Alleged Burglar Mistakes Officer For Getaway Driver

A 33-year-old Washington man was arrested last week while stealing a refrigerator from a vacant home. You see, he mistook an officer’s patrol car for his getaway ride, according to charges filed.

An off-duty Pierce County Sheriff’s Office officer was driving on Nov. 6th when he stopped to talk to a woman he saw leaving the driveway of a home for sale, according to KOMO News.

The woman told the officer that she was visiting someone at a nearby house and needed gas, so she went to the home to ask for fuel.

A likely story. The officer knew the woman from a previous encounter.

The officer wished the woman luck and when he was turning around in the driveway, the garage door suddenly opened and a man later identified as Olias Pettit walked out, according to charging documents.

According to police, Pettit  admitted to breaking into the house and was in the process of stealing a refrigerator when he heard the officer’s patrol car, which he thought was his friend arriving with her vehicle. Whoops.

Pettit reportedly said the friend offered him $100 to break into the home and steal the refrigerator.

He reportedly said he needed the money and had never done anything like this before.

Pettit — this is going to come as a shock — admitted to using meth, which he said he used to give him courage to burglarize the home.

The female the officer stopped was reportedly the friend who paid him to steal the fridge.

Pettit was booked into jail and charged with burglary.
