NY Cop Cleared In Choking Death Of Eric Garner

Posted by | December 3, 2014 14:57 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

A grand jury voted “no bill” and cleared Officer Daniel Pantaleo of all charges in the death of Eric Garner.

The blockbuster decision capped weeks of investigation by the special grand jury, which was empaneled in September specifically to review evidence in Garner’s racially charged death.

It was unclear exactly what charges prosecutors asked the grand jury to consider filing, or how the vote went.

Under New York law, an indictment must be agreed upon by at least 12 members of a grand jury, which can have up to 23 members.

Cellphone video of Garner’s July 17 arrest shows Pantaleo wrestling him to the sidewalk on Bay Street, with the white cop’s arms wrapped around the neck of the black suspect.

Did I miss somebody changing the constitution so law officers can just kill minorities without a trial?

This is what happens when an uniformed citizenry is subject to the constant barrage of news media fear mongering.

      • Red December 3rd, 2014 at 18:04

or maybe the prevalence of camera’s and technology has exposed what we knew was happening all along…which the media sensationalizes for page clicks and views…

yea that’s the problem too much information……….WTF

To the extent that the various media have always relied on fear with the maxim “If it bleeds, it leads”, that’s true. Now, they’ve added the very special feature of compounding the lack of context with spokesheads who natter on about their personal opinions with a headline or two as the riffing off point 24 hours of everyday.

The major question being asked is why the other cops were granted immunity before testifying …This is also reflective of the conservative nature of Staten Islanders…

As someone just said on The Ed Show, why bother wasting millions on body cameras, they won’t mean a damn thing to a jury.

I am watching the same show. I have plans for going to NYC this weekend for shopping, not sure if shopping will be going on now. I am sure the city will be full of protestors and I will not have a problem protesting this BS.

Take care and take a camera. The open thread would be a good place to share pictures.

Liberalism claims another victim. It’s insatiable desire to provide everything to everyone raised the price of cigarettes to the point that a citizen was selling untaxed cigarettes one by one, which thus placed him in a position where he could get arrested. An arrest attempt was made and he died as a result of a stupid, petty law which was placed on the books in to increase revenue. Unbelievable!

    • edmeyer_able December 3rd, 2014 at 18:15

Always looking for a spin aren’t we……………..a liberal tax is the problem not an over zealous racist pig.

    • Kick Frenzy December 3rd, 2014 at 18:41

Cigarette tax isn’t a partisan issue.
Nor is selling loose cigarettes deserving of death.
Also, a non-confrontational position and demeanor along with hands in the air isn’t supposed to be code for “please kill me”.

All they had to do was talk instead of pile on him like it was a modern day lynching.
All they had to do was stop choking him sometime within the 11 times he said he couldn’t breathe.

This isn’t an issue due to a cigarette tax, you “Wayout” whackjob.
This is an issue of police killing black people when they have multiple non-lethal options available to them.
This is also an issue of police getting away with murder, literally.

When, in Ferguson, a prosecutor defends the white cop he’s prosecuting and vilifies the witness testimonies that show that cop in a bad light and leads the indicting jury to decide whether the cop is guilty instead of whether he should be tried in court, that’s a problem.
When, in NYC, a grand jury says a cop shouldn’t be tried when he is on video violating police procedure (choke hold is against the NYC police code), when he is seen to continue the choke hold when the victim exclaims he can’t breathe, when his code violating actions result in death, when two different coroners agree that it was homicide… that’s a problem.

Take off your partisan blinders and face reality.
Because it’s broken and people like you are the reason it isn’t getting fixed.

    • Carla Akins December 3rd, 2014 at 18:50

It’s called an equal and appropriate response. Employing an illegal choke hold in an attempt to arrest someone for an infraction, not crime – infraction is not an equal and appropriate response. Then the officers used none of their training to properly interpret the situation, stop the out of control officer or timely get the man medical care. Equal and appropriate.

      Wayout,

This is the wrong time to be a sanctimonious prick. You see, while you’re being a jerk, most of us are mourning for this young man’s loss of life and the way they treated him after death. The way you’re treating him right now.

The police can no longer be allowed to investigate themselves.
The so-called good cops must start turning in the bad cops, just like they say the good people in the community must be willing to step forward,so to must the so-called good cops be willing to step forward. If you are a good cop then you will not have a problem with any of this, this is the same thing a cop said to me,when he stopped and frisk me,that I should not have a problem with him violating my civil rights if I was one of the good guys. Also the police need to be better trained, because every cop that murders a black male and gets away with it says”they feared for their lives” which means the training that they received failed them, kinda like a firefighter saying they were to scared to run into a burning building. The problem is there are to many on the job that should not be on the job,and yet the so-called good cops say nothing. My question is how can you call yourself a good cop when you are willing to turn a blind eye to the problems that you see and say nothing about?

    • Hellion December 18th, 2014 at 19:36

Any cop that crosses the blue line gets forced out. It’s happened to 3 cops in the last few years.
