Why The Big Losses? And What Next?

Posted by | November 5, 2014 12:21 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

Democrats took a rigorous hammering yesterday, but there’s more to the losses than Obama’s favorability ratings and the Democrats who stupidly distanced themselves from the guy who cut unemployment in half, got tens of millions of Americans good, affordable insurance, and killed Osama bin Laden. And I’d wager that this huge GOP “victory” won’t last a week into the next Congress.

As for the reasons behind what Jon Stewart compared to the most notorious scene in a very popular cable TV series, pundits on cable news dare not blame the media, but there’s good reason to point to the sensationalist stupidity that passes for news (and that targets the senior demographic), as both Martin Longman and Susie Madrak observe.

There is also the matter of Democratic leadership at the national level. As Alan reported, Ralph Nader had a few things to say about the matter, and it irks me to agree with “the spoiler.” The Doc agrees completely with both Atrios and  even moreso with Howie Klein, who points directly toward the Democrats’ record of retaining consultants whose campaign track record is a joke.

The Doc can tell you from his former career in corporate and political public relations that Democratic consultants have been giving bad advice to candidates since well before Al Gore lost, particularly on the issue of deportment. Swing voters do not respond strongly to gentility, even in the midwest, and are completely turned off by mealy-mouthed political drivel. Tough, strong, and cutting sound bites, on the other hand, do work. Imagine what would happen if, instead of refusing to answer the question about whether or not she had voted for Obama, Alison Lundergan Grimes had forcefully said yes while taking a swipe at the press (“What the heck kind of question is that? What’s next? ‘Is the Pope Catholic?'”) and then, after ticking off a litany of the President’s successes (“adopting Romneycare so we could start Kynect… killing bin Laden… strengthening the economy and doubling the value of your stock portfolio, Senator McConnell…”), stated that “the real question is why you, Senator McConnell, didn’t have the smarts to vote for Barack Obama instead of a guy who makes Gordon Gekko look like Norman Vincent Peale.”

Yes, the whole 2014 mess is infuriating. On the other hand, I’m looking forward to the 2015 mess that will confront Republicans:

This is the same Republican Party that forced a government shutdown because the Tea Party caucus blocked their own debt ceiling bill because it wasn’t extreme enough.

This is the same Republican Party that forced Speaker of the House John Boehner to pull his own immigration bill because the Tea Party caucus decided it wasn’t extreme enough.

This is the same Republican Party that has been threatening to impeach President Obama for years. Heck, they came up with a ridiculous lawsuit against the president that no law firm will take because judges keep laughing it out of court.

The Republican Party is controlled by crazed extremists and they will use their new found power to prove just how crazy they are. They can’t help themselves.

Go read the rest. Then fax a copy to your state’s Democratic Party office and any representatives you may have in DC. If Dems can come up with leadership ballsy enough to exploit the continuing GOP Civil War, turn their latest crop of wingnuts into the Party of [George] Lincoln [Rockwell]’s poster children, and show some spine, 2016 will be well worth the wait.

“If Dems can come up with leadership ballsy enough to exploit the continuing GOP Civil War”. That is the biggest IF, ever! Dems have avoided calling the game against a party that tells lies so often that even Dems accept them as the truth! Dems will never take the fight to the right, for fear of not being liked by the very people who hate them. Look at the early gloating by the right and their smarmy comments. Dems want to reach them? Not…gonna….happen!

The leadership needs to hear from voters like you. They are getting an earful about manning up and showing some spine from me.

Ed Gillespie campaigned for Mark Warner’s senate seat by promising to repeal Obamacare, yet again. They have no new tricks, so they will insist on the old ones that didn’t work the first 52 times.

EDIT: Rep. Gutierrez was right the other day about the frustration of Latino’s. But, he didn’t go far enough by not calling for a new national Progressive Party. Of course, he couldn’t, but he was close to identifying why a Progressive party would sweep the Dems of its progressive members and leave it as the centrist Repub left overs that it truly is.

What are the chances of the Democrats finding their spine and digging in to give the asshats a dose of their own obstructionism? I’m guessing slim to effing none.

    • edmeyer_able November 5th, 2014 at 12:34

There will be enough a$$hats that will sell there vote on key legislation for a piece of pork here and there. Such measures will spell doom for the environment, the middle class and the elderly.

      • Foundryman November 5th, 2014 at 14:01

When that happens, let’s hope we have some democrats with enough guts to go on the sunday shows and any other to tell everyone about it. Or shut down the government ala Cruz or pressure the president to veto….
If they don’t fight back they will just be taking a walk through the park…

The National Review has already published an editorial making it clear that the top priority for the GOP is not to govern, but to position themselves to take the White House in 2016.

They admit voter id is about suppressing votes

They admit that abortion clinic laws are about restricting access and not safety

They admit they have no intention of governing, that it is all just politics.

But people still vote for them.

America, WTF is wrong with you?

The only silver lining here is that turnout as expected was much less than 2012. In Iowa, for example, Ernst won with a total vote count less than Mitt Romney’s Iowa tally when he lost the state to the President.

Ernst came in with about 586,000 votes. Romney lost Iowa with just over 727,000 votes. Turnout is everything. Last night was hardly a mandate. Naturally, right wingers are acting like we had a 100% turnout yesterday.

Yesterday was a low turnout midterm election where every President’s party since FDR has lost Congressional seats. Just as we did with Scott Brown in Massachusetts, it is time to get busy on a national level so that two years from now, the entire GOP slate will suffer the same fate as FORMER Senator Scott Brown.

    • edmeyer_able November 5th, 2014 at 14:33

The sad thing about winning w/o a majority voting is they do just as much damage as if they won with 10X the votes…smdh.

Spot on regarding the dreadful DNC consultants who cannot write an ad, cannot perform well when interviewed on tv, and sure cannot provide proper campaign strategies for candidates across the country.
The example of what Grimes should have said is perfect.
Here in Florida, there was a wealth of facts to hammer Scott back into his crypt, but mostof the ads were vague, generalized, and lacked energy and data that would have actually persuaded people to think…there are a lot of Independents here, and they were all undecided until late in the campaign.
A group of smart high schools students could come up with better campaign ads..

If we are going to start parsing the numbers for political advantage then it is only fair that we also consider the unemployment created as a direct result of the budget cutbacks in government that conservatives demand. I invite you to enlighten yourself with this NY Times article which discusses the damage done to the economy by the very layoffs that conservatives tell us are such a wonderful idea.

As for bin Laden, if the mission ended in catastrophe because the analyst got it wrong and sent our troops into a barracks with 500 armed fighters, where they all died, I sincerely doubt you would be here blaming the analyst.

The President got bin Laden and all the right wing spin in the world will not change that. Using the logic of the President’s critics that he did not get bin Laden, then we might as well say that Lincoln did not free the slaves. All Lincoln did was hold meetings, solicit advice and issue an executive order, same as President Obama with the bin Laden mission.

So ultimately, applying the same standard, Lincoln did not free the slaves. The slaves freed themselves. Removal of his image from Mt. Rushmore will begin momentarily.

Look. I would not give Bush credit either if it was him. The people who I give credit to is the people on the ground. that eat, slept, shit, dreamed every moment of their lives in tracking that piece of shit down.

All of our politicians are for the most part “Fair weathered friends” they come and go with the wind. The people who dedicate their lives to the service of this country is who I believe deserves the credit.

Hopefully that help clears that matter up of who I believe deserves recognition.

So either the President (whomever it is) gets the blame when things go wrong and the credit when things go right, or his staff, the military and civilian civil servants get both the credit and the blame as necessary. Can’t have it both ways.

Targeting the senior demographic is a reasonable assumption. However, the Millennials also abandoned the DNC ship.

according to NBC exit polling, the millenials whom I define as voters born after around 1980, stayed home. call that “abandoning” if you like. but they abandoned the GOP as well and did not vote for anyone.

      http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/where-are-millennials-midterm-voters-skew-old-n241216

In today’s midterms, 37% of voters are over the age of 60 but only 12% of are under 30 years old. This 25 point difference is larger than the 16 to 20 point age gap seen in the last three midterms.

The Democrats should of been working harder on issues important to the next generation, minimum wage, student loans, climate change and job opportunities. Working on these issues and talking about these issues would of made for a narrative where the youth thought the politicians cared about them and were working for them. These issues just got drowned out and the democrats didn’t keep bringing them up and fighting for them enough. Fear seemed to be the narrative, thanks to the republicans, and democrats didn’t bring that narrative back around to the issues that the younger generation cares about.

I think before Jan 3 2015 I’ll arrange for my portfolio to be fully invested in koch industries as I predict it will do quite well in the next 2 years.

So either the President (whomever it is) gets the blame when things go wrong and the credit when things go right, or his staff, the military and civilian civil servants get both the credit and the blame as necessary. Can’t have it both ways.

do you suppose people would have voted GOP had Obamacare delivered the $2500 yearly healthcare savings Obama promised? If the Democrats and the president could point to the Keystone pipeline and the jobs it would be creating by now, would the Democrats be looking at a Republican senate? How well did Harry Reid’s daily speeches in the senate about the Evil Koch brothers pay off? Or for that matter How did the democrat party and the mainstream media calling every American who disagreed with the administration Racist pay off? Did using the IRS as a political weapon deliver a democrat senate?

    • arc99 November 5th, 2014 at 17:38

The $2500 promise was made when the President was still a candidate and the public option was still on the table.

The IRS was not used as a political weapon. The claim that they did is a lie rivaling the birth certificate BS.

Everyone who disagreed with the President was not called a racist.

Unemployment has been reduced by half since the President took office. Right wingers keep insisting that it is irrelevant. Apparently, some people were stupid enough to believe you.

and there is no such thing as the “Democrat party”.

Breaking! Midterm’14 36,6% turnout Lowest since WW-II 1942 when voters were deployed! http://bluenationreview.com/2014-saw-lowest-voter-turnout-since-1940/

    • edmeyer_able November 5th, 2014 at 17:44

Unbelievable when so much is at stake, I’m finding it hard to concern myself w/student debt, unemployment and the environment. It will be the coming generations that end up suffering the consequences.

    • arc99 November 5th, 2014 at 17:47

I have done some digging into the Senate race in Iowa and the governor’s race in Maryland. Turnout was the key as the GOP winners last night won about the same number of votes as Romney did in 2012 when he lost both states decisively.

When people come out to vote, Democrats win.

When people stay home, well you see what happens…
