Red States Scrambling To Preserve Obamacare

Posted by | February 28, 2015 21:00 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

Republicans in these states realize that if the Supreme Court rules against the Affordable Care Act, their citizens will be in very bad shape, with no subsidies for health care coverage.

The justices hear arguments about the matter next week. If the court sides with the plaintiffs, who argue that subsidies are not allowed in the 34 states that opted against setting up their own insurance marketplaces, the ruling could spark an immediate crisis. People could see their insurance bills skyrocket and be forced to abruptly cancel their coverage.

At least six states where Republican leaders had previously refused to set up state marketplaces under the Affordable Care Act are now considering what steps they might take to preserve the subsidies being paid to their residents.

Efforts to hold on to the subsidies are under consideration even in South Carolina, which supported the challenge now before the Supreme Court. Gov. Nikki Haley (R) said in an interview that South Carolina may consider setting up a marketplace, though it is unclear how such a proposal would fare in the staunchly conservative state.

“We’re going to start in this next week working on some things statewide,” said Haley, who says she still opposes setting up an exchange.

But, of course, if Haley and other Republicans hadn’t resisted in the first place, they wouldn’t be rushing now to make sure they don’t face furious constituents.

Complaining about the ACA for 6 years…………..stupid
Scrambling to replace it if it goes down………PRICELESS

The truth is expensive in this case. They are starting to think beyond talking points….this will be a tough pill to swallow for most of them. Hopefully something positive like a “wake up call” will occur….

      • fahvel March 1st, 2015 at 03:16

or they may simply choke on the big pill.

        • bluejayray March 1st, 2015 at 11:46

Even better. I’m just plum out of patience any more. We’ve got a country to run, and they are playing checkers with our lives.

You’re giving them too much credit.

Nah that was the Anti ACA sheriff that is on line begging because he can’t meet his medical bills

        Heartwarming story, that one…

  3. rg9rts March 1st, 2015 at 04:26

Red states caring about those in need??? Not likely…

    • Suzanne McFly March 1st, 2015 at 09:04

The right doesn’t care about those in need but they do care about the poor constituents who vote against their own welfare by voting for the right and by taking these subsidies out of these voters hands, they will realize how voting for the republican party has actually hurt them.

Sort of amazes me that women would marry one of them…

        • bluejayray March 1st, 2015 at 11:43

          …or BE one…

        • Suzanne McFly March 1st, 2015 at 13:14

I think the women believe they will have more of a choice of men since there is less females on that side of the fence. All a female has to do for them is show a little cleavage and some leg, these men will follow them anywhere for life.

          • rg9rts March 1st, 2015 at 13:31

ROTFLMAO….A lot of men will do that!

So they “previously refused to set up state marketplaces” for subsidized healthcare coverage for their citizens.
In other words, their irrational hate for a black President caused them to make foolish decisions that are now coming to light and they realize the electoral consequences for their own stupidity.

Reminds me of the kid who sulked and refused dessert, then cried because all the ice cream was gone.

I live in one of those states. Thankfully we have a new governor now who is looking into expanding medicaid and setting up a state exchange.

Now the GOP realizes they bit off more than they can chew, they have NO altermative plan for the people,
they want us on the GOP health plan that
protects profits–(1)go to the gutter and lay
down, (2)be sure you are not too far out so as
not to get hit by traffic, (3)be sure the
rendering truck driver can still see you,
    (4)die.
also consider the alternative GOP plan–get a
second/third/fourth job, the GOP says you only
have yourself to blame for being poor, and if
you vote for them then you agree.

    • bluejayray March 1st, 2015 at 11:38

You’d think that they’d be tickled pink with the subsidies. It’s the biggest giveaway to the insurance and pharmaceutical industry EVER. I can’t believe what a crappy bronze plan goes for considering how little it pays.

      • Cynthia Ratzke March 1st, 2015 at 14:40

Once you meet the ACA annual limit on your policy, which includes your deductible, co-pays and out-of pocket expense combined, everything is paid for by the insurance company. There is no monetary annual payout limit the insurance company can place on your claim. You will not see this advantage until you suffer serious injury or illness.

        • bluejayray March 2nd, 2015 at 14:21

Thanks for all the schoolin–but I DO know how it works. For what it costs, it is outrageous. The only reason I have it at all is that I am poor enough (but not TOO poor..)to be fully subsidized and would actually have to pay a fine without it. It doesn’t cover anything that I actually need–like dental and vision. Fortunately I can apply for Medicare next year. What we need is to get the insurance companies OUT of it completely. They serve no purpose other than to make money for themselves. We need a single-payer plan–like just about every other industrialized nation on the planet.
We also need to take a serious look at our ENTIRE health care system–including changing what we eat instead of reaching for an expensive prescription for self-inflicted illnesses like heart burn, obesity and the health problems that come from them.

No matter what Scotus rules on this case you know The Obama will be blamed.

  8. gailillly March 1st, 2015 at 21:17

i CAN’T STAND THAT NIKKI HEALEY, SHE IS THE REASON THE PEOPLE OF HER STATE AR WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE. SHE IS A PIG.

  9. viva_democracy March 1st, 2015 at 21:30

I hate to see anyone without health care, but I would enjoy seeing these derps have to explain to people why their health care costs are either going up or being taken away. Watch them squirm. But at the end of the day, the very sad part is these same people that depend on the ACA are the same people who keep voting these derps into office.

Hey low income people, republicans think you should be spending $6000 to $10,000 per year for healthcare.
