A Year In Jail For Atheism

I wonder how many fundamentalists would like this to happen in America.

Sherif Gaber, 22, was recently sentenced to one year in jail by an Egyptian court for supporting atheism and creating an atheist Facebook page.

Gaber was a student at Suez Canal University in 2013 when his fellow students and a teacher snitched on him via a petition to the university’s then-president Mohamed Mohamedein.

Mohamedein turned Gaber into local authorities for contempt of religion, which he was convicted for on Monday.

The judge in the case said Gaber could avoid jail for now if he paid a bail equivalent to about $130 dollars.

While he is out of jail for now, Gaber faces a retrial that could put him in prison for over two years.

And of course, Egypt and many other Muslim theocracies, in addition to Israel, which is a theocracy lite, are our allies, and recipients of billions of our aid dollars.

Mainly because christians in this country see them as pawns in their great game of religious checkers in the “holy” land.

And, I’m sure purely as a coincidence, there’s a butt-load of oil in that neighborhood. Like I say, purely coincidence. Purely.

at least he’s not being jailed & whipped by the Saudi’s for unrelated reasons. You could say Egypt is more of a humane country

Yes, they’re less severe in their irrational treatment of people who don’t believe in the officially accepted way.

I just saw an article this morning about a Saudi woman who was gang-raped. SHE was sentenced to jail plus 200 lashes. The Saudis are our good buddies in the region. It makes me sick.

They take the same view of women as the bible does.

      • jybarz March 7th, 2015 at 19:41

They hate women just like the GOP does.

good political buddies maybe but take a public poll after you post the sh!t they pull on their citizens and you will have a huge different answer

Next time you hear an American evangelical preacher spew hate on non believers, remember this.

Did either woman actually kill people? That would be a difference.

Give it time. Keep electing screwballs like Perry and Santorum over the more sane among us and pretty soon we’ll have gays, Muslims and Atheist jailed. and women who’ve had miscarriages accused of intentionally “killing” her fetus. Not only that, but we’ll be holding court sessions under water because global warming was a “hoax”.

I believe your prediction. So help the U.S. God.

They’re afraid people will wake up and prove their religion can be wrong on many things.

At first I thought the story might be from Oklahoma but nope, a different fundie theocracy.

    • Ronald L March 8th, 2015 at 00:08

I am quick to criticize Oklahoma but I don’t think they jail atheists… yet!

I can’t ever remember not believing in God.

I don’t take any pride or shame in this. It think it’s how my brain is wired.

I suspect that many atheists are just the flip version of me. They don’t believe in God because, well, they aren’t wired that way.

the story gets confusing when its said you must except jesus as your savior then it goes onto say jesus looks just like god.
      I hope this helps

If you are/were like most believers, you were taught that belief while you were still in diapers. You were allowed to believe in the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus, and Jesus/god. As you grew, you realized that the first three were make believe, even though, for a time, they were supported by a quarter under your pillow when you lost a tooth; you got an Easter basket and presents under the tree at Christmas. You were allowed to dismiss them. Jesus/god on the other hand, was different. Your belief was continually reinforced by mandatory church, Sunday School, and Christmas pageants, family prayer sessions, etc…

“I wonder how many fundamentalists would like this to happen in America.”

We already have had this happen in America. An Atheist was sentenced to jail because he refused to take part in some program that has a strong fundamentalist background and forces people to convert. Since this person was an Atheist, he was sent to jail instead by the judge.
