House Effort To Repeal Patriot Act

Two congressmen are behind the effort to repeal the Patriot Act.

Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) on Tuesday unveiled their Surveillance State Repeal Act, which would overhaul American spying powers unlike any other effort to reform the National Security Agency.

“This isn’t just tinkering around the edges,” Pocan said during a Capitol Hill briefing on the legislation. “This is a meaningful overhaul of the system, getting rid of essentially all parameters of the Patriot Act.”

The bill would completely repeal the Patriot Act, the sweeping national security law passed in the days after Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the 2008 FISA Amendments Act, another spying law that the NSA has used to justify collecting vast swaths of people’s communications through the Internet.

Haven’t had time to research the details but I for one agree wholeheartedly with this idea. The problem will be getting the NSA and all their shadow organizations to truly give up their power now that they have it.

Like you I also haven’t done the needed research to develop a strong stance in the issue, but I do know it is not conducive to a democracy when your government can listen to your conversations without a warrant.

I’m sure the NSA is monitoring those two Congressmen very closely. They will not take this effort lying down. Watch for a smear campaign to start or for inexplicable reasons the proposed legislation will be withdrawn, especially if it starts to get some traction.

What kills me, is that the government had all the tools they needed to stop 9/11, before it happened, with no Patriot Act. The agencies had grown complacent and lazy, so they didn’t bother to talk to one another about possible threats. They didn’t believe anyone could touch us. President Bush and Vice President Cheney used 9/11 as an excuse to grab unprecedented surveillance authority, over U.S. citizens. It’s way past time to undo the damage.

That’s one interpretation of why it happened, but am not sure it’s entirely true.

I may be ascribing motivations, or lack thereof, to the actors. But, the fact remains that the CIA knew there were possible terror suspects in the US and they didn’t alert the FBI to the true potential of the threat they posed.

And Bush was warned that terrorists were thinking of using airliners as weapons months before 9-11. He ignored it, and Rice excused it.

It’s very encouraging to see folks on both sides of the aisle working together to try and do the right thing (for once).

“a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.”

    That’s one definition of ‘Patriot’

The Patriot Act and the above definition are incongruous.

The right wing longs for a police state, Doing away with one of the best tools for such a situation isn’t going to happen. Watch and see.
