No State Has Fewer Jews Than South Dakota

Make that number 390. In New York, that would be maybe one building.

It’s a small, but tightknit flock that makes do without a permanent rabbi and worries too few children are coming along to sustain it.

Steve Benn is a doctor who serves as lay leader at Rapid City’s Synagogue of the Hills. He says “nobody wants to be the last one to turn the lights out.”

The population of the state, as of 2013, is 844,877. That makes them roughly 4.61% of the state total. That compares to 8.9% American Indian, 3.4% Hispanic, 1.2% Asian, 1.9% Black. So, kind of in line when compared to other groups.

I would check your math on that. Isn’t 390 total out of a population of 845,000 more roughly .046%?

Yes, the number you get when you divide 390 by 844,877 is 4.6, and that converts to .046%. But how is this news anyway? Would you expect a lot of Jews to live in South (or North) Dakota? Can’t even get a good bagel with schmear.

Yeah, you’re right! That’s what I get for quickly doing math after a few glasses of wine!

Well, I approve if wine is involved. (Dumping my coffee and replacing with wine, since it’s afternoon somewhere in the world.) :-)

    Antisemitism is absolutely beyond me.

I live on the West Coast and I don’t know that many Jews. But, I meet Jews now-and-again and they seem just like regular people.

    So, what’s the deal?

    • rg9rts December 29th, 2014 at 02:40

      Such a deal!!!

I grew up in a mostly Jewish area and when I first made friends with non Jews I felt the same way about them. Go figure

Jews are rather quiet, law abiding citizens. I think they’re not too popular because they prefer to mind their own business instead of committing crimes in order to attract attention to themselves. They could be a shining example to the Pat Robertsons and Billy Grahams of the world.
