Sam Warde has the story.

Thursday’s announcement includes:

  • Calling on Congress, as well as States and cities, to pass legislation that would allow millions of working Americans to earn up to seven days of paid sick time per year;
  • Proposing more than $2 billion in new funds to encourage states to develop paid family and medical leave programs and announcing that the Department of Labor will use $1 million in existing funds to help States and municipalities conduct feasibility studies; and
  • Modernizing the Federal workplace by signing a Presidential Memorandum directing agencies to advance up to six weeks of paid sick leave for parents with a new child and calling on Congress to pass legislation giving federal employees an additional six weeks of paid parental leave.

Any paid sick leave should require a note from a physician. Otherwise the abuse is going to be rampant.

    • Budda January 17th, 2015 at 08:14

Yeah, like everyone has a doctor on call.

    • Carla Akins January 17th, 2015 at 09:17

      Rampant? It’s 7 days.

    • mea_mark January 17th, 2015 at 09:26

That way the poor without doctors have to work while sick. Good way to promote inequality, if that is what you are into, beating down the poor some more.

      • Not Mother January 17th, 2015 at 11:49

        But Obamacare!!

        • tracey marie January 17th, 2015 at 12:15

do you have a point besides stupid?

          • whatthe46 January 17th, 2015 at 18:30

it won’t answer, you’ve just caused it to slip into a coma.

        • mea_mark January 17th, 2015 at 12:20

If only medicaid was expanded everywhere, but no, the republicans aren’t doing that. Many poor still fall through the big gaps.

          • Not Mother January 17th, 2015 at 12:59

Then maybe you should help them. Give up 25% of your paycheck and start donating.

    • William January 17th, 2015 at 09:35

Good idea. Everyone who suspects they have a cold/flu should require that their family physician clear a spot immediately and diagnose said cold/flu and write a note…
      OR
Everyone who suspects illness should show up at the emergency room to have their cold/flu diagnosed, and documented.

      • Not Mother January 17th, 2015 at 11:51

If you go to the ED for a cold, you’re an idiot.

But, I get it, you’re OK with people scamming their employers out of money. Cool.

        • William January 17th, 2015 at 12:04

“If you go to the ED for a cold, you’re an idiot.”. Then how does one get the note you insist they get?
You just contradicted your own statement. You call for a note yet you call someone an idiot for getting one.
I worked at a place for 8 years and although I had sick days I never took one. My employer hired people based on a certain standard of integrity and honesty.
I suppose if you live in a world where you think everyone is on the take, and poised to steal, your contention is valid.
I don’t live in that sort of world, and I feel sorry for those who are imprisoned by that mindset.
(pssssst, I think your neighbor might be stealing your internet)

            Reading comprehension is key.

Get a note from your primary care, or even urgent care. Not the ED.

            Do you know the difference?

            • William January 17th, 2015 at 12:11

Urgent care is ED, and just how long will it take to get an appointment for that note?
              (stop backpeddling)

              • Not Mother January 17th, 2015 at 13:02

Urgent care is NOT the ED.

If you don’t even know the difference between the two, then I cannot help you.

            • William January 17th, 2015 at 12:12

Dear employer. My patient George asked me for a note for the flu he had last week. He seems well enough to return to work now, where do I send the bill for this visit?

              • Not Mother January 17th, 2015 at 13:01

                To his insurance company.

            • William January 17th, 2015 at 12:17

I don’t actually expect you to understand the consequences of a person with influenza sitting in a crowded waiting room, infecting others just to satisfy your idiotic right wing view, but try to consider the expense.

              • Not Mother January 17th, 2015 at 13:00

No, you’re right. A person with the flu should never seek medical help.

                Ha.

You are not allowed to be sick in Corporate America. So do as I do and go to work sick as a dog. It spreads the joy.

I’m nonplussed by this. It’s not that I’m against it, it’s just so far outside my experience it could be about aliens on Mars. In a near half century of working for a living, I had a week’s paid vacation once but to my knowledge I’ve never even been offered a paid sick
day. Like the song says, “Union man he tells me the same thing, he don’t work and he don’t get paid”.

    • whatthe46 January 17th, 2015 at 18:24

i’ve received paid sick from my employers. some employers allow them to accumulate.
