49 GOP Senators: Climate Change Not Caused By Humans

As the Senate prepares to vote on the Keystone pipeline, yesterday they voted on several amendments to the bill.  First they voted 98-1 to acknowledge that climate change was real (Roger Wicker R-MS in case you were wondering).  Then came the vote on whether it was caused by human action:

The final climate amendment, introduced by the Hawaii Democrat Brian Schatz, went further, stating: “human activity significantly contributes to climate change.”

Only five Republicans supported it – Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Susan Collins of Maine and Mark Kirk of Illinois.

Rand Paul of Kentucky, Marco Rubio of Florida, and Ted Cruz of Texas – all thought of as leading Republican contenders for the 2016 presidential race – voted against. The bill was defeated 50-49.

Money quote from Senator James Inhofe (R-OK)(pictured),

“Climate is changing and climate has always changed and always will,” Inhofe told the Senate. “The hoax is that there are some people who are so arrogant to think they are so powerful they can change climate. Man can’t change climate.”

The hoax is that Sen Inhofe mixed some individuals with mankind as a whole. I and my friends cannot change the climate but billions of us in an industrial society sure can and have.

“The Brightest and The Best” eh?
Even if it is not (for the sake of argument) caused by humans we can do something about it before as the Joint Chiefs have suggested wars over water and crops become our next major battles.

      • Dwendt44 January 22nd, 2015 at 17:57

At the same time polluting what water we do have at every opportunity

          Flaming tap water anyone?

          • bpollen January 23rd, 2015 at 02:27

I like a hot shower, but DAMN!

Polluted groundwater is one of the most easily understandable problems with fracking, but not anywhere near the most dangerous.

The fact that humans warm the planet when we emit CO₂ was established over 100 years ago:

“In January 1859, Tyndall began studying the radiative properties of various gases… Tyndall’s experiments… showed that molecules of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and ozone are the best absorbers of heat radiation”

              earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/Tyndall

Why anyone would willingly select someone so clearly divorced from reality to represent her is beyond me.

The Republican party is deep in the grips of suicidal madness.

The real hoax is that this know-nothing is now the chairman of the senate environmental committee. How much damage can he do? And I’m sure he’s in the pocket of the American Petroleum Council. Or they’re in his pocket, however you want to look at it. They will both profit hugely.

Bad news, they aced the “I am an ultimate idiot” test.

Inhofe as the head of this committee is as much of a farce as Michelle Bachman sitting on their ‘Intelligence’ committee…. (puhleeze!!!) These are the same people who flatly state that ‘Gawd’ wouldn’t ALLOW us to soil our ditty. I’d love to see a test of that faith… say a prayer for protection and then step into traffic!

How is it that satellite data has shown no warming, or very minimal warming since 2000? Could it be that thermometers are a horrible way to measure the temperature, considering most are located in urban areas?

Did I say stopped? But it begs the question, if CO2 is driving up temps, why has there been a pause? You cannot have causation without a correlation.

          • OldLefty January 23rd, 2015 at 08:01

            There has?
Doesn’t one look at the long term trend over the jagged line?

          • mea_mark January 23rd, 2015 at 10:43

The waters of the ocean are absorbing the heat and global ice is melting. We have been measuring air temp more than water temp.

      • Obewon January 23rd, 2015 at 08:06

Q: Does satellite data show the atmosphere isn’t warming?

A: No. Early analyses of satellite data by one group in Alabama did suggest that there was little or no warming in the layer of atmosphere just above the surface (the troposphere). It turned out that there were several serious errors made in the analyses of those data. When those errors were corrected, warming above the surface turned out to be similar to the warming at the surface, just as climate models predicted and in line with expectations based on physics. http://www.climatecommunication.org/questions/satellite-data/#sthash.EAFIK8oe.dpuf

Even G W Bush & Mitt Romney Acknowledged That Climate Change Is Real And Human-Induced!

The conservative Republican’s mind is a scary place. Exhibit A — their “sh*t happens” rationalization regarding global warming and climate change trends:

“Global warming is a fallacy. My evidence? It snowed today in Alaska.

Of course, if it is real, it has nothing to do with carbon-based gas emissions. My 4th grade science teacher told me so.

But then, if carbon gases are responsible, it has nothing to do with human activity — it’s totally natural, like plastic.

However, if it turns out that global climate change is the result of manmade carbon-based gas emissions, well, it’s God’s will. Therefore, only He can do anything about it.”

And in any case, an increase in average global temperature really isn’t all that bad — after all, you’ll be able to wear tank tops and shorts in January.

    • Larry Schmitt January 23rd, 2015 at 16:10

That sounds exactly like what every “climate expert” on Fox Not News has said in the last five years.
