June 29th, 2015 at 18:58

“Blood atonement for sin by Jesus Christ” So our all merciful, loving God the Father, demanded that his only begotten and perfect Son be tortured and crucified as a blood sacrifice before this so-called Father would forgive the rest of his sinful children?

You must have a very low opinion of God the Father, Doug. I don’t even know of a Human parent who would demand such an atrocity of their first born much less a God.

                  • Doug Bristow June 30th, 2015 at 11:08

Christ is God and God is Christ therefore He sacrificed Himself.

                    • Rhadakrishnan June 30th, 2015 at 11:16

Well that certainly clears it up. He came down to earth as an incarnation of Himself, to sacrifice Himself to Himself in order to forgive His people, whom he had made in the image of Himself, and save them from…the wrath of…HIMSELF!

                    • Still Seeking June 30th, 2015 at 18:37

Sounds silly, doesn’t it, but it’s true. He suffered all that to save us from OURselves. A loving Father will go to all extremes to bring His children home.

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 00:13

So your god isn’t as powerful as you say he is. Why should he suffer when he can simply snap his finger to save us? And save us from what? Eternal damnation to a hell of HIS making? What kind of loving father condemns his children to never ending punishment in a lake of fire? I would think a simple “time out” would be sufficient.

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 11:55

He has already suffered the lake of fire for us, but being as we are, we prefer to stay in it. His hand is always there to lift us out.

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 13:44

That makes no sense. That’s like me deliberately cutting off my arm to insure my son isn’t in a car accident.
                      .
I will, however, compliment you on your ability to debate in an intelligent manner. You’re a change from our current ecclesiastical group of folks who post here. They start put okay, but usually end up resorting to insults and accusations of us being “Christian persecutors”.

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 15:14

Yes, it makes no sense at all that Almighty God could love us as we are, but, hey, wouldn’t you cut off your arm if it would prevent your son from being killed in an accident? Thanks for the compliment — you are challenging and I have enjoyed getting to know you!!!

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 15:19

So it makes no sense that an omnipotent god, who has the power to forgive, would deliberately punish himself for no reason – unless he’s into that masochistic stuff.

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 15:48

Well isn’t that better than being sadistic? ” Hey, my kid has been really bad so I will spank myself instead.” It makes no sense at all, but that’s why we followers are called fools for Christ.

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 16:18

So you can’t really fault people of other faiths and/or Atheists for not believing something so unbelievable. You can’t say they’ll be punished for being non-believers, because there’s no proof that it will ever happen.
                      .
I don’t condemn people of faith. Some need a promise of eternal salvation to make the experience of death more palatable.

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 21:06

Good for you! Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but to save it. There is no death – He has conquered death. There is only eternal glory for those who want it, but not just for themselves.

                    • Bunya July 2nd, 2015 at 11:11

If that’s what you believe, and it gets you through the day, go with it.

              • Rhadakrishnan June 30th, 2015 at 09:45

Furthermore, touching the skin of a pig is an abomination punishable by damnation. Which means there’s a lot of damned quarterbacks.

                • Larry Schmitt June 30th, 2015 at 10:01

Actually, footballs have never been made from pigskin. They were called that because in the 19th century some balls were made from animal bladders, including pigs. But when rubber vulcanization was invented, they were made of rubber. Since the 1950’s they’ve all been made from cowhide.

And to think that all these years I’ve been avoiding footballs for nothing. What a relief knowing I’m not going to hell. Thanks for the salvation.

                    • Larry Schmitt June 30th, 2015 at 10:36

Once a name takes hold it’s hard to change it. Like baseballs being called horsehide. MLB switched to cowhide in 74, but the ball is still referred to as a horsehide.

“Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.

Deuteronomy 22:21 – King James version

            • whatthe46 June 30th, 2015 at 19:35

When you cherry pick the bible: Leviticus:

Drinking alcohol in holy places (bit of a
problem for Catholics, this ‘un) (10:9) [“You will die.” May only apply to the
              priesthood.]

Going to church within 33 days after giving birth to
              a boy (12:4) [Actually, she’s unclean a week, and then another 33
days. Then she has to offer up a sacrifice.]

Going to church within 66 days after giving birth to
              a girl (12:5) [Actually, she’s unclean a week, and then another 66
days. Then she has to offer up a sacrifice.]

              Mixing fabrics in clothing (19:19)

              Trimming your beard (19:27)

              Mistreating foreigners – “the foreigner
residing among you must be treated as your native-born” (19:33-34)

              Working on the Sabbath (23:3)

              (Leviticus
              35-37):

If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are
unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and
stranger, so they can continue to live among you. Do not take interest or any
profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among
you. You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit.

          • Ormond Otvos June 29th, 2015 at 15:20

All religions have very ambiguous holy books, poetry, interpretations. It’s not because god speaks a weird language, it’s because people write weird books, and interpret things to their own authoritarian benefit.

            What’s new?

            • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 15:27

I grew up catholic (then I grew up) and I could never understand why it was okay to eat fish but not a hot dog. Isn’t fish the meat of an animal? And it was okay to eat eggs, but not chicken. That’s crazy. And as Carlin said, there are people doing an eternity in hell for eating a hot dog, because something as idiotic as that was a “mortal sin.”

              • William June 29th, 2015 at 18:44

Purgatory. It’s ok to eat meat on Friday now. But is it retroactive? How many souls are doing 10 to 20 on a hotdog rap?

                • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 19:00

Carlin asked that years ago. But it was a mortal sin, and you’d go to hell for a hot dog on Friday, not purgatory.

                  • William June 29th, 2015 at 21:25

The reason fish wasn’t considered meat by the Catholic Church thus making it ok to eat fish on Fridays was because the Italian fish industry lobbied the Pope. I’m not making that up nor resorting to sarcasm or snark. That’s the truth.

“You can’t be a cafeteria Christian.”
Yes he can, this is America. The constitution clearly states that he can lie as much as he wants, even to himself, as long as he isn’t infringing on your rights by doing so. I think you’ll find that most Christians in American are Sunday Christians, or cafeteria Christians as you called them.

Ooh! Ooh! I know this one! Christians don’t hate homosexuals, nosiree. They “love the sinner, hate the sin”. In other words, “We don’t hate gays – God does”. See how that works? That way you’re automatically absolved of your hatred by blaming your god.

I don’t believe Jesus is the son of God. I think He was an outstanding prophet, but I don’t put him on the same platform as God. That would be disrespectful, and against the first commandment. I would say Jesus was equivalent to Mohammed.

You realize that the bible was written by men, don’t you?

          • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 14:47

2 Timothy 3:16-17New King James Version (NKJV)

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

            • Bunya June 29th, 2015 at 14:50

Written by Timothy who, by my assumption, was a man. Although Timothy could have also been a woman. Who knows?

              • Doug Bristow June 29th, 2015 at 14:55

A letter written by Paul to Timothy under the direction of the Holy Spirit which is God. All Scripture is from God to man via God’s Holy Spirit.

                • Bunya June 29th, 2015 at 15:10

Paul (a man) told Timothy (also a man) that God spoke to him.
                  .
Let’s see what we have here. We have a God, the alpha and the omega, who is all powerful, omnipotent, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but he just isn’t powerful enough to tell the whole world what he wants? He’s only going to tell certain people his laws and possibly risk them misinterpreting His message? C’mon.

                  • Still Seeking June 30th, 2015 at 17:14

Ask Him to tell you and if you really want to know — only if you really want to know — that may take awhile, but He will answer — maybe not in the black and white you want to hear and certainly not in 50 shades of grey, but you will know without a doubt that He is the I AM.

                    • Bunya June 30th, 2015 at 17:22

So God’s not powerful enough to give me a straight answer? Yeah okay. I’ll file that one under “all non-Christians are eternally damned”.

                    • Still Seeking June 30th, 2015 at 19:27

I would file that one, too!!! The only straight answer that He gives me is that He is God and He exists and He most certainly loves all His children. I haven’t studied other religions enough to know if their god is the God who loves them. You have to truly seek after Him to learn more and He will give you what you need to know when you are ready.

                    • Bunya June 30th, 2015 at 23:52

Actually Jesus was a Buddhist, which is where he got all that “love your neighbor” stuff from. Buddhists are big on “peace, love and the brotherhood of man”.

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 11:32

Don’t know much about Buddhism, but aside from being God, Jesus, in His earthly existence, was brought up in the Jewish faith. There are a lot of similarities in Buddhism and Christianity, but I think Buddhism is more about an escape from this world and suffering with the final goal as being a dissipation of the self, whereas Jesus taught us that there will be suffering in this world and the final goal is that the uniqueness of the self will be enhanced as we become more like Him. That sounds like an oxymoron, but is part of the mystery.

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 12:02

Why does everything have to be a mystery? I don’t understand organized religion at all. It sounds to me like your god wants to operate salvation like a fraternity. One has to decipher the mystery in order to stay out of hell.
                      .
You should look at other religions. They all preach basically the same things. The Qur’an practically mirrors the bible, with the exception of the mention of Jesus whereas the Torah says nothing about him.
                      .
Funny thing about religion, throughout history more wars were started in the name of God than for any other reason. Image that. People killing other people over the belief of an imaginary guy in the sky. Stupid.

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 13:33

I would much prefer a direct answer, too, but the best answer I can think of is that mystery strengthens our faith, but our faith is also a gift from God. Sounds crazy, huh — we need faith, but God is the only one who can give it to us. Guess we have to ask Him for it?
The Qur’an does not mirror the bible – nowhere in the Qur’an does it say Allah loves us. Jesus is all over the Torah. He was in the beginning and is the Alpha and the Omega. His coming to earth in human form is found in the New Testament, although it was prophesied in the Old Testament that He would come as the Messiah. Oh, yes … Christians have and still do as much stupid stuff as any other religious or non-religious people. Sorry about that.

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 13:56

I beg to differ. I’ve read the Qur’an and it DOES mention Jesus, quite a lot actually. However, since they are a monotheistic religion, they don’t believe Jesus was a god. They think Jesus was a prophet, like Mohammed.
                      .
Also, if you look in the old testament, it doesn’t say anything about Jesus specifically. The bible does predict the second coming, but they don’t think Jesus was it, and they’re still waiting.

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 15:39

Oh, yes, the Qur’an does mention Jesus, but they believe it is disgraceful that God would die on a cross (even though He rose from the dead), but nowhere in the Qur’an does it say that Allah loves us. Jesus’ birth as our Savior was prophesied in the Old Testament, but he also appeared in various forms in the Old Testament. You can google that for more information. I probably will, too, when I have more time. Oh, and, yes, the Jews are still waiting for the Messiah (Messianic Jews have already found Him), and so have a lot Muslims — Jesus has been appearing to them in visions and dreams). The Jews are still looking for the Jesus who returns in His power and glory which will be in the second coming. Thanks … I am anxious to find more information about His appearances in the Old Testament – I remember one but can’t spell the name ..Mel-cheese-a-deck, or something — or maybe it was Mel Gibson? bwahahahah

                    • Bunya July 1st, 2015 at 16:13

The Muslims don’t think Jesus was the son of God, but they have great respect for him – and they think he will return during the second coming. The Qur’an states that Allah loves us and is forgiving and merciful. That is exactly what the Bible teaches. If you sin and ask God for forgiveness, he will forgive. If you don’t, you’ll be subjected to eternal damnation.
                      .
                      From the Qur’an:
“And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself, but then seeks forgiveness from Allah, he will find Allah forgiving and merciful” (Surat an-Nisaa 4:110)
“Truly, Allah LOVES those who turn unto him in repentance.” (Quran: 2:222)
                      .
Read the Qur’an some time. You’ll be surprised what you find out. As for Muslims who have had dreams of Jesus; everyone has dreams, and it seems that’s the only time Jesus reveals himself to them. I had a dream once that a giant bird picked me up and dropped me in the Grand Canyon. It felt so real, that I thought it actually happened. Apparently it didn’t because I woke up in my bed, safe and sound. If Jesus did appear to these people, I would think it would be more advantageous if he came to them during a Rolling Stones concert or at some venue where there’s a lot of people.
                      .

                    • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 18:25

But you see … read what you have written from the Qur’an — Allah loves you if you turn to Him in repentance. Allah loves you if you are good and deep down, most people know their motives are not pure, although they may intend them to be. God loves us regardless, whether we repent or not — He does not send us to eternal damnation, unless that is where we want to be — in a state of being in defiance of Him, if you will.
I think you are stuck in a religion of scientism — you need concrete proof, but even if Jesus stood before you, would you believe it was Him? We will all get that chance in the second coming where there will be no doubt. Doubt is not a bad thing here on earth, for that is one way we can grow. I have wondered what it would be like to have a near death experience as some people claim to have had and gotten to see Jesus as He is. I would love to have that happen and it actually did — I was basically dead for just 2 minutes about a day after heart surgery – had a convulsion when I first got up and saw my foot shaking and that was all I remember until I woke and saw the face of a neuro staff person staring at me with horn-rimmed glasses and a big nose asking me what the flash cards were, etc. I had gone into cardiac arrest, collapsed lung and had left side paralysis. But in between that time, I found myself in a white room and saw my father who had been dead for 30 years seated at a table. The room was so bright that the only colors I saw were his flesh colors and he looked in his twenties, but died at age 59. Also, he was having some kind of a discussion with an elder. That picture is a snap shot still in my mind. I didn’t get to see Jesus. Maybe I was in a waiting room? Like in Beetlejuice? But no weird characters were waiting there with me. That could have been my brain partying … who knows for sure? No proof for me sayeth the soup Nazi. Yet still I believe – I have a knowing I have bet my life on — uhoh — just got beat on the head with a bible beater (no gambling allowed).

Really? You think your god loves you regardless of whether you repent or not? I don’t think so. Please see below. Even after over 100,000 revisions/alterations, eternal damnation is still alive in the bible.
                      Revelation 21:8
“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

                      Matthew 25:46
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
                      Psalm 9:17
“The wicked return to the grave, all the nations that forget God.”
                      2 Thessalonians 1:9
“They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power”
                      Matthew 13:50
“and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
If you do some research, you will see people of other faiths (and people of no faith whatsoever) having near death experiences. The only difference, they don’t see Jesus, they see Allah, Yahweh or whoever their God is.

                    • Still Seeking July 2nd, 2015 at 13:57

Whew!…these are some really big issues you have brought up — very harsh bible verses to say the least. But in order to understand them, from whatever name you give Him, you need to have our Father’s heart, or the Holy Spirit’s, or the spirit of Jesus, all the same. Understanding the Trinity is another mind-boggling subject, but to stick to the point: Of course, God loves us even though we may not be repentant — would you not love your child even though he/she is having a temper tantrum? Would you send them to eternal damnation? Now the far Christian right is having a hard time with this, too, perhaps thinking more in congruence with Allah or Yahweh’s perceived vengefulness, and the far Christian left has ignored these “silly” verses completely. They aren’t to be ignored, however, because there actually is an eternal damnation: that being a separation from God. We live in a fallen world. God put us here for a purpose; not just to smell the flowers, but to plant and care for them. But we can’t agree on where to plant the flowers, or which type we should plant or anything else because everybody’s god is telling them something different? It is a sad situation. There’s a better answer than fluffy brotherly love vs shooting our viewpoints down each other’s throats, (or even worse). You see?…We are not good. We can do good things, but only God is good and He came to us in Jesus, not just as a prophet, but as Himself. He came to restore our relationship to Himself, and you have heard all this and we understand each other as we are both seeking the Truth. I personally believe that God is able to speak to all his children by any name they wish to call Him, but Jesus is the only One who comes to us to show His unending love. I believe He will never let one of His children suffer eternal damnation and waits patiently for that “repentance”? The repentance that Allah seeks. But does Allah love you or not while he is waiting. I think He does, but you are right — Jesus, Allah and Yahweh are the same if you know that you are loved by Him repentant or not. Sorry for the repetition. And thank you for stretching my mind and heart.

                    • Bunya July 2nd, 2015 at 15:22

So your God doesn’t love you unconditionally. You, yourself said; “I believe He will never let one of His children suffer eternal damnation and waits patiently for that ‘repentance’ “. What happens to those who don’t repent? They go to hell. Same as in the Qur’an. Allah also loves you and is waiting for you to repent.
                      .
According to Islamic belief, Jesus is not God. They don’t believe in the 3-gods-in-1 theory. They like and respect Jesus, but like the Jews, they don’t think he’s the son of God.

                    • Still Seeking July 2nd, 2015 at 17:51

OK, I will tell you my belief about this, but it is radical. Jesus was radical in His interpretation of the scriptures. I put “repentance” in parentheses because Jesus on the cross prayed “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”. They crucified Him, but He didn’t stay dead – you can’t kill God. “Little children” do not know what they do. I have seen them on some of these posts, but not in your posts — your posts show deep thought and passion. He forgives them though they are not repentant per se, and He loves them. Okay, this is my secret belief, although it will no longer be secret and may upset some of my Christian friends, but not the most liberal because they believe that you can believe anything you want, but that implies that there is no absolute Truth, or nobody can know it entirely, which is also true, but some believe you can also be a Christian even if Jesus isn’t God and is just a prophet as the Muslims believe, but I believe that is just humanism, but I’m getting off the track. So you said “what happens to those who don’t repent — they go to hell, just as the Qur’an says”. This is what is radical — I think we here on earth are already in hell – doing what we want to some degree or another depending on whatever higher power we believe in or not, and some of us are here by choice as Jesus says that His Kingdom is also here, but is not of this world even though we are in the world. I believe that some of us who are chosen are here to help lead others into His Kingdom. Is this belief why some radical Islamic would behead me right now? Or some radical Christian stone me to death? And then I bring some Buddhism and a little Hinduism into the mixture and am thinking that those “little children” who know not what they do are reincarnated until they get it. But then, again, in Buddhism, you just experience osmosis into the universe as your reward, or if you are a Hindu, you just keep coming back because you have to be “good” enough by yourself to get to Heaven. I wonder if this will get deleted before you get it? Or my computer will crash??? And, yes, I know Islamics don’t believe in the Trinity. But who was God talking to when He said “Let us make man in our image”? Maybe to Himself like I do a lot.

                    • Bunya July 3rd, 2015 at 15:18

To be honest, I don’t know who God was talking to when he said, “Let us make man in our image”, or if he said that at all. Men wrote the bible, so of course they’re going to give themselves the power to rule over all the earth. And people believe it because all they know about God and Jesus is what they’ve been taught. There’s no dispute because nobody can prove anything in the bible. You’re simply told to believe what you’re told, or suffer eternal damnation when you die.
                      .
Think about this for a minute. Wars were fought and people killed because one religious group thought they were endowed by their creator with superiority over others of another faith. This planet is being destroyed because men think they own it, to do to it what they wish, because God gave it to them. Nobody cares about climate change, or that the rainforest is disappearing, or that animals that once flourished are now dying off. Why? Because they think their God is controlling everything, and if they break it, God will just fix it.
And THAT, to me, is a very dangerous mindset.
                      .
                      Imagine there’s no heaven.
                      It’s easy if you try.
                      No hell below us.
                      Above us only sky…..

                    • Still Seeking July 3rd, 2015 at 17:17

Some believe that it was aliens who created us – extraterrestrials. They could have been talking to each other? Yes, men wrote the bible, but God is Spirit and He talks to us in Spirit and the bible is very difficult to read because of that. If you were God, how would your communicate with your Creation if you were Spirit and they were flesh? You would have to give them your Spirit. That is how we got the bible. Men wrote it as God gave them His Spirit. The bible has a lot of history in it, mostly of how the Jewish nation was formed and the struggle they had to understand God. God gave His Spirit to those whom He chose (why not everyone? I don’t know – maybe those whom He knew were receptive to it.) God was preparing His people and when the time was right, He sent us Jesus – someone we could understand with skin on, like us. Some still couldn’t believe, but those of them who did believe, He gave His Spirit to. And He still does, but even though we have His Spirit to guide us, we often get it wrong. Because there is another evil spirit who has dominion over the earth at present and he has spread his gases all over the earth. Why? I don’t know why God would allow this, but it is only temporary. Now, are we all going to hell because we have breathed in the evil gases because God allowed them here on earth? That would make God the devil. Are we supposed to “repent” because we have breathed in the evil gases that God allowed on earth? How could that be if God made us and said that we were good? But then, why do we do things of which are not good? Those bad things we do are not of us, but of the devil. I think a better use of the word “repent” would be in the story of the prodigal son who “came to his own” — he understood that he belonged to his father — his father’s love knew no bounds. That’s what we are to realize — that we belong to God. You are right, this life is full of horrible things, but John Lennon was only imagining that there is no heaven. I will know you when we get there and we’ll have all eternity beyond what we can imagine – gotta go.

                    • Bunya July 6th, 2015 at 11:23

Does it make them wrong because they believe extraterrestrials created us? No, because who knows? They may be right, and nobody can prove otherwise. You and I were taught to believe that there’s a God and he loves us, so if evil happens it must be the work of a devil. You don’t question it, you just believe it. I was taught that there’s only one God, yet there are three, but there’s still only one God. That makes no sense, but you don’t question it, you just believe it. That’s what makes organized religion so successful. People will believe anything you tell them to believe. If you threaten them with eternal damnation, you bet they’ll run to church, rushing to part with their hard earned money. I would think that if God needed money, he wouldn’t need to depend on his children to support him.

                    • Still Seeking July 6th, 2015 at 13:27

No, it doesn’t make them wrong — the universe is a very big place, who knows the end from the beginning? And then you would have to ask, who created the extraterrestrials, plus we don’t look like little green men if we are made in their image and if they were God, they wouldn’t be abducting humans and experimenting with them or flying around in saucers? Yes, we most certainly are taught that there is a God, but like Helen Keller, we can also know there is a God, as she knew it before someone told her. As far as having not to question and just believe, that does not make sense. Why did the chicken cross the road? You can study all the chicken’s habits, psychoanalyze it, follow it and see where it’s destination is, or do all sorts of scientific studies, but the only way you are really going to know is to ask the chicken. And if the chicken doesn’t speak your language, there is a problem. That’s why Jesus came to us in human form. God, Himself, came to us in human form. And then He left us in His human form, but not without sending His Spirit – the Holy Spirit — so you have the Trinity – One God in Three forms. You have His Spirit to guide you and those who also have His Spirit to help you (and each other) to understand. What I have just said will be as clear as mud unless you ask for His Spirit to help you.

                    • Bunya July 6th, 2015 at 16:16

You’re right. It makes no sense to believe what we’re told, but we do it every day. That’s why religious organizations indoctrinate their believers at a very early age – as young as 3-years-old. They’re very easily swayed to believe anything they’re told to believe.
                      .
Jesus never claimed to be the son of God, but you believe it anyway because that’s what you were taught. Somebody told you the “3-gods-in-one” theory, so you automatically think it’s the gospel truth. You don’t question it. I was always one to question anything if it sounded fishy or unbelievable. During the run up to the Iraq war, Bush insisted we had to invade because they were harboring WMD’s. Everybody fell for that line of BS and very few questioned it’s validity. The result of that belief is hundreds of thousands of innocent people dead, a country in chaos and the mistrust of the Muslim countries.
                      .
When I was younger, I used to believe in Santa Claus and the Easter bunny, until I found out they were only fables created by man.

The only way to learn is to believe some things we are told. If you never met Abe Lincoln, would you say he never existed? Actually little kids are able to have a close relationship with God before the age of 3. Yes, someone told me about the Trinity, but I also had to learn it for myself. You should question everything. And people make mistakes all the time causing great suffering in the world.
You don’t have to believe in God if you don’t want to, but He is always available if you want to. I cannot believe in Him for you. I had an encounter with Him this morning, but had to tell Him to stop because it was so overpowering, but sometimes I can’t seem to find Him, too, yet I know He is there. If you have time at some point, I would like to know what you believe in.

                    • Bunya July 7th, 2015 at 10:28

Abe Lincoln existed because history books are written about him. He was a man with no supernatural powers. Books were also written about Zeus, but I don’t believe he existed. The trinity doesn’t make sense to me, so I don’t believe it.
                      .
People make mistakes all the time, causing great suffering in the world – but so do hurricanes and tornadoes. People can control their mistakes, but not acts of nature. Why would your god punish good people by destroying their homes? More tornados happen in the bible belt that anywhere else.
                      .
I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but if you are hearing voices in your head, don’t believe they are necessarily from your god. George Bush heard voices in his head, too. He said God wanted him to invade Iraq and bring democracy to that country.

                    • Still Seeking July 7th, 2015 at 14:08

I don’t think Abe Lincoln existed because history books were written about him any more than God exists because books were written about Him, but Abe did have a close relationship with God. As far as the Trinity goes, there are a lot of things we don’t understand in this world, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Nature can be very heartless. God did not create her that way. This came after the fall. All creation is groaning at present, but we still have beauty everywhere to not lose hope.

I’m not hearing voices in my head. Yesterday morning I was just going about my morning chores and considering all the troubles in this world but still knowing that everything is in our Father’s hands and just prayed, “I love you, Abba.” He did not say this in words, but His Spirit fell upon me as if to say “I love you more”. The same as He loves you. You can ignore Him, or beat on His chest as hard as you want (I have at times), but that will never quench His love for you.

                    • Bunya July 7th, 2015 at 15:27

Abe Lincoln was president of the United States, therefore a record was made of his time in office. That is how we know he existed, and his religious beliefs are of no consequence.
                      .
“As far as the Trinity goes, there are a lot of things we don’t understand…”
Agreed, but if it doesn’t make sense, I question it. I just don’t buy the excuse, “we’re not supposed to understand it”. That’s the chicken’s excuse for explaining the unexplainable. I don’t know the ingredients in the polio vaccine, but I know it works, and that’s all the proof I need. Besides, I would think God would explain it to us exactly what he means, and not leave it to ancient prophets to give us their version of what he wants. For example; “Thou shalt not kill” is straightforward. There’s no mistaking what he means.
                      .
“God did not create her that way.”
So why doesn’t he fix it? Is he sitting up there thinking, “gee, I wish I could do something to save those innocent, church going people caught in that tornado, but my hands are tied.”? I thought he was omnipotent. BTW, it’s a little off-topic, but do you eat shellfish? How about pork? How do you explain the big shellfish and pork market? After all, it says in the bible that eating these are forbidden.
                      .
“I’m not hearing voices in my head.”
Well, when this spirit falls upon you and tells you to kill someone, don’t listen.

                    • Still Seeking July 7th, 2015 at 16:18

Who are you so angry with? It sounds like you are angry with God, or maybe yourself? Or maybe the devil?

                    • Bunya July 7th, 2015 at 16:38

I’m not angry. It’s a legitimate question. If God is omnipotent, if he can do ANYTHING, why does he allow bad things to happen to good people? Was God punishing the Iraqi mother when he allowed her child to be killed by a stray bullet? And I swear to you, I’m not being sarcastic. I really want to know. It’s easy to blame the devil, but if God supersedes the devil, I would think he’d do something to relieve the suffering.

                    • Still Seeking July 7th, 2015 at 18:37

That is probably the biggest question everyone holds in their hearts. There have been many attempts to answer it and I imagine the devil is laughing at God because His people haven’t come up with a good enough answer. But the devil will not get the last laugh. All I know is that God is suffering with us and has allowed this for a reason, but it is only temporary compared to eternity. For me, it has been a struggle, but I have learned through the struggle that it is enough to know He has promised to right all wrongs — nothing escapes Him and justice will come, even for the sparrow. A little hummingbird was screaming in our cat’s mouth and I rescued it, but it died anyway, probably from fright — the bible verse helped, but I did not hear from God at that time. Recently our baby horse died and I locked myself in the bathroom and wrote in my prayer journal asking God, “Where were you???!!!!!”, not really expecting an answer, but there was a faint knock on the door and I opened it thinking it was my husband, but no one was there. Of course, I can’t prove it was God and this is so minor compared to a mother losing a child. To say tragedies happen to bring out the good in people that rush to aid does not answer the question either, at least not for me, but it is proof that goodness will not die, or to say as the bible says “that it builds character and endurance and all that” doesn’t seem enough to me, either. We are fighting against principalities and powers in dark places — this is what we have been chosen for and because you know that things are not as they should be is because God has put that in your heart. You are not alone – others feel as you do. This world is not our home.

                    • Bunya July 2nd, 2015 at 11:06

BTW, did you know Allah, Yahweh and God are all the same? The only difference between the bible and the Qur’an is that there is only one Qur’an. You can even get a Jimmy Swaggart bible, however I’m sure his version states that it’s okay to have sex with prostitutes and farm animals.

So how exactly did God give this book to man? Did it just magically appear out of nowhere?

                  • Doug Bristow June 30th, 2015 at 11:11

The manuscripts were protected by God’s Holy Spirit and then compiled into a collective and under the Holy Spirit made into book form.

                    • Rhadakrishnan June 30th, 2015 at 11:18

And where did this take place? In the sky?

                    • tracey marie June 30th, 2015 at 12:26

Stp already with your mindless regurgitation of fables and myths, learn to think for yourself.

It appeared out of a lot of blood, sweat and tears and from our Father’s heart.

Because surgeons weren’t able to perform that kind of mutilation at that time, unless, maybe St. Paul did it supernaturally? I don’t know ..you got me.

            • Rhadakrishnan June 30th, 2015 at 09:38

All scripture was given by Emperor Constantine. Few Bible thumpers ever wonder how the Bible came into being in the first place. Did the hand of God come out of a cloud and give the book to Pat Robertson?

Who was it that decided which books made it into the Bible and which didn’t? And what was the criteria? Fundamentalists never stop to ask those fundamental questions.

              • Still Seeking June 30th, 2015 at 17:04

I don’t think you have heard of the Holy Spirit, or at least not experienced Him. You can if you truly want to, but it will cost you your whole life.

          • Larry Schmitt June 29th, 2015 at 19:29

Lots of different men, over hundreds of years, speaking several different languages. So mistranslations got compounded, and somehow someone decided to keep the archaic forms of verbs like “sayeth” and “goeth,” so the bible is the only place you’ll still find them.

The giraffe was having a hard time writing down what God said.

            • Bunya June 30th, 2015 at 23:46

Maybe it was the giraffe telling the men what to write. You know, like Son of Sam who took instructions from a dog.

              • Still Seeking July 1st, 2015 at 06:28

Good illustration – dog spelled backwards is God — good vs evil? except that dogs are not evil — they sometimes show a lot more compassion than we do.

Although the SCOTUS ruling make same sex marriage legal in the secular sense…..that has nothing to do with religious marriages, or those recognized by God. No preacher has to, nor should they have to disobey their belief. It does allow 2 gay people living together the same rights under the law as 2 straight people, when it comes to protecting their partners….and that is all it does.
