Senate Passes Spending Bill In Spite Of Ted Cruz

Posted by | December 14, 2014 07:30 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

The $1.1 trillion spending bill that now goes to President Obama for signing will fund the government through next September.

The Senate voted 56-40 for the long-term funding bill, the main item left on Congress’ year-end agenda. The measure provides money for nearly the entire government through the end of the current budget year Sept. 30. The sole exception is the Department of Homeland Security, which is funded only until Feb. 27…

Several Republicans blamed tea party-backed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for giving the outgoing majority party an opportunity to seek approval for presidential appointees, including some that are long-stalled.

“I’ve seen this movie before, and I wouldn’t pay money to see it again,” said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., recalling Cruz’ leading role a year ago in events precipitating a 16-day partial government shutdown that briefly sent GOP poll ratings plummeting…

Despite the opposition from liberals, the package won a personal endorsement from Obama and was brought before the Senate. The legislation locks in spending levels negotiated in recent years between Republicans and Democrats, and includes a number of provisions that reflect the priorities of one party or the other, from the environment to abortion to the legalization of marijuana in the District of Columbia.

Despite protests from the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, more than 70 House Democrats supported the measure, and Obama made clear that he didn’t view the provision as a deal-killer.  Obama acknowledged that the measure has “a bunch of provisions in this bill that I really do not like,” and said the bill flows from “the divided government that the American people voted for.”

Obama has sided with old-school pragmatists in his party like Reid, but split from liberals such as Pelosi and Warren. Warren blasted the measure in a Senate speech for the third straight day, saying it was a payoff to Citigroup, whose lobbyists helped write a provision that significantly weakens new regulations on derivatives trading by Wall Street banks.

And once again the president reached across that gd aisle! I guess he’s lining up his speaking engagements after he leaves office. I certainly hope that Senator Warren has awakened the Democrats who’ve been sleeping way too long.

He’s weak. I’m an Obama supporter, but he sold out on this.

Some one, please tell me I’m wrong.

Sorry but I can’t tell you that you’re wrong. Talk about a big disappointment!!

      • OldLefty December 14th, 2014 at 08:56

Why didn’t Warren or Saunders filibuster it?

        • neworleans878 December 14th, 2014 at 09:00

Can’t answer that. Wish they had.

This will bite us in the ass…

          Not Elizabeth or Bernie however…

My point is that I think things are more difficult than the ideology would dictate.

When you look back at LBJ and see that he not only had a 60-68% majority, but that majority was more liberal, as was the minority.
13% of House Republicans and 31% of Senate Republicans voted for it.

I think it’s the battle/war thing. As awful as this is, I’m afraid much worse is just around the corner.

            I agree.
Especially when those (on our side) who often whine the most, don’t put their money where their mouths are and give us a decent Congress.

Don’t usually agree with either one of them, but on this one they were dead right. This will lead to a “bail in” where depositors are last in line for their own money when the “too big to fail” do.

I jumped out of the market when the Dow was at 16000 and into a “guaranteed” 3%.I hope you’re protected should the market fail as it did in 08.

    • Tim Coolio December 14th, 2014 at 09:10

Dont forget, last time we had a Repub in the oval office the Dow was almost 12.000 lower and we were losing 750k jobs per month!

I certainly hope that Senator Warren has awakened the Democrats who’ve been sleeping way too long. Something that continues to miss me is why the Dems in the senate voted once again to have Sleepy Time Reid as their leader, maybe someone can explain it to me.

I’m disappointed with the Citygroup legislation passing, but understand that one has to choose their battles carefully. Let’s hope Democrats come out to vote next election and we can strengthen Dodd-Frank to the point of where it’s equivalent to Galls-Steagall which never should have been taken away. At least the President get’s some appointments approved, ACA gets funded and Taliban Cruz didn’t shut the government down costing taxpayers billions.

I keep hearing that both sides got a few things from this bill. What did the democrats get from this monstrosity? Did the republicans promise to give the okay on a few appointments if this bill passed? That is all I can see, anyone have any other input?

    • Carla Akins December 14th, 2014 at 09:28

I believe what the Dems got was the – live to fight another day thing. It was sad, embarrassing and hugely disappointing.

      • Suzanne McFly December 14th, 2014 at 09:53

Fight another day? With who? We are going to be severely over run with nuts in the next congress so this was the fight to be fought. They threw their hands up on this one and it makes Warren look like she is the leader for the liberal members of the party. She has increased her following immensely due to her stance. That is the only good news I see, I just hope this congress wont screw up so bad the next presidency will be wasted on fixing the damage they caused. That is what Obama has been mainly doing, fixing w’s major “f” ups and not implementing the liberal policies we hoped for.

      Nope

      • Suzanne McFly December 14th, 2014 at 11:00

That sickens me but I know it happens. It seems like there is nothing we can do to change that. We can vote new people in everyday of the week but eventually they will be bought. Everyone has a price and it seems the cheapest people are the ones who run for office.

        • allison1050 December 14th, 2014 at 17:29

Big corporations got what they wanted in reducing regulation of risky business practices.

Big government right wing hypocrites got what they wanted in vetoing the will of the people of Washington DC on marijuana legalization.

As pi$$ed off as I am about yesterday’s bill, that is small potatoes compared to my disgust with Democratic voters who stayed home last month.

I suppose there are things that an elected official such as the mayor of Washington DC should not say. But if I were in Mayor Gray’s posiiton, I would tell Capitol Hill, that you are in MY city. The people of Washington DC voted to legalize some uses of marijuana. We are going to implement that policy, using whatever funds we can. If you do not like it, then take us to court. In the meantime, kiss my a$$,.

I am certain that if he did, he would be reelected with a near unanimous vote. Having grown up in DC, I know that nothing makes the residents angrier than a bunch of wealthy white out of towners, telling them what to do.
