GOP Civil War

It looks like, having dodged the bullet and won his third term as Speaker of the House, John Boehner is going to be doing some House cleaning. And on the short list of clutter to be marginalized are the hardcore Tea Baggers who tried to oust him on inauguration day. I’m half-heartedly cheering for John Boehner…

Part of the reason they’re are no longer needed is that too many dems will vote

w/boehner witness the vote on the XL pipeline this week

That is a sad list, I see why some voted for this bill (red states), but the rest better figure out how they will be re-elected.

Personally, I’d like to see more dissent w/in the ranks of both sides. This lock/stock/barrel approach in our congress does a disservice to the american voter. Right now, majority/minority leaders have all the say so, the others better vote as told by them, not the folks back home. Toooooo much power in the hands of the few.
Now, if there was independent thinking/voting going on cause of representing folks back home, coalitions would once again have to happen and things would get passed or not passed because of what people want, not one party.
And, members wouldn’t be ‘afraid’ of losing positions on committees because they’d have them due to expertise again, not because they vote 99% in line w/how they are told to by the ‘leaders’, since everyone would have some ‘against the leader’ votes.
Oh yea, it used to be that way and it worked for scores of years…

Congress has never been subject to democracy.

If you ever get really bored and want something to do, take any year prior to say 1970. Then, pick a law that was passed in that year, and read the senate or the house log on the debate and the vote record… do that going back every 5-7 years or so… just random laws & years.
I think many would be surprised at how much really has changed in just a few decades back.
It is very simular, in my view, to today’s conventions… everything is so controlled and choreographed and known now, esp the vp aspect.
Do the same thing w/them, watch films of the conventions from the 80’s on back, then read archived papers’ accounts b4 film… nothing in common.

More floor debate then, true. There was a wider range of political difference then with more local representation by the Congress. But, party discipline in floor votes was secured in doling out pork. Boehner doesn’t have that now, only committee assignments to keep the more extreme of his right wing party in line.

Too much money in politics. America needs election reform.

      • Spirit of America January 11th, 2015 at 10:43

Oh big time. I think this would be a good, simple and common sense start:
        1. Only individual citizens can donate to a campaign.(no companies, unions, groups, pacs, etc, only individuals)
        2. Set a cap per campaign for donation, including the candidate’s own contribution.
        3. One can donate only to a candidate that one is in their jurisdiction.

        • mea_mark January 11th, 2015 at 11:19

I don’t agree with #3, but limits might be appropriate.

          • Spirit of America January 11th, 2015 at 11:46

My feelings on #3 are since they are to represent who can vote them, they should only get money from that pool as well. If I can donate to john doe from some other, why can’t I also vote for him?

I’ve seen many even on this forum say how the rich folks donate/buy elections in many states… that would put an end to that.

            • mea_mark January 11th, 2015 at 12:50

I see it as helping out a candidate, that I really like, in a local election that I can’t vote in, so that maybe someday they can rise to a level where I can then vote on them.

Abraxax is not a parody, it IS a fun movie though.
“An alien “policeman” arrives on Earth to apprehend a renegade of his own

“It starts with Daniel Webster; the Florida freshman who was part of the 2010 wave of Tea Party crackpots. Webster made the decision to try to unseat Boehner a few days ago, trying to work around Boehner’s back to get votes against him. Prior to this, Webster had been given campaign funds from a PAC that Boehner led, and had been award a prized position on the House Rules Committee.”

You have to crawl before you can walk. Here we have newbies who have no power trying to exert power over Boehner. That’s akin to a freshman in high school wanting to over throw the principle because he doesn’t like how he performs his dutie
