Republicans’ ‘New’ Obamacare Alternative Is Cut And Paste Job
What Republicans claimed was their “new” idea to replace Obamacare was recycled from previous, non-starter proposals.
Robert Pear of The New York Times reported that the plan was “drafted with encouragement from Republican leaders,” “devised” by Hatch, Burr and Upton, and included a “potentially explosive proposal.” Pear reported that “Republicans said the need for such an alternative had become more urgent.”
But Caroline Behringer, the eagle-eyed press secretary for Democrats on the House Ways & Means committee, was suspicious that this “urgent” and “explosive” new proposal had just been “devised.” So she did some sleuthing and discovered that the Republicans had lifted the thing — right down to quotes in the news release — from the rollout of the same proposal a year earlier.

Of course, we all know the Republican Party’s position on health care reform:
Phase 1 — kill the current legislation.
Phase 2 — Status quo. Do nothing.
The Congressional Republican version of health care insurance reform continues to be the equivalent of vaporware. Long on nebulous generalizations laden with party ideology, short on substance and specifics.
Even so, the GOP’s plan is better … if you never get sick or injured, if you are extremely wealthy, or if you have a major financial stake in the private health insurance industry.

My own unofficial barometer of the success of the ACA is based on lurking in right wing forums viewing the comments over the past few years.
The metamorphosis is quite telling. They started with shrieks about death panels, jack-booted IRS thugs kicking down doors, creeping socialism, job-killing and euthanizing the elderly. In recent months the comments are more along the lines of well duh the lazy 47% are getting another handout. Oh there is the occasional sarcasm about the President’s ill conceived remarks about keeping your plan. There are also those who persist in either taking out of context or lying altogether about Nancy Pelosi’s speech at the 2010 Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties (NACo).
But overall, even the most hysterical critics cannot avoid the plain truth. The ACA is working, doing exactly what was intended. All that is left is for them to recycle gripes about “takers” and hope for repeal. Of course if the ACA was somehow repealed, what would that accomplish?
Repeal and the ensuing joy on the right, would simply confirm that all of their professed angst about people losing coverage was just another steaming pile of bullcrap.
