Pope Preparing Encyclical On Climate Change

John at Crooks and Liars picks up the story from the Guardian.

In 2015, the pope will issue a lengthy message on the subject to the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, give an address to the UN general assembly and call a summit of the world’s main religions.

The reason for such frenetic activity, says Bishop Marcelo Sorondo, chancellor of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences, is the pope’s wish to directly influence next year’s crucial UN climate meeting in Paris, when countries will try to conclude 20 years of fraught negotiations with a universal commitment to reduce emissions…

According to Vatican insiders, Francis will meet other faith leaders and lobby politicians at the general assembly in New York in September, when countries will sign up to new anti-poverty and environmental goals.

In recent months, the pope has argued for a radical new financial and economic system to avoid human inequality and ecological devastation.

I can’t wait to watch how Fox and the Christian wingnuts tie themselves into knots over this.

Oh yeah ..the indignation will be (as usual), entertaining.

Forget tying themselves into knots–you might see heads explode.

Do we have time to amend the Constitution?

    Pope Francis/Elizabeth Warren 2016 anyone?

If such a ticket were possible,I think the Catholic vote is a lock.

Don’t be so sure. A lot of conservative Catholics hate Pope Francis, though they won’t say so out loud. In the privacy of the ballot box, however…

Democrats have usually received the majority of the Catholic vote anyway, since JFK. I think the only exception was 1984.
