Four Things Conservatives Warned Would Happen With Obama Reelection Didn’t Happen

Judd Legum at Think Progress punctures the dire warnings Republicans claimed would lead us to ruin of President Obama got a second term.

1. Gas was supposed to cost $5.45 per gallon.

In March 2012, on the floor of the United States Senate, Mike Lee (R-UT) predicted that if Obama was reelected gas would cost $5.45 per gallon by the start 2015. Lee said that gas prices would rise 5 cents for every month Obama was in office, ultimately reaching $6.60 per gallon.

Newt Gingrich said if he were elected president, he’d reverse Obama’s energy policies and bring gas down to $2.50 a gallon. The nationwide average is now $2.24.

2. Unemployment was supposed to be stuck at over 8%

In September 2012, Mitt Romney predicted that if Obama is reelected “you’re going to see chronic high unemployment continue four years or longer.” At the time, the unemployment rate was 8.1% and had been between 8.1% and 8.3% for the entire year…

Romney pledged that, if elected, he could bring the unemployment rate down to 6% by January 2017.

The unemployment rate currently stands at 5.8% and has been under 6% since September 2014.

3. The stock market was supposed to crash

Immediately after Obama won reelection in November 2012, many commenters predicted that the stock market was toast.

4. The entire U.S. economy was supposed to collapse.

Rush Limbaugh predicted that “the country’s economy is going to collapse if Obama is re-elected.” Limbaugh was confident in his prediction: “There’s no if about this. And it’s gonna be ugly. It’s gonna be gut wrenching, but it will happen.”…

The U.S. economy grew at a robust 5% in the 3rd quarter of 2014, following 4.6% growth in the second quarter.

You should think about running for president! According to Republicans, all you have to do is predict things.

If Fox Not News predicted the sun would come up, I’d fly to London and place a bet against it. (You can bet on anything in the UK.)

These idiots live on fear, they obviously have no oxygen going to their brain.

They have nothing to offer, so they try and raise fear by saying the other guy will destroy everything.
Thats what happened in 2004 when the Bush admin put out high terrorist alerts, to scare anyone from voting for the “soft” dems.

The two main causes of lower prices both have to do with supply. The exploration “libs” objected to was in the ANWR and other sensitive areas. You cons want to drill everywhere, all the time, and damn the consequences. The increased exploration came from fracking, which made the US the major oil producer. Fracking creates its own problems. The other cause is that the OPEC members did not cut back on production to restore the price of crude.
As for the stock market, I was able to get in on the fun with my 401(k) and IRA. If you didn’t do the same, you only have yourself to blame.
A lot of the people who left the workforce permanently are retired. The boomers are getting to that age by the millions every year. so it will continue to happen for years to come.

“And why is gas so cheap?”
Supply and demand Son…in fact WORLD supply & demand.
It has nothing to do with American politics, even though conservatives like to arrogantly think that the US is the center of the universe.

    • Larry Schmitt January 4th, 2015 at 11:07

You must be wrong, of course we are the center of the universe. After all, we’re called US.

    • lewis January 5th, 2015 at 18:32

      Exactly on both counts

    Statistics lies and damn lies.
According to Senator Lee, given my growth spurt between ages 7 and 18, I should be about 20ft tall by now
Last summers tomato plants (presently buried under the snow), should be yielding about 600 pounds a week per plant
But best of all, my earnings from summer jobs through school, and for a few years after university, should mean a million a year in salary by now.
Is the Senator stupid, or just disingenuous?
