A Canadian Dissects The real Problem With Americans And Disrespect For Obama

Posted by | November 10, 2014 11:06 | Filed under: Opinion Politics Top Stories

This shows how silly we look to other, more mature cultures.

There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied ’round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a Republican or Democrat, but the president of the United States. The oath of office was taken, the wagons were circled around the country’s borders, and it was America versus the rest of the world, with the president of all the people at the helm

Suddenly president Barack Obama, with the potential to become an exceptional president, has become the glaring exception to that unwritten, patriotic rule…

Maligning the image of the leader of the free world is one thing; putting the president’s life in peril is quite another. More than once, men with guns were videotaped at the healthcare rallies where the president spoke. Again, history shows that letting men with guns get within range of a president has not served America well in the past.

And still the “birthers” are out there claiming Barack Obama was not born in the United States, although public documentation proves otherwise…

The man is being challenged unfairly, characterized with vulgarity and treated with the kind of deep disrespect to which no previous president was subjected. It’s like the day after electing the first black man to be president, thereby electrifying the world with hope and joy, Americans sobered up and decided the bad old days were better.
President Obama may fail but it will not be a Richard Nixon default, fraught with larceny and lies. President Obama, given a fair chance, will surely succeed, but his triumph will never come with a Bill Clinton caveat—“if only he’d got control of that zipper.”
Please. Give the man a fair, fighting chance. This incivility toward the leader who won over Americans and gave hope to billions of people around the world that their lives could be enhanced by his example just has to stop.

Maybe William will explain the disrespect that he directed at a former president for us. Oh, wait…..that was justified and displayed his, William’s, patriotism…..

    • arc99 November 10th, 2014 at 14:13

the author of the piece is a Canadian. while I doubt that his comments about any American President are indicative of his patriotic feelings for his home country of Canada, I am certain of one thing.

Earlier, right wing website Breitbart.com published a breathless article detailing the relationship between the Clinton administration and President Obama’s nominee for Attorney General, Loretta Lynch.

The problem is that none of it is true. The Loretta Lynch who provided legal services for the Clintons is a completely different person.

That significant example of complete journalistic irresponsibility along with your own non sequiteur about the patriotism of a Canadian, confirm my own certainty that whatever a right winger tells us, it is the opposite that is most likely the truth.

Dude, not really sure what you’re talking about……

I was talking about William, you know, the ex-cop who lives in Maine?

        • arc99 November 10th, 2014 at 15:19

The author of the actual article is William Thomas.

If it is our forum colleague William to whom you refer, my apologies.

I presume you have an example of William from LiberalLand demanding to see President Bush’s birth certificate, or making crude jokes about Mrs. Bush or otherwise engaging in the crude behavior that has become commonplace in criticism of President Obama.

Breitbart got an entire article about the nominee for Attorney General dead wrong. That was what I am referring to and please do not call me “dude”.

          • LauraNo November 10th, 2014 at 20:09

And so what if she did defend the Clintons? Someone had to do it. It was someone’s job. Geez Louise.

Well the point is it was a fake story a white women with the same name defended the Clintons. The right wing lies a lot, they knew it was someone else, with the same name. I saw both pictures one of Loretta Lynch a white women in AK who defended the Clintons. Then the picture of the black women Loretta Lynch, our President has nominated for Attorney General, Who has the name Loretta Lynch of the white women. Two different women. Of course the right-wing knew this, they only wanted to put out another one of their false stories, on the republican web page
Breitbart.com to get their base all riled up about Obama. Where they regularly lie about the President with stories the conservatives look for to confuse and make into something else to use on all the conservatives channels to brain wash and keep their constituents misinformed.

        • William November 10th, 2014 at 15:29

Why don’t you address the author of the article. I didn’t write it “Dude”
I do however agree with the author.
I’ll consider your opinion when and if you post some proof that during previous administrations large numbers of people rallied around a drug soaked draft dodger who publicly stated (about the President)
          “I hope he fails”
          ……..Dude.

This is why your side lost so badly in the last election cycle, the American people, myself included, are tired of the false narrative being peddled by your side. The name calling, the personal attacks, the anti-religious bigotry emanating from your side is turning off the voters who would normally vote for your candidate. I for one am sick to my stomach of all the demagoguery, race baiting, and gender baiting. The war on women, the war on minorities, etc.. This country elected Obama, twice, and now seriously regrets it…..his race has nothing to do with the sound thumping his side received. Democrats themselves ran from the failed policies of Obama……did they abandon him because of his color?

That’s so true. I find conservatives attack aggresively about gun control, but the libs attack over nothing.

All you did was say maybe the “author” of this piece might be being hypocritical and you are a ignorant-racist-stupid-inbred-teabagger, wow, I was shocked that you weren’t accused of watching Fox news too.

That’s the attitude that pushed me from any lefty thinking.

    • OldLefty November 10th, 2014 at 14:49

      And back to Clinton??

The difference is that the right institutionalized it and brought it in way beyond the riff raff (which is us).

This is why David Frum said, “Republicans have been Fleeced, Exploited And Lied To’ by a Conservative Entertainment Complex”

      And even And even William Kristol said, on Conservativism becoming a racket;

“Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and
      eventually degenerates into a racket.”

I’ll say again, we have become a very unserious people in very serious times.

The elephant in the room that no one wants to address is Obama is black. America is deeply racist and bigoted. It’s part of our history, our present, and our culture. Sure President’s have been ridiculed, but they were white. Different rules for the “nigger” president. Welcome to post racial America.

    • crc3 November 11th, 2014 at 10:31

It likely will never be addressed and this is why America will never be the country that it was intended to be. Then again when you look closely at American history you realize that most of our forefathers had slaves and still preached “equal opportunity for all”. Two faced hypocrites have always been the way in America and runs strong today. Nobody will convince me that the racism in this country has subsided in spite of all the “advances” in civil rights…

A good article this Canadian has written and so true. It is a shame so many Americans have actually believed all the lies and trash said about him. Then to come to hate this man who only wants to help, us Americans and he wants to be a good President and give all good things to us “the people” Yet they seem to want to believe the worst and they do. The sad thing is none of it is true they have been misled and they don’t even know the man.

Yes, how I long for the days……between the years 2000 and 2009…..where everyone was SO civil to “W.” (Me rolling my eyes in dismissive contempt at the ridiculous premise made by the author.)

Now, that being said, do we need more civility in this country?
Absolutely. But let’s not pretend that incivility JUST HAPPENED with
    this administration.

As for those of you who are throwing out ‘Racism’ charges; other than ‘sorry, the Race Card is just a little played out by now,’ is that the math doesn’t support you. Somehow, all of these ‘racists’ weren’t able to stop him from getting elected, but better than 2/3 of the people polled at election time were dissatisfied with him. Is it really so hard to just accept the guy is ineffective? He’s a laughing stock on the world stage. Most of his own party members up for election did NOT want to be seen with him.

    • Khary A November 12th, 2014 at 14:57

I pose to you a question then, When if ever have racists ever admitted to being so and when have they ever acted overtly to any success? The thing about racism in America is that it is institutionalized and pervasive in myriad ways throughout the culture. So would a racist power base stop his election, No would they make it problematic to the point of discrediting their own leader on “the world stage”, Yes.
