Rand Paul: Having It Both Ways

Moments before taking this picture, Rand Paul vowed never to wear a yarmulke. But I’m only guessing.

2016 Schröedinger’s Candidate, Sen. Rand Paul, has taken another one of his principled stands both before and against a pet issue (again), and has voted against a bill that would curb some of the NSA abuses of US Citizens:

Some of its opponents, like Senator Saxby Chambliss, Republican of Georgia, believe it went too far in curbing the N.S.A. Others, like Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, thought it did not go far enough.

So riddle me this, Batman: Does Rand Paul believe that a better anti-NSA bill is going to happen at any time in the near future?

I doubt it. We’re watching yet another attempt by Paul to move to the right where the primary battle will be won. The hardcore Wingnuts have never trusted him, and while he might think it is good to go to The People’s Republic of Berkeley to rally the ideal and naive, the residents of the Confederacy look upon him with suspicion for even trying.

What worries me still is that a lot of us liberals will be fooled by Rand Paul because he talks as seductively as the famous snake with an apple, about things we agree on:

  • Nancy Reagan’s failed Just Say No to Drugs campaign
  • Eisenhower’s military-industrial complex
  • and yeah, the NSA wiretapping

But I digress. We return to the story of the NSA bill he helped to defeat, but it’s cool because he felt bad about it afterwards:

Paul said immediately after the vote that he “felt bad” about his vote against the motion.

“They probably needed my vote,” he said, opposing Leahy’s bill because it would extend the sunset provisions for the laws authorizing surveillance. “It’s hard for me to vote for something I object to so much.”

But as Molly Ivin famously warned us: look at the record, and don’t listen to the rhetoric. Sen. Paul is asking his followers to listen to his rhetoric, and pay no attention to his record.

Didn’t he just vote against the bill to rein in the NSA?

    I think he’s a big phony.

“It’s hard for me to vote for something I object to so much.” = not presidential material.

    ” Schröedinger’s Candidate”

    Classic.

Well, he’s both sides of any given topic, so his reasoned position is just theory until there is an outcome. Open the box.
