O’Malley: Death Penalty ‘Ineffective’ For Tsarnaev

Posted by | May 16, 2015 09:00 | Filed under: Politics

Presidential hopeful Martin O’Malley is opposed to the death penalty, and that includes opposing it for Boston bombing convict Dzhokar Tsarnaev.

And while O’Malley said he “respect[s] the verdict of the jury” and said his prayers go to the victims and their loved ones, he used the occasion to affirm his strong opposition to use of the death penalty.

“The death penalty is ineffective as a deterrent,” he said, “and the appeals process is expensive and cruel to the surviving family members.”

And to really hammer home the point, O’Malley said that “the vast majority of public executions” happen in the U.S., North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and China; a list he said the U.S. should not be on.

By all metrics, Gov. O’Malley is correct. It costs all of us more to sentence someone to death than to sentence to life in prison. And the death sentence does not serve as a deterrent to capital crimes.

But we all know why the death proponents still insist on this punishment. Vengeance. And none of our “librul”, commonsense discussion matters a whit to this crowd.

So much for the myth of the conservative mastery of economics.

The entire prison/punishment/rehabilitation needs to be revamped, face it – we suck at this.

Unfortunately, we are very good at incarcerating people, better than anyone else, by percentage.

I know it’s been discussed here before, but the Nordics have found very successful methods of rehabilitation and are actually closing prisons.

But we can’t follow their lead, they’re socialists, and we’re Murca.

The same with education. Although they clearly have shown processes and policies that work, it’s just mind boggling.

and by total numbers in jail

You’re right. I thought China would top us in total numbers, since they’re four times our size, but we have 2.2 million, versus their 1.6. We’re no 1!

that is cause for celebration. something the right can be proud of especially since none of the 1% are in the pokey

Because the 1% don’t have to rely on public defenders. They can buy the best defense attorneys out there, and get probation, where a working stiff ends up doing years in prison.
