Pennsylvania Black Man Finds ‘Ni**a’ Printed On His Restaurant Receipt

Posted by | December 15, 2014 12:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

A Pennsylvania man was about to eat an order of wings from a Harrisburg bar when he decided to look at the receipt in his to-go bag Saturday night, only to find that instead of his name printed, the word “Ni**a” was displayed.

Marquis Moore, 29, said the receipt came from Zembie’s Sports Tavern.

The Patriot News reports, “On a section of his electronic receipt that labels the check name, in print, the bartender, Megan Bonsall, identified the Harrisburg resident with a racial slur.”

Moore said that is his last visit to Zembie’s.

“It makes me feel like I’m just low,” Moore said. “A [expletive] is an ignorant, disrespectful person. It has nothing to do with your skin color. What would possess you to put something like that on a piece of paper? You don’t even know who I am.”

According to Zembie’s owner Angelo Karagiannis, it’s all just a misunderstanding.

Sure it is. We totally believe him.

Karagiannis told PennLive.com that Bonsall intended no harm.

He said that Moore began talking with other patrons at the bar after he ordered chicken wings.

Karagiannis said that Bonsall asked a friend of Moore’s at the bar what his name is, because she didn’t want to interrupt him while he was in the middle of a conversation.

The friend pulled up Moore’s Facebook page on his phone, and he showed it to her in an attempt to identify him, Karagiannis said.

On Moore’s Facebook page, he reportedly calls himself a “sexy [expletive],” he said. And thinking it was funny, she identified him as such on the ticket, he said.

“Megan has worked for me for 12 to 13 years. There was no malice intended at all,” Karagiannis said.

“We have a Redskins fan club and every week there are 12-15 black guys who come in to watch the games. We are not racist at all and serve anyone,” he said, out loud as if that determines whether he’s a racist or not.

Moore isn’t buying the tavern owner’s version of events.

Moore said he called himself a “sexy [expletive]” in a comment feed on his Facebook page.

He said if Bonsall saw that, she must have found it while she searched his Facebook account to try to come up with an excuse for her actions.

“Even if that is the case, why didn’t she put ‘sexy [expletive]’ on the check?” Moore asked.

“I’m hurt by the situation, I am just a random Joe and she could have just taken the time to ask my name,” Moore said. “Racism is no longer behind closed doors.”

Also, if the bartender or the friend didn’t know Mr. Moore’s name, then how did they pull up his Facebook page?

I’m not sure what to think here. On his Facebook page, the guy evidently proudly calls himself the same word that is on the receipt. It was of course stupid for the waitress to use that word on the receipt, but I’m not sure that it was motivated by racism.

If you read above, she said she asked a friend of his, who showed her his facebook page where he called himself a sexy bleep. She was asking a friend of his, because he was talking and she didn’t want to interupt him.

        • tracey marie December 15th, 2014 at 14:18

why did she not use the entire moniker, could it be she is a racist?

          • Bianca Bradley December 15th, 2014 at 15:15

Or maybe she didn’t find him sexy.

Don’t you have a cross burning to attend to?

            • jasperjava December 15th, 2014 at 19:36

So it’s okay to call a paying customer the “N” word, then?

Your desire to defend racism is almost as disgusting as the racism itself.

My ten year old could do better than that. C’mon now.

        • jasperjava December 15th, 2014 at 14:32

If she saw the Facebook page, she could simply have scrolled up to his real name, rather than use what is clearly a racial slur.

I’m sick and tired of conservatives defending and perpetuating racism. There’s a conversation on another thread about Australians stepping up to defend Muslims from bigotry with #illridewithyou. The thing that prevents America from being a truly great country is that there are too many conservative racist and theocratic bigots who vote Republican despite the that it goes against their economic interests, just because they hope the Republicans will perpetuate “Christian” white supremacy and privilege.

i think the facebook search was made after finding out his name from the complant. how else would she have known to look up his name? it makes no sense what-so-ever.

          • Bianca Bradley December 15th, 2014 at 15:14

How does one scroll up to see his real name, when someone elses is holding a phone, showing her a picture? DO you go excuse me, I’m going to take your property to see wha his real name is.

Better to do THAT than use the “N” word, dontcha think??? (or dontcha… Obviously you don’t.)

A slight inconvenience in order to treat a patron with the appropriate respect would not be out of line.

But of course, it never even crossed your mind that a Black person should be treated with respect. It’s a concept that’s completely beyond your understanding.

Do you even know how FB works? If she was looking at a post anywhere on his page … ALL posts have the FB account holder’s name, next to their current avatar and then the post. The man clearly states that he says he posted he was a sexy N-word on his FB page. Posting and Profile are two very different things. One does not need to scroll anywhere to see the name of the person. Hello?

That makes sense to no one ever. Why do some Conservatives insist on defending this sort of racist behavior? What’s wrong with you?

He said he was a sexy one and I noticed that wasn’t what she put. If she saw it on his FB page, then she would have also noticed his name. It does not state that his FB page name was Sexy N-word. He said he called himself one on his page. Huge distinction there. Especially, when she could have very easily said “Hey Sexy, what’s your name?” or even “Sir, I didn’t get your name.” Wicked easy.

It was malicious. No one calls someone they don’t know by that word. She didn’t bother to use the “sexy” part either, which goes to her intent. If she thought it would be funny, so sorry for her and her boss, as I see business dropping dramatically after this. Those 12-15 black guys that come in to watch the games every week will likely find another place to frequent. I know I would. This was shameful and inexcusably racist.
