Restaurant Picks Up Tab For Vet On 92nd Birthday; Leaves Touching Note
Sometimes it sounds trite to say “thank you for your service,” but a local Outback restaurant did something about it.
Click here for reuse options!In an Opposing Views exclusive, a son tells us the story of how his 92-year-old father was recently honored by employees at a local restaurant on his birthday. Bob Nieman reached out to Opposing Views to share some photos from his elderly father’s birthday dinner and describe the amazing gift they received from the waitstaff.As Nieman explained in his message, his father, 92, is a World War II veteran and was a plank owner, or crewman, on the USS Lexington. On February 21, a total of four people, including Nieman and his father, decided to go out to what Nieman says was a local Outback restaurant to celebrate the elderly man’s birthday, and much to their surprise, the check came back completely covered by the server and/or restaurant.

Great story, I’m glad I’m a patron of Outback Steakhouse.
I’m also glad I’m a U.S. Navy Veteran. A plank owner is a sailor who is crew member who takes the ship out to sea on it’s maiden voyage. Owning a plank is a rare and honored distinction. I would love to know the ship ID.

The ship ID? The story says the Lexington and the man is a World War II vet. We had 2 carriers named the Lexington. The first was sunk at the Battle of Coral Sea. At the time we had some other carriers being built and one of them was named Lexington, as I recall.
This was a marvelous gesture and a day-brightener.

Well, Choad, I did a quick search and the first aircraft carrier named Lexington and it was CV-2.

That is very cool, best wishes for the young gentleman on his ninety second and thanks for his service. Mr. Nieman served on the Lexington during WW2. Awesome!
