Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell Sentenced To Two Years In Prison

Posted by | January 6, 2015 16:00 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

Prosecutors wanted 10 years, but the judge said two was enough.

U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer said he was moved by the outpouring of support for McDonnell, though he could not ignore the jury’s verdict.

“A price must be paid,” Spencer said. “Unlike Pontius Pilate, I can’t wash my hands of it all. A meaningful sentence must be imposed.”

The penalty is a win for defense attorneys, who had asked that the former governor be sentenced to mere community service even as prosecutors advocated for a prison term stretching longer than a decade. McDonnell will likely spend less time behind bars than he spent holding the state’s highest office; he can reduce his sentence by about 15 percent with good behavior…

Though McDonnell (R) will certainly appeal his conviction, the sentence brings to a close a stunning narrative of politics, greed and family drama that reached a climax in September when McDonnell, 60, and his wife, Maureen, were convicted of public corruption. A jury found unanimously that the couple used the governor’s office to help a wealthy dietary supplement company executive advance his business interests, and in exchange, the businessman gave the McDonnells $177,000 in loans, gifts and luxury goods.

The businessman, Jonnie R. Williams Sr., testified against the McDonnells at trial in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Maureen McDonnell is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 20.

That pissed me off too, he made that reference to associate himself and these crooks with the person who killed Jesus? WTF does that self-created association have to do with this case? I think it is just another right wing dog whistle that they have decided to use to associate this crook with Jesus so the idiot religious right nutjobs will vote for him again in 2 years.

2 Years? At a Club-Fed? When the recommended minimum is 6.5 years. Sure sounds like White People “justice” to me. The judge could probably see himself…

I doubt this even makes a ripple, but it should scare the hell out of those currently in office reaping the rewards from their (cough couch) associations. (can you hear me Christie!)

I bet she will get more time than he did. So many don’t like this woman and many see her as a “B” who took advantage of her idiot husband so she can live a life she dreamed of. I never seen a gun being held to the governors head and he seemed complicit in the all of these “deals”, but he will be electable in 2 years if she is his escape goat.

My guess is that Mo was awfully good at “withholding certain marital favors” until Bob gave her whatever she wanted. Now, if only he has strength remaining for the same in prison.

One good thing about McDonnell’s conviction is he will have to serve the full sentence under federal guidelines.

He used up every last political favor he held for that light sentence. I wonder how close the Cuch is to this judge?
