Closed Circuit Camera Shows Teen Raising Gun To St. Louis Cop

Posted by | December 24, 2014 11:22 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Top Stories

The shooting by a cop of black teen is very different than the Michael Brown case.

The victim, named by his mother as Antonio Martin, 18, was killed at a Mobil gas station on North Hanley Road in Berkeley at about 11.15pm on Tuesday.

Toni Martin, who has disputed the police account of the killing, was heard crying ‘that’s my baby,’ as she pointed towards his body under a yellow sheet, while hundreds of people descended on the area, detonating explosives and throwing bricks at officers in protest of police brutality.

But speaking about the death on Wednesday morning, Berkeley Mayor Theodore Hoskins said that the incident should not draw comparisons with the death of Michael Brown, who was unarmed and whose death was not caught on camera. Mayor Hoskins, who himself is black, added that Berkeley has a predominantly black police force so his officers are more sensitive to race relations.

He said that after hearing that a black teenager had been shot by a white officer last night, his first reaction was that it was another case of police brutality. But after finding out what happened, ‘I can assure you that did not happen last night’, he said…

Martin pulled out a weapon and pointed it at the officer, who moved back, dropped his flashlight and fired three shots as he fell backwards, he said.

One of the bullets hit the teenager, another hit a tire and authorities do not yet know where the third ended up. The teenager, who did not fire his weapon, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS officers.

At the press conference, [Police Chief Jon] Belmar offered his condolences to the family of Martin, but added that the teenager could have put down his weapon at any time but ‘bad choices were made’ by him instead.

‘It didn’t have to end with him approaching the officer with his arm extended with a 9mm pistol in his hand,’ Belmar said.

I would like to see that picture enhanced, really can’t tell much and the gun(?) is pointing up, not at the officer. Why would someone point a gun up in the air like that? Could it be that is what he thought the officer wanted him to do? Seems kinda strange.

      I don’t see a gun.

Weapon turned out to have had serial numbers filed off. Illegally obtained weapon.

The mayor disagrees, he says it is a justified shooting

There are enough instances of abuse and illegitimate shootings,
but make sure of facts before you go off, and the violence only hurts your case.

I hope you didn’t mean this for me? “There are enough instances of abuse and illegitimate shootings, but make sure of facts before you go off, and the violence only hurts your case”. And maybe you have a better computer and better equipment then I have All I have is the surveillance vid and my eyes. But without body or dash cam vid I can only go with what I see.

Absolutely not, if it came across that way my sincere apology.
Was speaking of the protest movement in general on this issue.

Jumping to conclusion on anything usually gets you or your cause hurt. It’s the old definition of assume.
You must always look for the truth in anything because those reporting news more times than not have an agenda that uses what facts are supportive and seem to leave the rest on the cutting room floor.

That was my bad. I read it wrong

My bad sentence structure had a bit to do with it I suspect.

Yeah right, a streetwise kid knew all about what the cop would’ve wanted him to do and that would have been to drop the weapon and raise your hands.

It’s reported that the “Officer had body cam but it was not active” maybe they need an activation switch connected to their holster where by they can’t access their gun unless the camera is attached to their vest and is functioning….not—–/s

    • mea_mark December 24th, 2014 at 12:09

Or maybe it turns on when the patrol car door is opened.

      • edmeyer_able December 24th, 2014 at 12:18

I saw a report that there were other cameras in the store that might be able to show a different view of the incident, hope that is true.

        • William December 25th, 2014 at 07:01

Yes and hopefully the shooting team will do this one right. I’m still shocked that any department anywhere would actually investigate their own deadly force events. Where I live the attorney general is the ONLY agency that can investigate police shootings.
It does appear that the shoot was justified based on the video.

      • William December 24th, 2014 at 17:24

Dash cams are activated (generally) when you go code (lights and or siren). the body microphone as well. That technology has been around for a long time

The protesters were remarkably restrained, According to my copy of “The Liberal’s manual for phony protest movements” This incident entitles protesters to loot and burn 1 Shakey’s Pizzeria, Beat and rob 9 innocent people and smash 31 car windows. The protesters may also throw rocks at police and call them racist, (optional)

again we would all like to see your proof concerning the political affiliation of the protestors.

Don’t fool yourself, these are not the Tea Party rallies where there was not a single arrest, this would be the opposite of that.

Seriously, you have to be in complete denial if you don’t know these rioters aren’t out on the same left-wing with the Occupy rioters. If you haven’t seen the anti-capitalist signs, you haven’t been paying attention.

A point for posting splendid photographs, however, I am going to deny your guilt by association. What I see is an evolution in American thinking that is searching for more pragmatic and compassionate police and government. Extreme elements will always attempt to hijack or imitate a popular, non-partisan movement that is ascending with new generations of all races. Most people reject extremes, regardless their photogenic attraction.

its not rocket science when people have to mask themselves during protests on what their objective is Although I think your final pic ( bottom ) suggests they are in Europe [ clock tower in background ] who has a bigger immigration problem then we do

Uh huh. Now would these be the very same Occupy folks that were in NY or what? Can’t wait to see your proof. I did have fun running your photo through tineye.

Nice find on Michael Lott. Man if he isn’t the stereotypical rich-off-Capitalism left-wing Capitalist hater.

Regarding the Hands Up Rioters, common sense should be more than enough to make it clear they’re lefties, but if you want proof, just look at how FNC was horrified by the burning and the looting and contrast that with the way MSNBC and CNN hyped and glorified the rioters – their hearts were with them as kindred spirits.

            • William December 25th, 2014 at 19:14

Yeah, hey that’s great. Get back to me when you are able to identify the political affiliations of the people in question. Not everyone is as gullible as your ilk.

BTW, I for one have no problem with people being pissed off at capitalism the way it is in the USA today. Send jobs overseas, hoard money in offshore accounts, make crazy investments, destroy the economy, get a bail out from the taxpayer, repeat. The first official act after the midterms?
Adopt a law written by Citicorp lobbyists that put the US taxpayer back on the hook for the next Wall street meltdown.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the officer was off-duty, working a secondary job for a private security company patrolling the Shaw neighborhood, when he chased and fatally shot an 18-year-old male Wednesday night who came at him aggressively in a gangway.

Teen in Shaw shooting died from gunshot to right cheek, medical examiner says

A lot comes to light in the articles linked above. Did you know DOJ “Community Relations Service” has had “resolution mediators working behind the scenes in Ferguson since Aug. 10?” What is that all about?

Here is yet another dead young black man at the hands of a white cop who has yet to be identified except by age, 32, and years of service, 6. At the time this officer was “off-duty,” although he was in uniform and driving a marked police car. So, in essence a vigilante/militiaman/hired gun/Pinkerton-man employed by a private security company. A St. Louis “Oddity.” as the local paper of record put it.

It’s not clear what this 18 year-old and the 2 young men he was with actually did, other than run. There’s no mention of a reported or observed crime, running is not illegal. It should also be noted the young man was wearing a tracking device while on “house arrest” pending a weapons case. Is it possible this encounter was initiated by the same company that monitors the device and then dispatches the posse for any telephonic fugitives? Or could a uniformed “employee” of Hi-Tech Security/GCI Security monitor a specific device? Get an automated notice with a fix on their location if they enter a “community improvement zone?” Brave New World! If you can afford it, you deserve it!

    Pardon my rambling…
