Michelle Bachmann Said If She Were President Gas Prices Would Be Under $2; Now She’s Taking Credit

Posted by | January 4, 2015 18:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

There are any number of things that have caused the recent dip in oil prices; a flooded market, OPEC internecine price-warfare, and a low global demand are on the top of the list. Nowhere on that list, however, is outgoing Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann. But nobody tell Bachmann that. I doubt she’ll listen. Bachmann took to…

Time magazine editor Bryan Walsh Told us $Bachmann’s $2 gas promise was a fantasy and if Gas gets below $2 everybody should stock up on canned tuna and bottled water because end times were near. . http://science.time.com/2011/08/18/why-michele-bachmanns-2-a-gallon-gas-promise-is-a-fantasy/ Bachmann was right. Increased US oil production has caused the Saudi’s to dump oil on the world market in to bring prices down enough to make US production unprofitable and shut down. (just like they did in the 1980’s) Walsh claimed increasing supply would result in a .03 cent a gallon decrease at the pump. Gas in the detroit area was as low as $1.68 today The president had repeatedly said we can’t drill our way to low gas prices. Once again you guys were. wrong MASSIVELY WRONG Frack Baby Frack

    • Carla Akins January 4th, 2015 at 18:45

Cheap gas is great, but it has nothing to do with Bachmann. I’d prefer to have adequate clean water to sustain life. You can keep your fracking.

“if Gas gets below $2 everybody should stock up on canned tuna and bottled water because end times were near….”
So let me get this straight; you’re quoting a guy named Walsh who talks about ‘end times’ and you think this crazy woman was correct about something or an other?
Let me guess; you’re one of those Faux Snooze viewers who think the rest of the world doesn’t exist outside our boarders and that only US politics has everything to do with global commodities trading…..am I right?

    • Kick Frenzy January 4th, 2015 at 19:02

      She wasn’t right.
She didn’t predict gas would be under $2, she predicted that she would get it under $2 if she were president.

She’s not president and she did nothing to bring down the price of gas.

What she DID do is get it completely wrong.

      • Red Eye Robot January 7th, 2015 at 05:53

Actually she said if she were elected she would expand US oil production and that would reduce the price of oil. Look what happened, oil producers using fracking dramatically increased US oil production. OPEC felt the drop in demand from the US and a price war ensued now oil is half of what it cost 6 years ago. something all the smart people said COULD NEVER HAPPEN

        • Kick Frenzy January 7th, 2015 at 17:33

The point is that she was saying it wouldn’t happen under President Obama, in fact he would make things worse.
She went on to say it would be her actions that would result in gas prices coming down.

First of all, a president doesn’t affect gas prices like that.
Second, it happened under Obama.. not her. That’s a key point to her original statement… that she was the one needed in order to see gas prices go down and we were doomed if we stayed under Obama.

But if fracking has a lot to so with it, I don’t think it’s a great trade off.
Cheaper gas is great, but being able to set your tap water on fire is not.

Anyway… she may have been right about part of how lower prices would be created, but she was entirely wrong about any of us neding her insanity in the White house to get it done.

    • Mainah January 4th, 2015 at 19:12

Did you even read the article you used? It says nothing about “end times”. It merely stated what we all know, that it’s supply and demand and basic economics. That prices actually went up during all this fracking. You should probably try reading it.

      • Red Eye Robot January 7th, 2015 at 05:40

Actual quote from the article ” If you see sub-$2-a-gallon gas again, I strongly suggest that you stock up on bottled water and canned tuna, because the economic end times may be at hand.” Also oil dropped below $50 today the oil industry is still fracking

        • Mainah January 7th, 2015 at 07:57

“Economic end times” dear. He said that Bachman’s claim that if she were president she could get the gas prices to below two dollars. Try to stay consistent with your argument. He also mentions fracking and the Saudi’s oil dump. Again … you should read the entire article.
As far as economic impact, you do realize we are a global economy. So, when the people with the most amount of oil flood the market to drop the price, in order to make other production of oil less profitable, there will be economic impact. Russia, is feeling that impact since it’s major export is oil. the Saudi’s will never run out of sweet crude. We, on the other hand, have to pump toxic water into shale to retrieve it. Again, supply and demand and basic level of economics, is required. Oh, and seismic activity, a side effect of fracking, so if Okie’s don’t mind the ground shaking … more power to em. I live no where near them.

Gas is under $2 per gallon on President Obama’s watch.

It highly entertaining to watch you right wingers resort to quoting magazine editors and other nonsensical spin in a desperate attempt to distract attention away from the very real fact that despite your irrational hatred of the President of the United States, America is much better off in 2015 than it was in January 2009.

Seems to me the only people who were MASSIVELY WRONG were the people who voted for Mitt Romney.

      Here we go..
“if the cost of oil drops below a certain price, the US oil industry is going to shut down and cease to exist? (thats the ravings of a lunatic). as if global demand for oil is going to go away, or the US based oil industry has ever “shut down”.*(it didn’t shut down in the 80’s or any other decade)
There in no “Saudi dump of oil on the market”, the lower cost per barrel effects their profits like everyone else, there is no reason for them harm their own interest.

Lets go back to the final months of the Bush presidency, when Gas had dropped to 1.74 a gallon here in KC, (due to the global recession brought on my the financial collapse of the US economy) from a record high of over 4.10+ a gallon while he was president..

It had nothing to do with production or any imaginary “dumps of supply” on the markets.

Where’s all the trucker outrage at the Obama admin cutting GWB’s 2008 record $147/Brl oil & $5/gal gasoline by more than half? Your sources are fools at best.

Sure beats the damage an oil spill creates.
And guess what, we aren’t ever going to run out of wind, and the price of the energy doesn’t fluctuate with events in the Middle East, and we cant be held hostage with wind embargo’s by cartels.

I have to share these comments and the story of Bachmann seemed liked the perfect venue. I was reading comments to a story in Jax News 4 (Jacksonville, Florida) about Yoho working to unseat bonner and here are some of the replies…….

As for Ted Yoho, he came to my home and talked with me for quite a while. I got the impression he truly wants to do what’s right for our country. A really nice, down-to-earth guy.

We have met Ted and talked with him as well. He is truly a man who cares about his constituents and his country. It is a shame there aren’t more people like him in Congress.

How senseless can these people be? How can they breath and walk at the same time? I force myself to read these comments to remind myself how badly education is needed in Florida and how deprived they are because they have been raised with generations of fear and ignorance.
