2014 On Track To Be Warmest Year Since Record-Keeping Began

Posted by | November 28, 2014 23:00 | Filed under: Planet Politics Top Stories

Never mind how cold it is now; 2014 is likely to be the warmest year on record.

Overall, this was the warmest October since record-keeping began in 1880.

And it’s not just October that was remarkably warm. The entire year so far, since January, has also been the warmest on record—a good 1.22 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average. If the trend persists, 2014 will beat out 2010 as the hottest year on record.

above average warm weather for the next 4 months ?
    im all for it !

“above average warm weather for the next 4 months”
      Sounds nice here…(locally)
But on a global scale, it spells disaster.

did you say global disaster ? keep your mask on

I’m old enough to remember when LA and NYC almost look as bad..
We have come a long way here in the USA to reducing visible ‘smog’..
But we also have a long way to go.

I was trying to say your on a stationary bike if you think the atmosphere is going to get any better ( above ) no matter how hard we try or our progress. at this point green energy is for reducing personal cost(s) for utilities and fuel

But you’re forgetting that stupid & superstitious people (like republicans) fear and deny change. They live by faith (not reality) and don’t even understand the difference between climate and weather. As a great wingnut once said….”the tides come in, the tides go out…no miscommunication”…whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean.

“In the 1970s … hundreds of millions are going to starve to death,” and by the 1980s most of the world’s important resources would be depleted. He forecast that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980-1989 and that by 1999, the US population would decline to 22.6 million. The problems in the US would be relatively minor compared to those in the rest of the world. (Ehrlich, Paul R. The Population Bomb. New York, Ballantine Books, 1968.)

“[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots … [By 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers.” Michel Oppenheimer and Robert H. Blah blah blah. Ehrlich has been proven so wrong so many times in his ecological predictions his name is punchline. We were told the world would run out of oil by 1995. The Alaskan pipeline was originally shot down because “environmental experts” said there was only 10 years of oil in Alaska’s north slope and Prudhoe bay. 37 years later it is still pumping over 500,000 barrels of oil a day. NOAA recently was caught changing temp. data and had to change it back. Even the IPCC has had to concede there has been “No statistically significant warming” since 1996. Environmentalism is not the science of climate it is merely a way socialists are using to try to control peoples behavior. The “Science” of climate change is equal parts VooDoo and superstition with a little manipulated statistical data thrown in for fun. Climate change has more in common with Phrenology and Eugenics than science

You’re rant on climate change aside, mathematically he’s correct and will continue to be correct as there are only 30 days left in the calendar year. But I don’t know that it’s much of a prediction but a statement.

Exactly! The Earth and seas continue to warm. “B-This trend (0.12C per decade) is positive”-Phil Jones 2010 doesn’t say what deniers pretend.

“E – How confident are you that warming has taken place and that humans are mainly responsible?
I’m 100% confident that the climate has warmed. As to the second question, I would go along with IPCC Chapter 9 – there’s evidence that most of the warming since the 1950s is due to human activity.”-Phil Jones 2010.

What does your posted ‘opinion’ have to do with this articles record Global Warming facts? E.g. Since 1880, the global temperature averaged across the world’s Land and Ocean surfaces for October 2014 was the highest on record for the month, at 0.74°C (1.33°F) above the 20th century average.

This also marks the third consecutive month and fifth of the past six with a record high global temperature for its respective month (July was fourth highest). http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/ With the exception of 1998, (2014 likely hottest year on record) the 10 warmest years in the 134-year record all have occurred since 2000, with 2010 and 2005 ranking as the warmest years on record. http://www.giss.nasa.gov/research/news/20140121/

This is a “Riddle” for the “Climate-Change-Deniers”, People Who Seem Incapable of Holding Two Thoughts at the Same Time.
They can Perhaps be Excused for Holding the Phenomenon as a Paradox, but One will Need an Appreciation of “Science” to Fathom the “Concept” of the Difference Between “Climate, on One Hand, and “Weather” on the Other.

Even then, we will Still be Left with a Few, “Willful” Ignoramuses, Who have Financial, Invested interests, and Fight to Sustaining the “Confusion”, the Status Quo. ! ?

Glacier National Park will soon have no glaciers.

Clumsily worded news articles are not a convincing rebuttal to melting glaciers in Montana.

      http://www.nrmsc.usgs.gov/repeatphoto/

      Global Climate Change Background

Glacier National Park’s namesake glaciers have receded rapidly since the Park’s establishment in 1910, primarily due to long-term changes in regional and global climate. In the last century, the five warmest years have occurred in the last 8 years – in this order: 2005, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004 (NASA). These changes include warming, particularly of daily minimum temperatures, and persistent droughts. This warming is ongoing and the loss of the Park’s glaciers continues, with the park’s glaciers predicted to disappear by 2030.

      • R.J. Carter November 29th, 2014 at 10:51

Glaciers melt. If they didn’t, we in the midwest would still be living on one.

I am old enough to remember when the denial talking point was that the earth was not warming.

Now, the talking point is that of course ice melts when it gets warm.

Climate change denial like the scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where a knight who has both arms and both legs cut off in a battle, still wants to fight, threatening to bite his opponent.

When we are taking our summer vacations in the Yukon in January, I have no doubt that climate change deniers will have a ready explanation to “prove” that man-made climate change is a myth.

Yes, glaciers do melt, especially when the earth is warmed by human activity. Beijing and Mexico City are exteme examples that humans do impact the environment. In the recent Olympic Games in China, some athletes considered wearing surgical masks due to the horrific air quality.

Climate change denial is like the birth certificate but on a far larger scale with a great deal more impact. I have given up any hope that deniers will accept the findings of over 90% of scientific experts. There will always be some scientist with the relevant credentials who thinks that climate change and human activity are unrelated.

Until their numbers are measured in figures larger than single-digit percentages, their findings belong in the same file with the birth certificate experts.

        • Roctuna November 29th, 2014 at 11:30

Those were continental ice sheets, at temperate latitudes, responding to planetary climatic cycles. The alpine (alpine means at high elevation and cold) glaciers around the world are disappearing because average temps, even at high elevation, are rising and the net snowfall is less than the annual melt-off. Quit trying to slip your bs into these posts.

          • R.J. Carter November 29th, 2014 at 15:40

The answer is in your own post: planetary climatic cycles. Unless there were cro-magnon factories or neanderthal interstates that influenced climate in the past.

            • arc99 November 29th, 2014 at 16:06

Predictions made based on objective scientific research keep coming true. But deniers, then turn around and say essentially “so what”.

This article comes from 1978. The author is now deceased. He told us this would happen in the antarctic. He pointed to man-made warming as the cause. Thirty six years later, this prediction about the likely effects on the antarctic of human-caused warming, is coming true right before our eyes. So who am I going to believe, conservative naysayers or my own lying eyes?

I do not present this link in an attempt to change your mind or the mind of anyone else. Clearly that is futile.

I present this link to illustrate that my opinions are based on the best available SCIENCE, not politics, conjecture or sarcasm.

West Antarctic Ice Sheet and CO2: greenhouse effect: a threat of disaster

            • Roctuna November 29th, 2014 at 20:50

When I was on a cruise of the Deep Sea Drilling Project in 1982 we were searching for data to improve the record of past climatic cycles. The models of the time strongly suggested that we should be entering another glacial cycle after several 10’s of thousands of years in a post-glacial warming. The temp record and myriad other data gathered, and the models developed from that data over the last 30+ years undeniably shows that man-made warming, driven primarily by CO2 in the atmosphere, has completely overwhelmed and reversed the natural (i.e. non-anthropogenic) climatic cycles of the past 4.5 million years. You really don’t know what the f*ck you’re talking about.

There will always be some scientist with the relevant credentials who thinks that climate change and human activity are unrelated.

Until their numbers are measured in figures larger than single-digit percentages, their findings belong in the same file with the birth certificate experts.

The answer is in your own post: planetary climatic cycles. Unless there were cro-magnon factories or neanderthal interstates that influenced climate in the past.
