Pope Demotes Communion-Denying Cardinal

Conservative Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Archbishop of St. Louis, has been critical of Pope Francis’s leadership of the church. Burke has been vocal about denying communion to politician who support a woman’s right to choose on abortion.

The pontiff removed Cardinal Raymond Burke as the leader of the Vatican’s highest court and appointed him to a ceremonial position as chaplain of the Knights of Malta, a charity group, according to a press bulletin issued Saturday.

That is a significant demotion, according to the National Catholic Reporter. “The position of Patron of the the Order of Malta is usually given to a retired cardinal, or as a second task to an active cardinal,” Michael Sean Winters writes. “It has almost no responsibilities.”…

The outspoken, conservative bishop — who pushed for the Vatican to revise and water-down its recent, tentative step toward greater acceptance of LGBT people — has butted heads with the pope since the Argentine was elected last year. Last month, he compared Pope Francis’ leadership to “a ship without a rudder” during an interview with a Spanish magazine.

Why not go all out and defrock the bigot. Cardinals live in relative opulence on the dime of religious donors, so they should get in tune with the times or leave the faith altogether. Love and tolerance are not up to subjectivity when they preach the compassion of their belief.

You have to almost commit a crime to get defrocked. I’m happy with this action by the Pope, the Vatican equivalent of being kicked to the curb.

the pope should send ray on a mission to see where officer Wilson is hiding out.

        • jasperjava November 9th, 2014 at 04:43

Yeah, he could use one of those big ceremonial shepherd’s crooks that Bishops have, to pull him out of hiding.

          • fancypants November 9th, 2014 at 12:11

since its been announced his religious efforts are no longer required The tabloids might have a job for ray ?

I know, it was a purely rhetorical question. :)

You dare mention the words “love and tolerance” when it comes to the issue of abortion? The Bishop is correct in denying the Body and Blood of Christ to those Catholics who have aided and abetted in the termination of human life.
As for sexual deviant behavior, the Catholic Church has always taught that we should love the sinner but hate the sin, so Pope Francis is not preaching anything new.

I guess you’re not familiar with the Bishop of Bling then. Catholics in Germany had taken to the streets outside of his residence in protest of how he was squandering their money…He was banished to a monastery last year. Try Google for more info. Others who were accused of child rape have been ordered go the Vatican only to disappear and others will be prosecuted by the police.

The creature was an unbending and unforgiving sob. Which is not what the Church teaches and if you are Catholic then why don’t you know that? What are you 1 of those Baptist, Evangello (deliberate) Taliban American so called Christians?

I’ve been very impressed by the current Pope. This is just another instance that impresses me. The world needs more people like the current pope, and fewer like the demoted cardinal.

    • Nicholas Russell Harris November 9th, 2014 at 01:48

      Amen to that

This is s slap in the face to Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke like you could not believe. It is like being demoted to outhouse attendant at the tractor pulls at the state fair grounds on a hot, stinky Saturday afternoon.

Burke certainly was not a fav when he was here (OFLN/STL MO) either! He’s lucky he only got a mere (yet major) demotion. I am sure the beloved Pope knows exactly what he is doing, and for the better. Very befitting, finally. Very good. R (not T)
