Progressive Groups Opposing Michigan Governor Drug Testing Welfare Recipients

Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan believes that adult welfare recipients should be drug tested before receiving welfare benefits.   Studies have shown that these tests draw positive results in a far less percentage than the general population.   The GOP run state that has recently cut off water to poverty-stricken residents will demand a test for the poorest of the poor, but not for the officials who run the state.   The tests are costly and if history is any judge, the tests will save less money than they cost.

The ACLU and Democratic opponents feel this is unfair discrimination of the poor.

“Other groups, like the American Civil Liberties Union argue that drug testing welfare recipients discriminates against poor people who don’t use drugs at a higher rate than the general population.
We give out tax credits to schools, we give out tax credits to students, we give out tax credits to police and fire (departments),” Sen. Vincent Gregory, D-Southfield, said earlier this year on the Senate floor, AP reported. “And yet the only (group) that we are now saying is subject to drug screening are the poor — the poorest of the poor.”

Looks like another cruel and wasteful Republican Governor wants to continue to give tax breaks to the very rich while creating ghetto-like conditions for the majority of the working poor.  Michigan has rebounded somewhat from the Auto Bailout, but it can’t survive EIGHT long years of a Governor Snyder without substantial suffering by most Michiganders.

Michigan has roughly 80,000 welfare recipients, 21,000 of them adults age 18 and older who could be subject to drug testing depending on which counties were selected for the pilot.

The program will be tested in three counties, then if it proves successful, the entire state’s adult welfare recipients would be tested.  This will certainly cost the state far more than it would recover because welfare recipients use drugs at statistically lower rates than the general population.  Michigan is just another example of poor-shaming and discrimination at the hands of a radical Tea Party Governor.

Rick Scott tried this in Florida, and his wife was the owner of the company administering the tests (signed over to her when he took office), but the process was struck down by the courts. Even before it was made into law in Florida, statistics demonstrated that only a small percentage of recipients would test positive.
Just another reich wing attempt to screw the neediest, and put extra $$$ into some private corporation with ties to the adminstration.
