Pope Will Address Joint Session Of Congress

Unlike the Netanyahu appearance, this one might do some good if they actually listen to him.

The pontiff will visit the U.S. Capitol on September 24 during a scheduled visit to the United States, which will be the first time a Pope has ever been invited to speak before Congress. His visit comes days after he is scheduled to visit the White House and deliver a mass at the Washington National Cathedral.

I like this Pope just fine, but I’m not sure I’m completely comfortable with the precedence this sets.

The pope agrees with me that an occasional spanking by a loving parent does not screw a kid up for life. Our own kids (yours and mine) are testament to that. The pope says “Relax. You did fine.”. :-)

The Pope still thinks birth control is wrong, so you’ll have to forgive me if I maintain that spanking your child is wrong.

A head of state speaking to congress? Why would that be a bad precedence?

      • Carla Akins February 7th, 2015 at 11:17

He’s the head of the Catholic church and not meeting with Congress as such, not as a head of state.
What happens when David Miscavige buys an island, claims himself the head of state and wants to meet with Congress.

        • arc99 February 7th, 2015 at 11:51

Then Mr. Miscavige would go through the usual channels at the State Dept and the United Nations to have his island recognized as a sovereign nation by both organizations.

The phrase “snowball’s chance” comes to mind.

I’m not sure comparing The Vatican to an island some guy purchases is a reasonable comparison, but I appreciate the reply.

This visit does not set a precedence. The Pope is a Head of State of Vatican city. Thus he is qualified as such to speak before Congress. Here is a link for you on this matter. http://www.vaticanstate.va/content/vaticanstate/en/stato-e-governo.html

I want to hear about what the Vatican saw with it’s telescope! Is it aliens or a big rock?

This would be something to see, especially afterwards when the professional haters on the right and a few on the other side start to rant.

Pope Francis is from Latin America. I’m sure one of the rabid right-wing nutjobs will try to arrest him as an illegal alien.
