Movement To Get ‘God’ Off Coins Gaining Steam

Posted by | June 9, 2015 07:30 | Filed under: Politics Religion

Michael Newdow, know for attempts to get “under God” removed from the Pledge of Allegiance, is on a campaign to get “In God We Trust” off our currency. He’s basing his argument on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

“Under RFRA, religious activity may not be substantially burdened without a compelling governmental interest and laws narrowly tailored to serve that interest,” writes Newdow. “There is obviously no compelling government interest in having ‘In God We Trust’ on our money.”

Newdow further states that lawsuits are being prepared in seven federal circuits.

Initiatives to tackle “In God We Trust” on American money have usually rested on the Establishment Clause, a portion of the First Amendment that says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

Newdow argued for the removal of “In God We Trust” from American money in a 2013 lawsuit, citing a violation of the first amendment. U.S. District Judge Harold Baer, Jr., dismissed the lawsuit, writing that “the Supreme Court has repeatedly assumed the motto’s secular purpose and effect,” according to the Associated Press.

“Although the arguments demonstrating that the godly inscriptions violate the Establishment Clause will again be raised, the RFRA claim will (for the first time) be the lead argument in each case,” writes Newdow about the new lawsuits.

Good, it is a divisive and illegal phrase.

    • Markchoisucks June 9th, 2015 at 16:50

You’re a divisive and illegal phrase.

    • madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 19:55

Congress passed a law adding IGWT to money. Therefore it is not illegal.

The law was supported overwhelmingly by Democrats by the way. They must not have read that law either.

      • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 19:59

That was a politically correct vote. Doing otherwise would have the right wing nut jobs screaming ‘they voted against god!”.

Cleaning especially in a 2 story home burns lot’s of calories.

                      lol.

      • Jack E Raynbeau June 9th, 2015 at 21:41

In early 1950’s nobody would dare challenge it. That would have been like opposing the “Patriot” Act.

  2. Um Cara June 9th, 2015 at 07:59

Everyone needs a hobby, I suppose.

    • Names_Stan June 9th, 2015 at 19:40

Im a bit more cynical than you, and on a very different side of the issue from most here.

I suspect this guy gets paid by the far right to publicly threaten these petty things. Why? Because it’s a politically horrible strategy that will hurt the left terribly with centrists.

And centrists are the key to all elections.

This guy needs to go away and quit giving Faux News lunatics ammunition.

      • OldLefty June 9th, 2015 at 19:58

This is not a left right thing at all.

This has been a big issue with this guy for about 10 years.

As for “giving Faux News lunatics ammunition.”

Do you really think their little niche needs ammunition to compliment the Kenyan Usuper, Commie, homo gay take over, terror babies……

      • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 20:03

Newdow is no right winger. He’s a Atheist activist. The Separation of Church and State is not a ‘petty thing’.

        • Names_Stan June 10th, 2015 at 01:12

A bit dramatic in my opinion. Leaving words on a coin is far less important to me than the damage Republicans can and will do in the White House and in Congress.

I just think it’s tone deaf to play right into their hands.

  3. Glen June 9th, 2015 at 08:02

So it’ll just say “In We Trust”?

    • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 08:08

Well, The Flying Spaghetti Monster won’t fit.

      • Glen June 9th, 2015 at 08:13

        FSM would do.

        • Gert Brown June 9th, 2015 at 10:44

          ”In Weed Trust” might work.

      • madjayhawk June 13th, 2015 at 01:09

I am actually in favor of selling advertising space on the money so our taxes, for us that pay taxes, can be reduced. Someone even suggested that our beloved representatives in Congress wear NASCAR-like uniforms with donor’s names on them sized according to how much they donated. It is not like members of Congress have a lot of respect of the people.

  4. Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 08:14

When the Mint released some of the new coins, they wanted more space on both sides devoted to actual design, so they moved some of the inscriptions, including In God We Trust, to the edge. Some Chicken Littles were convinced that it was a liberal plot to take god out of whatever. So they started a Facebook campaign, and my sister posted it. I straightened her out real quick. I don’t think it will happen any time soon, because Congress controls the coin designs, and there are enough empty heads there who pander to their empty headed constituents, so it won’t go anywhere.

    • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 12:12

There was a few very early dollar coins that mistakenly didn’t have the slogan on the edge; it started a whole conspiracy meme going and it was (and maybe still) used for fund raising by right wing nut jobs.

      • madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 19:52

In 2011 the House vote was 396-9 to reaffirm IGWT as the national motto. Democrats obviously fully supported the idea.

Most people do not have a clue what other religious symbolism is on our money. They, as usual, just mindlessly mouth the old separation of church and state mantra that has nothing to do with why the symbolism is there in the first place. http://www.phil.frb.org/education/teachers/publications/symbols-on-american-money/

Now, 4 years later, apparently, judging by the hatred here for the phrase, Democrats are going to put the issue into their political platform as a major issue and demand that IGWT be removed from coinage, etc. That sounds like a good idea to me. Go for it.

        • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 19:54

Much like the vote back in the 50’s during the McCarthy hysteria, anyone who dared vote against ‘IGWT’ would immediately be branded as ‘voting against god’! The rabid right is vicious.

          • madjayhawk June 13th, 2015 at 01:03

Poor, spineless babies. Why don’t the Democrats make IGWT a big campaign issue and put it on their platform? You would support that right? The IGWT is a stupid issue to get worked up over.

  5. ExPFCWintergreen June 9th, 2015 at 09:09

The Wingers’ll freak, of course. But there is one strategy this cat hasn’t tried, yet. If there’s anything a Winger loves more than Jeebus, it’s fellating Corporate America and drowning Big Gubmint in a bathtub. He should just propose to eliminate the Mint altogether and have currency production subsidized by the MIC, Papa John’s Pizza, Koch Industries, and other big conservative donors, just like sports stadiums. So instead of, “That’ll be two dollars and fifty cents, ma’am,” we’ll hear, “That’ll be two Lockheed Dollars© and fifty Nikecents™, ma’am.” Corporations’d keep “god” off the currency because she’d keep getting in the way of their logos and catch-phrases, and you wouldn’t hear a peep from the Wingers because if there’s one thing conservatives won’t do, it’s tell corporations how to run their businesses.

    • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 09:18

That would just be replacing the current god with the republican god.

  6. cecilia June 9th, 2015 at 09:31

I know some people think this is frivolous as compared to to other things. And on a certain level it is – except that every time I see ‘god’ on my money I feel offended. And excluded. Am I NOT an American too?

I’ve spent years crossing out the god word on any money that crosses my path. I am making it legal.

  7. Foundryman June 9th, 2015 at 11:25

The thing that makes these lawsuits so hard to win is the fact the judges are afraid they will burn in hell for eternity if they rule in favor of the Constitution.

    • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 12:09

Or be overturned, which is, at least to some, an embarrassment.

  8. Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 12:14

We’d need a change in the Supremes first though. Hopefully, Hilary will get two appointments during her eight years in office.

    • madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 12:57

In her physical condition and advanced age she probably won’t live for another eight years.

      • Hirightnow June 9th, 2015 at 13:41

But unlike every Right-Wing candidate, her mental faculties aren’t suspect.

        • madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 19:29

I would be suspicious of anyone who sets up a private email server after telling their boss they wouldn’t do that and then erasing most of the information on it. Either doing something like that is brilliant or incredibly stupid. If she had something to hide, it would be criminally brilliant and if she didn’t have anything to hide it would be Forest Gump stupid.

          • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 19:52

Actually, it was rather clever. The State Dept. servers are much more likely to be hacked, and since she turned over all relevant e-mails, there’s nothing to hide and nothing criminal. Even internet security experts think she did right.

            • madjayhawk June 13th, 2015 at 00:59

What do you mean by ‘relevant emails’? Are you kidding me? That has to be a joke of some kind. HER STAFF decided which emails were relevant didn’t they? That is like a murderer deciding what evidence he will turn over to the police. What she should have done was turn over the servers to a third party and let them go through them (at a great, avoidable taxpayer expense) and determine which, if any, were State Department business and which weren’t. Why didn’t she do that? We know don’t we and we don’t have to be foaming-at-the-mouth conspiracy theory nutcakes to think that do we? We are talking about the Smartest Woman in the World here. You know, the same one who said “I do not recall” 56 times during a court proceeding.

      • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 14:35

“Advanced age?” How come no republican ever said that about St. Ronnie, and he was a lot older than Hillary? And what’s wrong with her physical condition?

      • tracey marie June 9th, 2015 at 14:50

old ronnie and mittens ring any bells.

      • Mike June 9th, 2015 at 16:38

I don’t know…she comes from some old stock…her mom made it to 92 and her grandmother made it to 94…
She’s doing fine and will probably outlive you.

        • madjayhawk June 13th, 2015 at 00:41

Tell that to her cardiologist. I will wait for her medical reports. I won’t hold my breath though.

      • William June 9th, 2015 at 17:42

Funny how age didn’t seem to be an issue with the right when the oval office was occupied by a senile “B” movie actor

        • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 18:05

To be fair to him, he didn’t get senile until halfway through his first term.

        • whatthe46 June 9th, 2015 at 19:47

that tickled hard. lol “my dementia…” that’s good.

      • Dwendt44 June 10th, 2015 at 13:50

With all the Teabaggers praying for her death, who knows. It hasn’t worked for Obama, he’s still doing fine. Of course, nothing fails like prayer.

  9. madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 12:51

We have 45 million people on food stamps and spend $74,000,000,000 a year on SNAP in this country and this guy is worried about 4 words on coins probably no more than 10 people in the entire country are ‘offended by’ or even are aware of it.

It soon will be worse to be ‘offended by’ words as innocuous as “In God We Trust” than it will be to smack someone in the face.

Since so many Democrats are against IGWT, they should have this as a major issue on their platform next year and ask their candidate to loudly speak out in favor of removing IGWT from the money and whatever. Maybe they could replace IGWT with FUA. That might make all those anti-Christian Democrats less ‘offended’.

I am really, really sure millions upon millions of people have been converted to some religion (a lot of religions believe in some sort of God) by those words.

    • whatthe46 June 9th, 2015 at 13:21

give yourself a break from yourself. please.

    • Hirightnow June 9th, 2015 at 13:39

Researchers have found that every $1 that is spent from SNAP results in $1.73 of economic activity.
      We’ve seen crocodile tears before.
As for your last sentence, millions upon millions have been forcibly converted(sometimes converted into corpses) when government and religion join as one…but you’d be OK, right? Because you believe in the One True God®, right?
How comfortable would you be if we put “All hail the Elder Gods” on your beloved money?

      • Mike June 9th, 2015 at 15:21

Not to mention that SNAP costs come to about a $1 a day for the average taxpayer. ($78 billion/200 million)
$1 dollar a day to feed hungry people and asshat republicans like madjayhawk think it’s too much. How effin cheap can you be…???

        • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 15:22

The right proves time and again that they only care about people before they’re born. After that, you’re on your own.

          • CandideThirtythree June 17th, 2015 at 08:10

They don’t really care for people then either, they just say they do so that they can make women’s lives miserable.

        • Hirightnow June 9th, 2015 at 16:23

We should start the rumor that poverty is sitting on top of vast oil fields….

          • Mike June 9th, 2015 at 16:34

Republicans will just create more poverty thinking they’re creating more oil.

        • madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 19:24

Math wasn’t your strong suit in school was it?

          • tracey marie June 9th, 2015 at 19:30

more angry trolling, take a break from being miserable.

            • whatthe46 June 9th, 2015 at 19:41

that made me laugh so hard. lol

            • CandideThirtythree June 17th, 2015 at 08:09

She has to practice to be that miserable! Get her tracy LOL

          • Mike June 10th, 2015 at 15:50

            78 billion/200 million = 390/365 = 1.06 dollars a day per taxpayer.

            I said about a dollar a day…

    • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 14:38

“I am really, really sure millions upon millions of people have been converted to some religion (a lot of religions believe in some sort of God) by those words.” I call BS on that. You’re pretty shallow if those four words can convince you to believe in god.

      • Jack E Raynbeau June 9th, 2015 at 17:57

I had a lady tell me that they wouldn’t put it on the coins if God didn’t exist.

        • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 18:06

That’s the kind of logic that says “If it’s in print, it’s true.”

          • Jack E Raynbeau June 9th, 2015 at 22:03

Yep. She was fond of the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

            • Iamnowhere June 9th, 2015 at 22:45

              Like the philosopher says …

              Know when to fold’em
              Know when to run

Not sure. I was dating her and she was trying to convert me to Mormonism. When she made her statement I hung up. Haven’t spoken to her since.

I know a guy who converted to Mormonism because he wanted to marry some Mormon chick. No joke, a few years later he went crazy and ended up in the loony bin and she took all his stuff and moved while he was in there. His parents claim she drove him crazy but I say he had to be crazy to begin with to convert and then marry her.

              You dodged a bullet buddy!

Just a bit of sarcasm. The “really, really” and the “millions upon millions” are a tip off. If by ‘you’ you mean me, that is ridiculous. No one, in my opinion, would have a I BELIEVE BROTHER moment while gazing on the words “In God We Trust”.. Most people wouldn’t be able to figure out what it meant. For example, who is that “We”. Someone have a mouse in their pocket? People who ‘Trust’ God could be setting themselves up for a lot of problems in their lives.

guess your kind should not have crashed the economy and started a war(s) that have cost us over 4 trillion not adding in the interest.

      • madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 19:17

What is my kind? Your post makes no sense whatsoever. I did not crash the economy. My kind didn’t either and it is not up to me to teach you history. The point is that you have no idea what ‘crashed’ the economy and are just ignorantly reading from some talking points you read somewhere.

Do you have one decent, well-thought out idea to contribute to the discussion or are you just a hate-filled person who wants to use the you-are-a-troll crap to try to shut me up?

            Quit stalking me.

    • interference June 9th, 2015 at 15:34

So are ” no more than ten people offended” or are “so many Democrats against IGWT?” Not sure what that has to do with SNAP but while we’re at it, we lose $50 billion a year b/c corporations put their monies into offshore accounts instead of paying their taxes like everyone else. Hmmm… wonder how we could pay for SNAP?

And anyway, you appear to be a “christian.” If that is true, why would you fight against helping poor people? Jesus said specifically to do help the poor. He didn’t mince his words.

      • madjayhawk June 9th, 2015 at 19:13

Where did I say I was a Christian? Where did I say that I supported having IGWT on money, toilet paper, or McDonald’s burger wrappers? Where did I say that I didn’t want to help the poor? You must of failed reading comprehension. You see a word and read meaning into it that is or is not there. I said, to be blunt,: IGWT is not a problem. 76 million folks getting food stamps is a problem (they do not have adequate incomes or, more than likely, jobs) . I did not condemn them personally for getting food stamps. Read what was actually said instead of going off on a hate-filled rant against someone you don’t know.

        • tracey marie June 9th, 2015 at 19:29

My apologies for offending you but please do go back over and read what you typed; it absolutely could be construed either way.

          • madjayhawk June 13th, 2015 at 00:33

I am not offended. I get annoyed with people who seem to want to stereotype everyone they come across. Stereotyping to me is one step above outright bigotry. It is hate. Those people seem want to play the stereotyping game rather than discuss issues. Like the post right after yours.

IGWT is a nothing issue. There are plenty of other issues in this country like the absolutely huge number of people that are on food stamps or are without jobs for example that are actually worth spending time and effort on. Democrats have, to me, sadly abandoned economic issues and are now totally focused on identity politics because their electoral success depends on whether they can get those who feel like society has wronged them somehow to vote for them.

Money, BTW, goes off shore legally in most cases for a reason – to avoid taxes or to get money out of a taxing authority’s jurisdiction. People, Democrats and Republicans, have done that for a long time – through Democratic and Republican administrations.

We need to elect someone who will do something about it and not just SAY they will do something about it. Politicians, believe it or not, will say just about anything to get elected then do nothing. Our tax code is a total mess and it was made that way by the clowns we have elected to Congress. A good article on off-shore money http://www.shelteroffshore.com/index.php/offshore/more/offshore-banking-illegal-immoral-11110 Read it and learn. Too many people resort to meaningless and ignorant slogans when it comes to offshore banking.

            • William June 13th, 2015 at 01:49

“I am not offended. I get annoyed with people who seem to want to stereotype everyone they come across”
Says the troll who wants to talk about food stamp recipients on a thread about engravings on coins.

            • interference June 19th, 2015 at 16:03

I beg to differ that IGWT is a non issue.

Unfortunately, it is part of a much bigger issue of christians and control in this country. Just like the abortion issue/a woman’s right to her own body; conservatives chip away, chip away until there’s nothing left.

Between tax free churches, the ten commandments planted in front of state capitals, IGWT on bills, people testifying in court with their hand on a bible (“so help me god,”), newly elected officials being sworn in on christian bibles, state and national religious exemption laws to discriminate, legislators openly pushing a god/christian-only agenda, students being suspended for not wanting to site the pledge of allegiance for refusing to say “one nation under god,” christian crosses on every veteran’s grave, active troops being threatened with their careers for not going to christian-led events, etc., this makes IGWT just one more quiet acceptance that one religion is the only true religion in this country. And it’s not.

Everyone works for a different cause and even though IGWT may not be one of yours, it doesn’t make it an unworthy cause.

As far as offshore banking goes, too many people are making too much money for anything to be done about it. Once offshore is no longer profitable, something MAY be done about it but only because other solutions for billionaires will have already been put in place. Thank you for the article, I will definitely give it a read.

              • madjayhawk June 19th, 2015 at 17:34

You can believe in God without being a Christian. Most religions have some sort of God figure that is important to them.

Christians do not have a monopoly on God. And just about every religion believes that their God is the only God and if you do not agree bad things might happen to you. When you say “Goddamn it”, with so many Gods out there, you might just get your wish.

Churches, synagogues, mosques, kivas, sweat lodges, Druid huts, foundations, etc should pay taxes on property and income. No one should be ‘tax free’ in my view. They all were made ‘tax free’ by politicians wanting to buy votes.

Personally I am more worried about those who used their religion to justify beheading non-believers than I do about those who go all in on 4 words on a coin.

A lot of things you complain about have come into practice over the 200+ year history of this country. They have become customs that the majority of people accept. Most hurt no one. Maybe there are so many crosses in military cemeteries because most of those buried there are Christians. Families have over 50 options when it comes to markers. The government does not force a particular marker on anyone. On your military record you have the opportunity to state what your religion is. No one forces you to. At least they didn’t when I served. The crosses, Stars of David, Muslim Crescent and Star, etc. on the graves are there for the families of the person lying there and if those crosses ‘offend’ someone I politely say ‘to hell with them’. There are at least 50 emblems of belief (including ‘none’) available for headstones provided by the government. I personally have seen probably 5 different types of crosses, Stars of David, Buddhist, None, and Muslim. I wasn’t offended by any of them.

                http://www.va.gov/vaforms/va/pdf/VA40-1330.pdf

There will always be some petty thing that someone will be ‘offended’ about. Good for them. One step away from being mentally ill. There are a lot of major things that I see that ‘offend’ me. I am morally offended by a lot of things going on (abortion for one, death penalty for another, lack of mental health facilities and care, forcing children to attend terrible schools when other alternatives are available, waste of tax payer money on entitlement programs designed to buy votes for politicians, waste of money in general, too much government regulation, a terrible tax system, a crappy judicial system that overwhelmingly punishes the poor, etc etc. etc.)

Well that is the way it sounds to me too and I am a retired teacher of English, there is nothing wrong with my comprehension. I agree with interference, it sounds mighty hateful and incongruous. You might want to look back over it.

          • madjayhawk June 19th, 2015 at 18:16

I would hate to have you as an English teacher. “It sounds mighty hateful and incongruous” That is silly. Liberal foaming at the mouth (lawsuits and posturing in the media) about IGWT accomplishes absolutely nothing constructive. If so, list a few substantial things that it does instead of trying indirectly to call me names.

Your comprehension skills are lacking There is nothing hateful or incongruous about anything I wrote. Do they teach reading between the lines and interpreting words based on preconceived wacko political ideas now in college?

The anti-IGWT clown’s time would be better spent working on substantial projects like getting people off of food stamps, etc. that actually mean something. The IGWT issue is a political piece of dung that the Democrats dung beetles are trying to roll into a ball.

            • CandideThirtythree June 19th, 2015 at 21:08

I can see how proud you are of your ignorance, how diligently you cultivate your stupidity and how invested you are in your hate and racism. You are a credit to your party indeed.

Could you please explain the connection between “In God we trust” imprinted on money, and food stamps?

      • Jack E Raynbeau June 9th, 2015 at 17:59

That’s easy. If people worked for money instead of getting food stamps, they would see “In God We Trust” and know that God wants them to keep working.

        Or something like that.

        • William June 9th, 2015 at 18:07

        Read this carefully.
        IGWT isn’t a problem PERIOD.
People who are in such bad financial condition – no jobs, no hope, no money – that they need government money to live on ARE a problem for this country wouldn’t you agree?
That clown running around wasting his time and the court’s time on such a trivial matter would be better off working just as hard at starting a business and hiring a few of those 76 million people so they could support themselves instead of living a life on handouts from the rest of us.

People who are in such bad financial condition – no jobs, no hope, no money – that they need government money to live on ARE a problem for this country wouldn’t you agree?

          _______

Actually, a 35 year economic system that has created the conditions where people need government money to live, especially when they have jobs and work hard IS a problem.

But that doesn’t mean that a secular nation should have “God” on it’s currency.

As for; “That clown running around wasting his time and the court’s time on such a trivial matter”

          ______

NO clown has wasted MORE time and produced MORE harm than David Bossie and Citizens United unless it was the Green Family.

And “Handouts from the rest of us”???
          He’s an ER doc.
This is why you guys are so screwed up.

          • madjayhawk June 19th, 2015 at 17:55

A quick heads up: “you guys’ is now a sexist, prohibited term. You must not have gotten the memo from the anti-male, Hillary wing of your party.

“People who are in such bad financial condition – no jobs, no hope, no money – that they need government money to live on ARE a problem for this country wouldn’t you agree?”

We no longer have those problems!!!!! Didn’t you get the memo?? Our President has solved all those things and everyone is now prosperous and well-off. Except for nearly 50 million on food stamps and 10’s of millions unemployed or underemployed. 50% of the school children in this country get free lunches. That’s really how well the country is doing. But instead of worrying about improving conditions so people can work and take care of themselves, liberals are foaming at the mouth about IGWT on money. Good work. Caring, thoughtful, and sensitive. That a Democrat for you. (that is sarcasm, in case you didn’t recognize it)

            • OldLefty June 19th, 2015 at 18:20

A quick heads up: “you guys’ is now a sexist, prohibited term. You must not have gotten the memo from the anti-male, Hillary wing of your party.
              _______

I don’t, nor do I know anybody who gets memos. Most Hillary supporters I know use the term frequently, and as a feminist, I have ALWAYS used it.

Our president has stopped the bleeding and has proposed many things, like the jobs bill but the corporate wing of both parties has a huge stranglehold on Congress.
It’s hard to pass the legislation to get people back to work, when the opposition is invested in a system that values money made from money over money made from hard work.
Unfortunately, after 35 years of Reaganomics, many more people needed that safety net, that number went up with the crash, and much of Big Business depends on the government safety to pad their profits.

        • William June 10th, 2015 at 08:02

People who are in such bad financial condition – no jobs, no hope, no money – that they need government money to live on ARE a problem for this country wouldn’t you agree?
          Yes I would.
Thank God we have a president who has cut the unemployment nearly in half, slashed the debt and bolstered the stock market to record highs.
          NOW.
Could you please get to the connection between a slogan printed on money and food stamps.
Yeah we get it, you hate poor people, however slogans on coinage have nothing to do with food stamps. Your rant about starting a business or whatever the F*ck you are babbling about has nothing to do with the issue.

          • madjayhawk June 19th, 2015 at 17:44

            Wait, you say

“People who are in such bad financial condition – no jobs, no hope, no money – that they need government money to live on ARE a problem for this country wouldn’t you agree?”

Then you say your president has solved all those problems. Which is it?

The President really didn’t solve anything. You should read something other than leftist propaganda. No, wait, better yet read both sides of the issues so you know what you are talking about. For example, what has the Fed done to fuel the latest stock market rise vs what the President has done. What has actually caused the economy to improve? Something the Fed has done or some the Obama has done or something the Saudis have done? You do know that the President does not control the Fed don’t you. I haven’t read ONE article listing significant things this President has done to improve economic conditions. I am sure you have a list from your MSNBC talking points that you could share.

            • OldLefty June 19th, 2015 at 17:58

The President really didn’t solve anything. You should read something other than leftist propaganda

              _______

              As opposed to Rightist propaganda?

Such as what has caused the decline in the middle class over the last 35 years?

              Why do you say MSNBC?

              1) You mean Joe Scarboro?

              2) Do you even know if the person you are talking to watches MSNBC?

Meanwhile, former Reagan aide Bruce Bartlett said, “Many
conservatives live in a bubble where they watch only Fox News on television, they listen only to conservative talk radio — Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, many of the same people,” Bartlett told CNN’s Brian Stelter on Sunday. “When they go
onto the Internet, they look at conservative websites like National Review, Newsmax, World Net Daily.”“And so, they are completely in a universe in which they are hearing the same exact ideas, the same arguments, the same limited amount of data repeated over and over and over again. And that’s brainwashing.”

    • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 19:57

10 people? Try 10 million or 30 million. It’s close to 20% of the population that are now ‘nones’. That’s how many claim NO affiliation to any organized religion. 9-12% are Atheists and Agnostics who are certainly offended.

      • CandideThirtythree June 17th, 2015 at 07:54

I am sure all of the other religions are not happy with it because it is understood to be the christian god and no other.

  11. Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 14:33

No one will ever explain to me so I understand why it matters so much to these people that these words are on the money. Does it change how they practice their faith? Does it convince anyone to believe? Is god that insecure that he needs to know we trust him? Most people don’t pay attention to it anyway. If it disappeared from all the money overnight, the money would still spend, and I guarantee god wouldn’t care.

  12. bpollen June 9th, 2015 at 14:35

Since it’s on money, might I suggest changing it to “In Mammon We Trust” for the sake of accuracy?

  13. Jeffrey Samuels June 9th, 2015 at 14:46

good grief. So it was put there in the 1950s because of the ‘communist’ hysteria. So it doesn’t hurt anything and lets face it, if it makes the religious conservatives feel good, then who cares. Like chicken soup, it may not be good for you, but it doesn’t hurt. let it be.

    • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 14:47

Yeah, never mind about that little thing called the constitution.

      • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 20:06

In fact, a case can be made that christians should want it removed too. Equating ‘god’ with filthy lucre is an affront to god, according to ‘real’ christians.
Of course, many of today’s christians aren’t real christians anyway.

    • tracey marie June 9th, 2015 at 14:51

1st amendment, the establishment clause…read it

    • Jeffrey Samuels June 9th, 2015 at 17:46

I have read it and I know a bit about the constitution. It just seems to me that after 60 odd years, it shouldn’t make a difference. Lets concentrate on things that are really affecting our country, not symbolic nit picking.

      • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 18:18

You’re right, it’s symbolic. Symbolic of what parts of the constitution the government is willing to uphold, like equal treatment and voting rights, and little stuff like that. If we can’t trust them with keeping god out of the government, how can we trust them with the big stuff? Symbols matter.

        • Jeffrey Samuels June 9th, 2015 at 18:31

true but we should pick our battles. This has been on our money for over 60 years, and unless they recall every bill and every coin, it will continue to be on our money for the foreseeable future regardless. I merely suggest we focus our efforts on the important issues. These symbolic ones will eventually take care of themselves.

          • Larry Schmitt June 9th, 2015 at 18:44

They don’t have to recall any bills or coins, just stop making new ones with the words in question.

            • Dwendt44 June 9th, 2015 at 19:42

The most common bill, the one dollar, doesn’t last long in circulation. Months, IIRC. With currency and coins being used less and less as electronic funds taking over, it may last a bit longer from here on. Still, an old illegal endorsement is still illegal. Get rid of it, make a few bible thumpers heads explode and be done with the nonsense.

            • Jeffrey Samuels June 9th, 2015 at 19:57

well fine. I am neutral on the actual subject, though I still think it is a waste of time. All I think it would accomplish is energizing a population of already paranoid fundamentalists, who will either cower in a corner waiting for the end of the world, or advocate violence in order to protect a way of life that never actually existed.

              • tracey marie June 9th, 2015 at 20:34

Why should we cower before the crazies?

                • Jeffrey Samuels June 10th, 2015 at 13:44

because we have more important issues to deal with? I don’t disagree about removing it from coins, but it seems like a minor nuisance to me, and it has been there for over 60 years already.

                  • tracey marie June 10th, 2015 at 14:04

                    • Jeffrey Samuels June 10th, 2015 at 14:44

YEAH, But it is so easy to get hung up on the small things at the expense of the larger. Listen, folks want to do this, I say go for it. As I said before, I am pretty neutral about it one way or another. I would support the change, but if it didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be distraught either.

          • CandideThirtythree June 17th, 2015 at 07:50

If it is only symbolic then why not take it off?

            • Jeffrey Samuels June 17th, 2015 at 08:05

I personally don’t care. Just saying that the effort involved to do this might not be worth the eventual result, especially considering how much money is out there already.

              • CandideThirtythree June 17th, 2015 at 08:47

that money can live out its lifespan and be rotated out just like they did with the state quarters. Just because they made quarters with states on them did not make the other quarters no spendable.

They spent WAY too much on that nonsense too…it costs money to change the dies but if they are willing to spend that much on 50 different dies, they should have no problem with make one that is at least not unconstitutional.

  15. Names_Stan June 10th, 2015 at 01:28

As I stated, the little niche doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is the little “nichers” leveraging news like this to say “see there, the left are extremists”.

Frankly I think it naive to say something “isn’t a left right thing” in our world. When right-wingers can turn “Happy Holidays” into a War of the Worlds, everything is political.

The 2016 presidential election will be fought in a handful of states, decided by a few handfuls of votes. This is the type of publicity that will be made into a “public service” PAC ad and will succeed in scaring the hell out of centrists.

Just my opinion. But if we see Dem candidates having to disavow this currency campaign, it will validate what I’m saying.

Of course they will disavow it. The Democrats success in elections depends on two things: minority turnout and public service unions. The unions are definitely motivated. The minority community will have to be.

With BO as the Democratic Candidate minorities had all the motivation in the world to vote. With an overweight, 67 year old, very rich white woman who lives in the past as a candidate, it might be hard to get minority voters excited unless the Democrats can come up with a good motivational issue to sell to them. I don’t know if “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” or “Black Lives Matter” will work for them as a voter motivator because Republicans have not been linked to the police brutality that I can make out. We will have to see. I see it as a problem. Another problem is that black voters although they do not vote Republican at all actually side with Republicans on a whole range of social issues and that might lead to lower voter turnout although that doesn’t seem to have happened in the past. Same with Hispanics. So Democrats have to overcome that issue if it is one. They probably will find a way and are lucky that Republicans are so incompetent. Hillary is going to have a big problem. Selecting a black vice presidential candidate might be the only way the Democrats can win. Some rich white guy won’t help them at all I don’t think.

I wish him luck but really he has no chance at all, the fundies will force their religion on us and tell us to like it as long as they outnumber us in the voting booth.
